Sure, Syd came up with a treatment for it when he reviewed the game. But Hollywood did not bite. Bad Dudes: The Movie has never been made.
Until now.
Okay, not now, either. BUT! On a complete and utter whim, I'm on a mission. I want to see if I'm a bad enough dude to acquire the movie rights to Bad Dudes.
Sure, I've got no money. Sure, Data East is out of business. But dammit, if Uwe Boll can get the stinkin' rights to Alone in the Dark, I want to see if I can do this. Or at least find out how much it would cost me (or whoever else is stupid/bad enough).
Wikipedia tells me that Data East's intellectual property was sold off to G-Mode when they went bankrupt. Anybody else have any other leads?

I was actually unaware that Data East went bankrupt, but I too, found myself wondering last week how much the rights to Bad Dudes would be. I would imagine they couldn't be that expensive, but who knows? The fact that someone else own's the rights now probably complicates things greatly.
Or maybe it doesn't. A new owner may be more likely to license the rights out to a campy movie than the company that actually made the game.

Yeah, I really haven't the foggiest idea what something like that would cost. But if nothing else, it'll make for an interesting experiment.
Actually, the biggest difficulty I expect to encounter is the language issue. G-mode is a Japanese company. They've got an English version of their website (actually, Engrish is probably more appropriate), but something tells me that, since most companies ignore random emails anyway, they're going to ignore ones in a different language even more.

If they have a mailing address, you could always try that.
And companies will occasionally reply to you. When MK: Deception was only announced for PS2 and XBox, I e-mailed Midway to express my discontent that it wasn't coming to Gamecube. Months later, when Midway announced the GCN version, they actually e-mailed me to let me know about it. I thought that was pretty cool.

Oh, I'll definitely try whatever it takes. I'll phone them if they don't write back. In any event, I've emailed them and we'll see where that goes.

I don't know how DarkMaze's quest goes, but I could talk to some folks I know who have aquired film rights and see what they have to say about the process.
Now, making it will be a different battle entirely, but let's cross that bridge when that comes.

I have a friend who's a film major, a friend who works at a legitimate TV station (a Fox affiliate) as a camera man who has access to equipment, and a friend with an amazing bass voice that's perfect for the movie intro.

If only we could get Dana Carvey to play Vice President Bush. "Get me the bad dudes!"

We'd have to go with Reagan and make it really 80s.
EDIT: Total mind fart, Bush was vice pres then... It just hit me like a ton of bricks. Stupid American education system!

I suppose I'll try emailing G-mode in Japanese next.
Honestly, I don't expect anything to come of this. It's more out of academic curiosity than anything else. Nevertheless, a Bad Dudes movie has the potential to be a cult-tastic '80s nostalgiafest.

The more I think about this movie, the more I want to do it (so get the rights, damnit! lol). Thing is though...there's very little plot involved. The opening and ending would be fantastic, but would we just adlib an entire middle, or just have like a 60 minute action sequence bridging the two actually pieces of story?

Why not just have 60 minutes of Bad Dudes on a train? And I do mean ON a train... ON TOP!!!

I think it's a bit presumptuous to assume that if DarkMaze is somehow able to obtain the rights (and that's a big if since the company that owns the rights is located overseas) that you or I or anyone on the boards would necessarily get the chance to be involved. You forget that we all live in different states such as Illinois, Massachusetts, and Canada.
But lately I've been thinking about how to make it work as movie too. I like my Reagan kidnapping scene because it's cheesy and stupid, but I was thinking the Bad Dudes should be reluctant heroes in the vein of Snake Plissken. I had in mind a scenario where the Bad Dudes are hanging out a D.C. bar frequented by U.S. military personnel, including many of their top special forces. One of the Bad Dudes gets in a fight with a special ops guy over a girl and a fight ensues in which the Bad Dudes beat up everyone in the entire bar. Eventually armed police and/or federal agents show up and the Bad Dudes are taken into custody.
Meanwhile, the U.S. government is faced with a crisis. They can't admit that Reagan has been kidnapped without appearing weak in front of the Soviets and jeopardizing the uneasy peace between the two super powers. Remember, the Cold War was still going strong at this point in history. And if they mobilize any siginificant number of troops, Soviet spies will eventually figure out what's going on. In order to save the president without embarassing the administration, a small elite ops force must be sent in. Unfortunately, the Bad Dudes have beaten the shit out of all their best men. And so, the Bad Dudes are offered a deal: rescue the president or spend the rest of their lives in jail.
After that, it'd just be an action-packed chase through all or most of the game's locations.
Also, there needs to be blatant Coca-Cola product placement. A refreshing can of Coke can heal most serious wounds.

Bad Dudes on a Train. Is that the sequel to Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train?
"My theory is that everyone is a potential ninja."
EDIT: Dang, Syd, you made your relevant post just minutes before I made my stupid one. Anyhoo, I haven't thought as far ahead as actually making the thing. My chances of actually obtaining the rights -- let alone even talking to someone who could sell them to me -- are astronomically low. I'm sure I couldn't even afford them. But I'm looking into it because Bad Dudes has a bizarre, special place in my heart for its utter absurdity and off-beat coolness.
P.S. I dunno if it's because I watched both Escape from [Major American City] movies last week, but I like the Plissken-esque approach to the Dudes.

I forsee another problem. Who on these boards could possibly play Karnov? Even if someone were of Turkish descent, I imagine that no one here weighs more than 160 lbs, let alone have bulging muscles and a handlebar moustache. |
I know a 160 lbs. Turk, but that's lbs of flab and not muscle... we could work with it though.
BTW, WHEN (not if) we make this film, I'm driving anywhere it needs to go. Especially Nevada. And the Ninja Compound Lair.

I was gonna offer to play Karnov, but I'm not fat enough.
By the way, Syd, that premise is excellent.

As long as we have the classic line from VP Bush "Get me the bad dudes", I don't care too much about the setup. A friend of mine has the perfect voice to play Karnov, but he is not turkish, and while he is more than heavy enough, it's not muscle at all. (The moustache would be no problem either, lol)

Anybody here know Japanese? That colleague of mine who was supposed to translate my email... never did.
After emailing G-mode a couple of times in English, to no avail, I figure I'd try at least once in Japanese before phoning overseas.
EDIT: Oh, and there's just no way I'm willing to use Babelfish to translate. I don't trust Systran further than I can throw the internet.
