A Song of Ice and Fire being translated into HBO's Game of Thrones series has been an interesting adventure...
I have not read the books, so I definitely feel a little lost in the back story, but am quickly beginning to understand the general plot of this tale.
There are a lot of characters, so I strongly suggest to anyone interested, be sure to watch the first episode or risk feeling completely lost. Additionally, it is difficult to tell who is good and who is bad as the story begins.
Please limit spoilers in this thread to the content of the show, don't post spoilers from the book, instead do that in this thread: http://www.sydlexia.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=11961
[SPOILER:a1f572a4b0]I am still confused about the relationship between Cersei Lannister and Jaime Lannister... are they full blood siblings? If so... WTF?
Also, I get the impression that Dire Wolves are somehow much more than just wolves...[/SPOILER:a1f572a4b0]

I've heard a lot about this show but I missed it when it aired so I'm snagging the first two episodes off a torrent. Really excited to watch it.

Finally watched the first episode. Loved it. :O The whole settling, the visuals, it's really fantastic. I was a little overwhelmed by all the people being mentioned and I had to peek on the wiki page to straighten a few of them out, but overall I found it to be amazing. Great start.
I'm gonna watch the next episode after breakfast.

The first episode certainly made the show feel epic in its scope. I felt like the second episode definitely solidified who the primary characters are as unique individuals. I wouldn't hit up the wiki until after watching the second one.
I really think they should have made the first viewing double length. It would have made it easier on the viewer.

I didn't really read any spoilers or anything; hitting up the Wiki was just to get a few names straight.
[SPOILER:bab7d2a660]NOOO NOT THE DOGGIE dammit. If more dogs die I swear I'll just sit around sobbing at this show all season. Why the doggie whyyy. Also, that Sensa is a bitch for lying to the king and trying to cover up what the prince did. Granted, she was trying to keep her family from being punished too, but you don't get to have it both ways. I mean I can understand her desires for the throne and the prince probably looks like Prince Charming to her, but still. It sucks that her dog had to pay the price... I hope Prince Charming doesn't look so charming to her now.
Also, it took me an embarrassingly long amount of time to realize the woman playing the queen is the same woman who played Gorgo, Leonidas' wife, in 300.
Daenerys seems to have made a quick turn-around. She went from being all weepy and upset about being married off to a barbarian to going out of her way to learn "techniques" to make him happy. I wonder if they'll end up actually in love?[/SPOILER:bab7d2a660]
All in all, I am loving this show so far. Can't wait to see the next episode.

Soooo the next episode airs tonight :O Who's gonna be watching it?
Also GPF, I just read your spoiler from the first post 8DDD
[SPOILER:18bd553036]Yeah, it looks like Cersei and Jamie are full-blooded twins engaged in a full-blooded affair with one another. I wonder how long it's been going on... I get the impression it's a while. What makes me really curious is her kid, Joffrey, is a total blond platinum blond like the rest of the Lannisters. Makes me curious what the chances are his dad might in fact be his uncle.
Also, I adore Tyrion Lannister, so I'm really at odds with believing he's behind the assassination attempt on Bran. Tyrion seems to be one of the more grounded, albeit severely jaded, people present. That said, he did say he'd do anything for his family, so perhaps this was his way of contributing... Still bums me out a bit, because I really adore his character.[/SPOILER:18bd553036]
Very excited for the next episode tonight.

I doubt I'll watch it tonight when it airs but maybe Tuesday or Wednesday night. Not sure if it is a show I'll keep up on yet, but it seems okay so far.

The show is starting to hit a stride. The slower pace in this episode allowed them to really get into the characters.
[SPOILER:744ee7980d]I loved the ending when Catelyn turns the tides on Tyrion. I think in the long run it will come to haunt the Stark family, but in the moment, it was pretty bad ass.[/SPOILER:744ee7980d]
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the faster paced episodes as well, but this one really showed some true character development.
[SPOILER:744ee7980d]Arya Stark training with Syrio seems to be Ned's way of enabling her. I look forward to seeing the trouble she causes. Maybe she'll stab a Lannister... that would make me smile.
King Robert is a pathetic obnoxious man. He uses his power for personal satisfaction and has seemingly no political ambitions (good or bad). Out of sight, out of mind. I don't understand why he is so lethargic when it comes to ruling.
Jaime is a piece of shit. I mean, that guy is awful. He is evil, has sex with his sister, and can't even be pleasant. If Robert does one thing I like, it is annoying the fucking shit out of Jaime.
I am actually beginning to think that the Lannister kids might not be Roberts. They are all very similar in action and in looks to the Lannister adults... either way, Jaime and Cersei are fucking gross.

I can't believe I forgot to check for your post :O
[SPOILER:ea1f22247e]I agree, I loved how Catelyn set up getting Tyrion arrested. I'm still not convinced that it was Tyrion that ordered the hit on Bran, tho. It seems against his nature, especially after stopping by Winterfell to give instructions on how Bran can learn to ride while being a cripple. He seems to care too much to order a hit on a kid. I think he's been framed.
I'm curious why Robert is such a disinterested king. What led him to fight for the throne if he had no ambitions after he became king? It seems like someone like Ned should have taken the throne instead of Robert, who apparently has no interest in running the kingdom.
Jamie can go fall off a cliff and die.
I agree. I think Joffrey and his siblings are not Robert's kids.
I love how Daenerys is finally coming into her own, so to speak. Her brother has essentially married her into a position of power over him. Apparently he failed to realize that being king of the seven kingdoms doesn't mean jack when he's traveling with a horde of barbarians on the other side of an ocean.[/SPOILER:ea1f22247e]

I tend to agree... I think that the whore manager in the city is definitely a bad guy who is playing both sides... The attack seems like it might have been conspired by one of the other siblings with an offer of power to the whore monger.

