I can see the point they're trying to make, as in it's an unnecessary and painful procedure most of the time, but some people actually have to get circumsized for medical reasons.. I can't remember the name of the disorder, but when the opening is too small to pull back or something... Whatever it is, this will never pass because sometimes circumcision is medically necessary.

So if it passes does this mean all the guys with phimosis have to leave San Francisco to get circumcised?

There is no medical reason to have an infant circumsised. People have tried to come up with bullshit reasons forever, but they don't make any sense. It was just done to the majority of children in the US for aesthetic reasons or the fact that they parents want their kids to be like everyone else.

Banning it alltogether is ridiculous though. People should be able to make that choice in young adulthood, especially if they have a foreskin related problem. The rate of infant circumsision is going down as people get educated, just let it happen naturally.

Ah, I didn't think of that part.

But that brings up a bigger question. Excuse me for asking ignorant questions, but can circumcision be done at any point in time, or is it supposed to be done strictly after birth, or so? And if it is, wouldn't it be up to that person's discretion whether to be circumcised? I understand the religious connotation behind it, but it seems to me that the babies need to grow first and be educated before something like is decided.

It's typically done a day or two after birth. Jewish culture does it when the baby is eight days old, I believe. I suppose you could be circumcised at any time tho.

You can be circumcised at any point, but it apparently hurts like a bitch and takes a while to heal after a few years of age.
