I should've asked you guys how to fix the virus I got last year Or was it the year before? Anyway, in the end the only way I could get rid of it was to wipe the hard drive and start all over. :\
Here's what it did: it apparently corrupted every single program I had on my computer, from web browser to AIM to freakin Notepad. Whenever I tried to launch something it gave me an error saying the program was corrupted. I couldn't launch any anti-virus programs to get rid of it, I couldn't open a web browser to get a new anti-virus program, and I couldn't even run system restore. Booting up in safe mode made no difference.
What would your guys' suggestions had been if I had asked back then? :3 |
I went into safe mode and used system restore to get rid of it.

Ok new (and horrible!) issue: mid-way through the Malware scan, my computer crashes and restarts itself. It has done this in normal and Safe modes now and the first time i got a blue screen of death error that flashed by before I could read it, second time, in safe mode, it just turned itself off and restarted without giving me anything.
But on the plus side, programs don't ask me what i want to open them with, Vista Security 2011 isn't running and telling me I'm super duper at risk every two seconds and touch mouse scrolling is back on. I'm going to declare a tentative success against the virus, but maybe a long term failure in the war against technology. |
Load into Safe mode, go to command prompt, run chkdsk c: /r
Try malwarebytes again.

Hey, we weirdo fucking techies get our OS's for free. We then determine that you slacker shit end users are fucking bogging down the web with your large animated GIFs and we feel you should be penalized by paying Microsoft and Apple.

My dad used to be the head of tech support of Social Security in the Greater Boston Area. It was pretty awesome, because we'd get every new version of Windows and Office, not to mention WordPerfect and Lotus, back when those were relevant.

What if the upgrade can be obtained for free with the purchase of a computer, as is the case for my copy of Windows 7? (which was a pointless offer, since any OS other than Vista doesn't work right on my computer)

This was on a computer that came into the place I interned.
In the end we had to wipe the hard drive, even after taking it out and running scans on it when hooked up to another computer
It's a tricky little bugger.
EDIT: I should mention the guy I interned for only let us use Malwarebytes, Avast, combofix, PC decrapifier, and hijack this.
...Come to think of it, I'm not sure if we did use anything other than avast and malwarebytes on that computer...

It has become increasingly difficult for me to troubleshoot viruses over the last few years since my reaction is almost always "reformat". I have so much data in the cloud at this point that it takes less time to just reinstall stuff than it does to fix it.
I know this isn't how most people work, so the old fixes still need to exist, but honestly people, consider doing things an easier way... computers don't last forever. Viruses, hardware crashes, and general mistakes happen.

Backup all other media and files to an external drive once in a while
It takes a lot of effort to make it work, but you never have to repeat it once you do it.

Ok, now it's been blue screening and when I ran chkdsk, it told me to run it with fix which I did and then it said it couldn't fix it but would next time it restarted so I restarted and I don't know if it helped?

I'm in the market for an external drive for backup purposes, but I've had hit-and-miss experiences with them. What do you recommend for archival purposes?

Western Digital or Seagate. There are no other brands anymore. If you see another brand, it is owned by WD or Seagate.
How much data do you have that you need to backup?

Ok, now it blue screens pretty much every half hour or so, sometimes with an error that's something like IRLS is less than SQL or something like that? Help?

That is how Windows Vista is meant to work.
Just kidding.
However, I cannot help you with that myself other than telling you to carefully backup your data to some kind of storage medium, format your hard drive, reinstall Windows, carefully restore your data.

BZ, how hard would it be to reinstall the OS?
You might be happier with a more stable system that just takes some time to get going.

Uhm, I'm not sure I have a Windows disk for this thing, I bought it before I moved and haven't seen it's booklet and paperwork since. I can't really afford whatever the fuck Windows Seven goes for, nor an external backup drive or any of that jazz.

On Vista here. I'm having literally the same exact problem you are, IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL shit. I don't think it's a temperature problem, because whenever I run this out of safe mode, I get a message saying a file in the System32 folder related to the Microsoft Task Manager (I sincerely hope) is not running... DLL server issue or what not. I'll get exact details when I try again. Once every umpteenth try, though, I don't get this error and can run out of safe mode perfectly fine (no blue screen) until I shut the laptop down and try to power it again.

Lets make individual threads for unique problems. Tech issues have give and take, with multiple questions in between, things become hard to understand.
Black Zarak, what is the exact error message you get.
