In an exclusive interview with Digitalspy, Neil Gaiman revealed that a film adaptation of his book American Gods is in the works.

Gaiman revealed to Digitalspy also that a director "who has many, many Oscars" is already on board the project.

"I'm going to be having a meeting in LA with the people that the film rights have been sold to," he confirmed. "I'm going to be... talking to them, find out where they're going and if there's any way that I can help."

Gaiman described the secretive director attached to the film as "a genius".
"He fell in love with this [novel] about six or seven years ago and has not given up," explained the writer.

American Gods takes place in a world in which gods and mythological creatures all exist.
Everybody wants a Sandman series, even Lucifer would be amazing but this is also prett-ay, prett-ay, prett-ay, pretty good!

HOW IN THE HELL DID YOU GET NEIL GAIMAN NEWS BEFORE ME?! SO! NOT! FAIR!

In other news: how exactly do they plan to make this a movie, again? Confused If I was a director, I'd take trying to film the entirety of Sandman before I attempted American Gods. Still, at least it's a guy who seems to love the work; that alone will take it far if it ever gets off the ground. And Mr. G tends to be pretty laid back about adaptations of his work, so at least I don't have to get upset on HIS behalf, just my own, if they screw the pooch on it.

Plus seeing how they try to handle the man-eating vagina scene is going to be really, really funny.

Here's where I found out, complete with a video interview with Gaiman

Thanks, Sathien! You'd think being subscribed to every single Neil Gaiman blog, feed and page on the web would have gotten me this info at some point, but noooo. I'm still utterly shocked that he never mentioned it on Twitter, if nowhere else.

Thanks for picking up his slack, though. Wink

Ooh! This has the potential for epic failure. I really want it to be good but, I mean, its Hollywood, how often do they screw up book to movie translations?

Funny enough, American Gods was one of my least favorite Gaiman works, but I'll still probably see it. I loved that they changed the super anticlimatic ending of Stardust, so maybe a few tweaks'll make me enjoy it more.

Id never read any of his novels until Id finished Sandman, after that friends insisted. I didn't think either novel was as good as sandman, they were still interesting. I just lack faith that they can translate it to a movie format.

Tom Hanks’ Playtone Productions is set to produce an open-ended series, American Gods, for HBO, based on Neil Gaiman’s award-winning novel, while the company’s next project, Major Matt Mason, is in talks with Robert Zemeckis to direct in 3D, Playtone partner Gary Goetzman told The Hollywood Reporter.

The series-in-development, revolving around the question “are you a god if no one believes in you?” is executive produced by Goetzman and Hanks, with Bob Richardson, and Gaiman on board as executive producer and writer.

Now slated for six seasons, each season will be of 10-12, hour-long episodes with a budget of around $35-40 million per season, targeted to debut on the cable powerhouse in 2013 at the earliest.

Rich in religious folklore that spanned millennia and featuring deities from Greek and Nordic mythology, and even the Judeo-Christian monotheistic God making an appearance, in the contemporary U.S., American Gods will be effects-heavy to do justice to the awe-inspiring power of the divine beings. “There are some crazy things in there. We’ll probably be doing more effects in there than it’s been done on a television series,” said Goetzman.

This actually doesn't sound too bad an idea. I want to see... I haven't read the book, so I should do that too.

The book is fantastic, and if I have faith in anyone to do a good adaptation of anything, it's HBO. It's the perfect venue for it. Gaiman co-writing ensures to me that it will be quality. Looks good so far...
