I just have a basic Samsung phone, but I hope to someday upgrade to a more advanced phone, preferably one that can act as a modem as I'd rather use internet on a laptop rather than a phone. I may get one that also has good emulator support. Are there any mobile devices other than video game portables that have something like a D-pad?

You can pry my HTC Incredible from my cold, dead hands.
AND I'D STILL BE TWEETING.
And to further elaborate: The main reason I got a smartphone (other than having a hard on for HTC phones) was for the fact I spent way to much god damn time on my computer. Like a lot of you guys (I assume) I find time with friends online to be just as (if not more) fun than hanging out with people. It got to the point where you don't show up in a chat or post at a certain time in the day and everyone's "Hey! Where's Lottel?" Grabbed the smartphone so I could still "be online" but be in the real world too. Not feel like I had to stay home to be in contact with internet friends. Yeah. Skype on an android saved my life.
Of course, now I'm addicted to tweeting and checking random facts constantly.
BUT WHATEVER.

As some of you found out yesterday, I figured out how to use IRC on my phone... without typing. The voice recognition on that shit is crazy good. For fast response, I'll definitely be avoiding the keyboard. For the forums though, a bit more punctuation is appropriate, so most likely not much posting to here from the phone. I guess I'll only be posting here 12 hours a day instead of 18.

I really didn't expect the demographic to wind up like this. I was under the impression that many more people had iPhones. I am astonished that not a single person has a modern Windows phone. I figured 1/50... sure at least one...
There are ~30 of you though that haven't bought smart phones yet. I bet if we did this poll in another year, the changes will be huge.

I WANT a smart phone, but I'm still on my parents' cell plan and they won't pay for data and I think it's pointless to have one then.

Now that Verizon has the iPhone I imagine there will be more people trying it out. Once I get my upgrade though I am going the same route as you, with the Thunderbolt. But then again in a couple months there will probably be another "Awesome" phone coming out.

Yeah I'm with you GP. I figured just about everyone had Smart Phones these days.
I was blown away by the fact most people had standard phones.

Yeah I just have no use for a smart phone and they want way too much money for one. I can get a standard phone for free or I can drop 150+ on a smart phone that I'll use like twice a week if I'm lucky. I seriously only use my phone to get Facebook updates and occasionally texts/calls between me and my family. Other than that I never talk to anyone with my phone so I cannot justify the cost. If my Dad hadn't put me on his plan I wouldn't even bother with a phone because the cost is too high for how little I use it.

Not everyone is in a situation where they need a fucking smart phone. I can afford it, but I'd rather spend my money on something else.
I pay 30 dollars a month for unlimited text, voice and internet. What the fuck else do I need? To be able to play Angry Birds while I'm taking a shit?

i use my phone for facebook, pandora music, twitter, games/emulation, texting, googling stuff, navigation/gps, email, sports scores, webcomics, woot/amazon deals, camera/camcorder, and to keep my niece distracted when she is busy being annoying.

I can do all of that on my little 30 dollar a month phone except GPS and Pandora. I'm not bitching at people who happen to have a smart phone, I'm just bitching at the people who scoff at people who don't have one.

I roll with a HTC Evo 4G on the $20 (+$10 premium data) Sprint Third Party Indirect Dealer plan (third party salesman plan). It's a great phone, and okay service. If you don't have a discount, find someone you trust implicitly to get on the $129.99 plan and split it.
And I use my phone for everything. In fact, it's more powerful and advanced than a lot of laptops. I just think it's silly to not at least have a phone that can do more than just make phone calls. Even if you're not that kind of person, a smartphone that is cheap and affordable is something you can do.
The key to it all is to stay about 6-10 months behind the curve, that way you don't jump into a mistake of a phone (read: Kyocera Echo) or pay too much for a phone (I'm talking to you, Verizon.).

I find it hilarious how some people refer to the iPod Touch as the iTouch. x3

I have a dinky pay-as-you-go whose minutes roll over every year and I never use anything close to all of them. So they just keep stacking up.
But I do visit this site with my DSi XL. And I have to say that it is the only site I frequent (with images turned off) that doesn't immediately run out of memory.
The only problem with this site is that you can't read the smaller sized text screen, so I have to drag the box around while reading the other screen. But that is still less hassle than running out of memory...damn you, internet!!!!

The Verizon Wireless 4G network has been lauded as lightning-fast. Now, the company is launching a second phone that will work with its speeds. The Droid Charge.
Aside from the manufacturer, however, the phones differ little in hardware specs. Both have 4.3-inch displays, front- and back-facing cameras with the same resolutions (1.3 and 8 megapixels, respectively), and the ability to act as a 4G mobile hotspot. |
Always something new on the horizon. Thats why I love that Best Buy commerical It's seriously the truth.

Original Motorola Droid I got as a hand-me-down. I see no reason to upgrade.

I've posted this link before but if you are due for an upgrade go to this link.
www.amazonwireless.com It's a beta program and they offer heavy discounts on upgrades.
Edit: Also what's the point of having the Thunderbolt when you're not in a 4G area?