Her brother is going to do something very, very bad. I don't know what, but he is definitely lining up to destroy something in a nasty way. Some how though, those dragons are going to get involved...[/SPOILER:563c642ef7]

I just made a similar post in the Reading section, but here goes anyway.....
I'm curious if those of you who haven't read the books find the plot difficult to follow? Having read the books myself, I feel like the plot would be pretty confusing if I didn't know all the backstory and everything that's involved.
But from what I hear (and what you guys seem to be saying), they're doing a good job of explaining everthing.

Ice, the first two episodes should have been shown together. After those two were done, everything made much more sense. They have thickened character development since as well.
If a person just watched the first or the second episode independent of the other, it is frustrating because there is just too much that isn't answered about the characters.
Lucky for all who watch it going forwards, there is no one week delay to see Episodes 1 & 2 together now

Yeah Ice, I'm following the show okay. :3 There have been a few instances where I lose track of who's who but reading back on, say, the wiki or whatever helps with that.
What were your thoughts on last night's episode, GPF?

I am not a blood and guts type of person. This episode, along with this week's The Borgias, was difficult to watch given the graphic violence that was in it. Even at 30 and knowing this shit is fake doesn't take away from the fact that I'll probably have nightmares of some of the stuff in these shows for a few weeks at least.
Don't get me wrong, I watch some very violent films, but gratuitous violence has always bothered me.
Game of Thrones:
[SPOILER:4d1a98e1f5]Chopping off the horse's head? The knife into the eye? The shield into the face?
Bleh...
As for the plot, I had to rewind to catch it, but it was Varys that Arya overheard in the dungeon. When I saw that, it changed things drastically. I knew he was bad, but I had more faith in him than I did Littlefinger.
I don't understand how Jaime thinks he will get away with attacking Ned. I think that the end of this season might conclude that fight.
The Imp might be a better person that originally imagined. Not necessarily good, but at the same time, perhaps he isn't a typical Lannister.
And of course... what the fuck is wrong with Lysa Arry? Who breast feeds like that ever... and to a kid who is that large? Also is the kid retarded? Nothing good can occur up in that towering castle...
There was no progress shown for the Dothraki or the Wall. I wonder what is going on with Benjen... I got a bad feeling when he said he was traveling beyond the wall for a month.[/SPOILER:4d1a98e1f5]
The Borgias
[SPOILER:4d1a98e1f5]They shot a canon ball chain linked to another canon ball into a battalion of soldiers. It literally cut people in half with guts everywhere.[/SPOILER:4d1a98e1f5]

[SPOILER:00762c6206]The violence you mentioned caught me by surprise in this episode as well. The Mountain trying to hack the horse's head off was kind of out of nowhere, but I suppose it's there to show you just now crazy evil he is? I didn't catch why his horse freaked out until the second time I watched it, though.
Varys surprised me, but Mormont surprised me too. It seems each of them is actually playing for the other side? Mormont, I'm assuming, is feeding information back to Robert and the crown in hopes of getting a pardon and being allowed back into the country. Varys, I have no idea, but maybe he's hoping for a better position if Viserys takes the throne?
Jamie Lannister... I understand his attack on Ned, because Ned's wife just took his brother prisoner for charges he thinks, or probably knows, are false. He probably thought if he took custody of Ned, he could contact Catelyn and trade Ned for his brother Tyrion. Unfortunately, someone else interfered, and spoiled Jamie's sport in seeing if he could beat Ned Stark in a fight, which led to him just leaving Ned for dead in the street.
Tyrion Lannister... I don't think he had a hand in the hit on Bran. I think he's actually a decent guy, and he even bailed on a chance to escape in favor of defending Catelyn. I also doubt he had any hand in Jon Arryn's death. I doubt his siblings are nearly as innocent, though.
Speaking of Jon Arryn... holy crap, Lysa Arryn is nuts. I'm amazed Catelyn had no idea how crazy her sister has become. Taking Tyrion to her seemed like a stupid idea. I'm actually confused why she chose to go there. Why not take Tyrion back to Winterfell? Or even King's Landing? Maybe she wanted to take Tyrion to a pesudo-"neutral" location to await trial.
I also think we already know what Jon Arryn discovered. Everything mentioned so far is pointing to the fact that all of Robert's bastard children that he's fathered are dark-haired with his features... yet all three of his children with Cersei are pale blonds. I think Jon Arryn figured that Robert didn't father those three children.
I was also surprised by the flash of penis we got in this episode. Is HBO trying to catch up to Starz's level of nudity? 8D[/SPOILER:00762c6206]

[SPOILER:8c678a4cfc]Littlefinger leans into talk to Sansa after it happens and says that the Knight of Flowers (I forget his name, the dude in the shiny light armor) knew that his horse, which was a mare, was in heat. The Mountain's horse was male and was, to be blunt, all hot and bothered by the other horse being in heat, and thus didn't perform as he should have. The Mountain was so angry with it that he thus tried to hack its head off. That's why Sansa frowns and says that the Knight of Flowers wouldn't resort to such trickery, and Littlefinger makes a comment about how when lots of money is involved, people will do a lot of things.[/SPOILER:8c678a4cfc]

Yeah... I totally missed that the conversation was directly linked to the action. Thank you for explaining. I feel great anticipation regarding what will happen to Ned and Catelyn this coming week.

Don't know if everyone's heard about it, but apparently the 7th episode will be available on HBO Go directly after the 6th finishes on TV. So, if you want to watch it right away instead of waiting a week for it to air, you can catch it online.
