www.amazonwireless.com It's a beta program and they offer heavy discounts on upgrades.
Edit: Also what's the point of having the Thunderbolt when you're not in a 4G area?

theyre banking on the fact that the customer doesnt know that

What the French toast. I've always thought it was called an iTouch.

If anything they should be very vocal in the fact that the area is not yet capable of 4G speeds. A lot of people just assume that they have a 4G phone so they now have 4G speed, in the long run you then have people saying "this is just as fast as my previous phone" and complaining. It's much more cost effective to keep your customers then it is to find and recruit new ones. I was thinking about getting the Thunderbolt myself but when I looked at the coverage map my area isn't covered...yet.

you give too much credit to the consumer.

if they get the phone w/out realizing they are not covered by 4G, they probably wont ever realize it. 3G is quite quick already, so any change in speed is probably imperceptible to those uninformed consumers.

in your case, you already know you are not covered, so you wont get it til you are covered, so this wont affect you & others like you.

4G is virtually just a marketing ploy to stalk stupid people to spend more money. But, if you do go to a 4G area, it's worth it.

All three companies have different kinds of 4G, as well.

AT&T and Verizon's are basically just upgraded speed of 3G while Sprint's is actually like hi-speed wifi. That's why Sprint's 4G coverage is so light in non urban areas.

Hartford has 4G and New Haven area is in testing. I have seen it switch on and off twice now. Both will have solid 4G area wide by the end of 2011. It doesn't make sense to buy a 3G phone now with 4G being rolled out. Yes, it would save money, but in the long run, the experience on the phone will be worse more quickly.

The speed difference ranges from 5x to 10x improvements. If you use a phone for tethering/mobile hotspot, then 4G would make an even bigger difference.

I was looking at Verizons coverage map and it doesn't show any area in CT with 4G. I guess they don't keep up on their coverage details. Makes me wonder if we have it here as well.

We are a 2011 "Expected" market. Like I said, it switches on and off... most likely testing.

I also have a T-Mobile G2 like Excel. It's an amazing phone and the best I've ever owned in my life up to now, especially with the keyboard (as I can't stand "virtual keyboards" by and large.) The "4G" (HSPA) works perfect here, also, since I live here in NYC.

Android rocks.

I own a ten dollar track phone from Wal-mart. I loathe texting and I'm not really a fan of calling people either (though I do keep it around for emergencies & when I need to ask someone if they want to hang out).

I currently have a Samsung flip phone on Verizon, I am a year and a half into my contract which means it was upgrade time.
Went to the Verizon store and was pissed that the smart phones were still too expensive (in my opinion) to go along with a two year contract. Checked the website and my girlfriend has a $100.00 credit because she is past her two years. The site also had better deals. Droid Pro was (is) BOGO at $99.99. Applied the credit and now we're both getting "free" new Droids.
Plus I found out I get 15%/month off my bill because of my job (should have looked into it before, dammit).
