The IAEA is a joke. They make rules, but they're only recommendations and nobody's forced to follow them. Great fucking idea when dealing with corporations.

Thankfully, other countries seem to take it very seriously and inspect their nuclear plants to make sure they respect all the norms.

The same shit could happen here in my state, we're on the ring of fire (earthquake) we're on the coast (tsunami), and we've got The Hanford Nuclear site on the Columbia River. Plus we've got an active volcano so yeah... Confused

Necrorelevance!

So, has anything changed yet? The US media's pretty sparse on any hard information, but Russia Today was reporting there might be a collapse at Reactor 4. This shit, methinks, is WAY worse than we're hearing. Also, sad that I trust RT a little more than US news services.

Double post, shame on me. Here's what CNN is saying:
http://articles.cnn.com/2011-03-12/world/japan.nuclear_1_nuclear-reactors-nuclear-plant-meltdown?_s=PM:WORLD

This is from several hours before that article came up:
http://www.zerohedge.com/article/nhk-reports-fukushima-reactor-1-melting-down

That's not good shit. Not at all. And all of that fucking radioactive water they're pumping? They're just putting millions on millions of gallons of water and spreading the shit all around the place. Those motherfuckers should be tried at the Hague!

That's been my stance since I found out it happened.

It's cool now, seriously. I can't believe I made such a big deal over this. I didn't realize they were going to USE GIGANTIC TENTS to help the situation. Google it, I'm so disgusted I won't even put up a link. And still, major news outlets? Meh, nobody cares.

Yes, like aeonic posted, there really is a meltdown in Reactor unit 1. It's now officially announced by TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power Company):

Quote:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/japan/8509502/Nuclear-meltdown-at-Fukushima-plant.html

Engineers from the Tokyo Electric Power company (Tepco) entered the No.1 reactor at the end of last week for the first time and saw the top five feet or so of the core's 13ft-long fuel rods had been exposed to the air and melted down.

Previously, Tepco believed that the core of the reactor was submerged in enough water to keep it stable and that only 55 per cent of the core had been damaged.

Now the company is worried that the molten pool of radioactive fuel may have burned a hole through the bottom of the containment vessel, causing water to leak.

"We will have to revise our plans," said Junichi Matsumoto, a spokesman for Tepco. "We cannot deny the possibility that a hole in the pressure vessel caused water to leak". (....)

Meanwhile, Tepco said on Wednesday that it had sealed a leak of radioactive water from the No.3 reactor after water was reportedly discovered to be flowing into the ocean. A similar leak had discharged radioactive water into the sea in April from the No.2 reactor.

Greenpeace said significant amounts of radioactive material had been released into the sea and that samples of seaweed taken from as far as 40 miles of the Fukushima plant had been found to contain radiation well above legal limits. Of the 22 samples tested, ten were contaminated with five times the legal limit of iodine 131 and 20 times of caesium 137.

The findings of the report, which has been given to the International Atomic Energy Agency, were revealed by the Yomiuri newspaper, which described a "melt-through" as being "far worse than a core meltdown" and "the worst possibility in a nuclear accident."

A spokesman for Tokyo Electric Power Co. said the company is presently revising the road-map for bringing the plant under control, including the time required to achieve cold shutdown of the reactors.

In a best-case scenario, the company says it will be able to achieve that by October, although that may have to be revised in light of the report.

Water that was pumped into the pressure vessels to cool the fuel rods, becoming highly radioactive in the process, has been confirmed to have leaked out of the containment vessels and outside the buildings that house the reactors.

Tepco said it is trying to contain the contaminated water and prevent it from leaking into the sea, but elevated levels of radiation have been confirmed in the ocean off the plant.

TOKYO (AP) — A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 hit Japan's northeastern coast on Sunday, prompting a brief tsunami warning for the area still recovering from a devastating quake and killer wave four months ago.

Residents in coastal areas were warned to evacuate for about two hours after the quake, but there were no immediate reports of damage.
The quake hit at 9:57 local time (0057 GMT), and a warning of a tsunami was issued for most of the northeastern coastline. The epicenter of the quake was in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Japan's main island, Honshu, at a depth of about 20 miles (30 kilometers).

Although this source is only about a month old, everyone should see these amazing photos regarding Japan's cleanup efforts.

This disaster was of course all over mainstream news six months ago, but currently I will admit that Japan has not been in my thoughts and hopes. I am glad to see that efforts are going marvelously.

Found on Reddit.

Yeah, stuff like this is what would make being a Pat Robertson-type so damn fun.

"Well you know, Japan is still paying the price for that sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. It's true. God told me. See, it may have happened 70 years ago, but for God that's like a second."

God was never mad about the Pearl Harbor thing. The real reason he's punishing Japan is because they canceled Mega Man Legends 3.

Wouldn't it have been more appropriate for all upset about that decision to line up single file, track down the one who made it and smack them in the back of the head one-by-one?
