Honestly, I never liked Quake anywhere near as much as Doom. Quake was the beginning of the how-many-different-fucking-shades-of-gray-can-we-use-in-our-game style of FPS. Doom was colorful. And I liked the enemies in Doom better. They were a little cartoony, I suppose, but at least they looked like stuff. The enemies in Quake were angular and boring.

I agree. Quake may have slightly improved some mechanics, but it was ugly as fuck to look at. Graphics aren't my priority when rating a game, but at least Doom was pleasing to look at. It had some charm and character while Quake just felt bleak and empty.

Yeah, Quake was not without some good points. I thought it was really cool how flies would start to gather around dead bodies. That was completely mindblowing at the time.

I'm pretty sure that was Quake II.
But yeah of course I liked the logical next step, being able to jump and look around was nice. But it had been done already in Duke Nukem 3D, a game with tons more charm and character than Quake I. Hell, you could look around and stuff in Ultima Underworld years before Duke Nukem or Quake.

Agreed on Quake. Fun to play, bleh to look at, but I appreciate how important it is in regards to online play and the modding community as well. Doom had clean visuals, and a vibrant art style, and as my own opinion goes, it is the better game. If I had to toss in my hat for best shooter, it'd probably be Painkiller for brainless, shooty fun, or Half Life 2 for brainy, shooty fun with a great narrative hook.
I'm actually enjoying seeing all the lists and what people are into. I guess if I had to throw in honorable mentions:
Resident Evil 4 (Somehow forgot about it, really belongs in my top 10)
Metroid Prime
Eternal Darkness (just recently got a Gamecube, can you tell?)
Gun Nac
Symphony of the Night
Syberia 1/2
Silent Hill 2/3

Quake I wasn't as bad as Quake II was in terms of art style. Quake I had this gothic style that had never really been done before, and was really atmospheric, coupled with the music. Quake II was more "brown and grey EVERYWHERE" than Quake I ever was. In Quake I, you had castles, graveyards, and labyrinths. Quake II had... warehouses. With crates.

I took some time to revise my list and this time it is definitely in order. It is still subject to change, as new games are constantly coming out, but most of these are in the top 15 because of memories attached to the time during which I was immersed in these games.
1. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
2. Tecmo's Deception
3. Elder Scrolls III : Morrowind
4. Super Metroid
5. Solstice
6. Earthbound
7. Pirates!
8. Return Fire
9. Armored Core
10. Mega Man 9
11. Tenchu Z
12. Chrono Trigger
13. Fallout 3
14. Hard Drivin'
15. Dragon Warrior

Yeah, I will agree that Quake 2 is just dull in every imaginable way. And again, I liked Quake 1, but it just hasn't aged well aesthetically. I think the series kind of started id's descent into trying to create the best possible graphics engines at the expense of art design and originality (As much shit as Romero gets these days, it feels like he and American McGee were the last two guys there with any imagination to speak of).

Quake II was what id makes without Romero's creativity, and Daikatana was what John Romero makes without id keeping him in line. They both suffer without each other.

Sorry to necro this old thread. Just want to see what some of the newer members are into these days.
For me
1. Zelda: Parallel Worlds
2. Zelda :Outlands
3. Destiny of an Emperor
4. Final Fantasy V
5. Super Metroid Redesign
6. Final Fantasy VI
7. Secret of Mana 2
8. Chrono Trigger
9. Crystalis
10. Zelda: Link to the Past
11. Super Metroid
12. Blaster Master
13. Final Fantasy IV
14. Secret of Mana
15. Legend of Zelda
I know I tend to like older games and remakes of older games, but fuck it, I think hacks and remakes still count.

Off of the top of my head, Zelda: Link to the Past, Mega Man X3, and Super Smash Bros. Melee are some of my top choices. Metroid Prime is also very well done.
Borderlands 2 has also been a ludicrously large amount of fun, it's an astoundingly good sequel if you have three regular buds to play it with. I'll try to come up with an actual list later.

I personally approve of that little touch, there.

I like remakes of the original Zelda. I wanted to try Zelda Shin Densetsu or Ganon's Revenge. Anybody else try any of these?
