From Kotaku. http://kotaku.com/5800676/soulcalibur-v-due-next-year-heres-a-small-trailer

Quote:
Namco Bandai has announced that a fifth entry in the Soulcalibur series is due for release in 2012. As of yet there are no other details than those, but you can check out some shaky-cam footage of the debut trailer!

The trailer doesn't really show much, but the game is official now. Thoughts/speculation?

Here's hoping for a true weapon master mode! I wonder who the guest characters are gonna be this time around?

Hopefully no guest characters.

Also, next year? This better make it onto Project Cafe.

A tale of Swords and Souls, eternally AWESOME (Well, if you don't consider Legends Razz )
After Soul Edge, I've played every title, they are great fun and everyone can play (Not well, but at least they won't get curb stomped like they would in Street Fighter, or, let's say, KOF ). Looking forward to this, very much so. Smile
No guest characters has always been my policy (I might have to rethink it if the whole Freddy and Jason as MK DLC turns out to be true though Razz )

17 year age gap is for the best IMO, more room for differences such as character aging, deaths, etc.

What I want to see:

-Character creation that doesn't have the clothing effect your stats, for me to make the best guy in SCIV he looked like a cross between the Phantom of the Opera and Johnny Bravo.
-A good single-player experience akin to SCII.
-No shitty A.I. like in SCIII which could turn from dumb as a rock to going Art of Fighting and start button-reading and countering with pixel-perfect precision.
-A challenging final boss, Algol was cool but easy, same with Inferno. Night Terror barely showed up at all in SCIII, and the same game already had crapass A.I. that became more challenging than him.
-The ability to edit a created character's move-set, I really dislike having to steal from other characters or at least give us weapons that aren't used by the official characters as well.

Where do they say there's a 17 year age gap?

How about stop changing the inputs? Or at least find some time to include the movesets from the past games.

They haven't changed them too radically IMO. I can still basically play my Mitsurugi in IV as well as I could in the original.

All I know is that all my favorite characters, specifically Sophitia, better be in this. Otherwise, I could give a fuck less about it.

THIS. Very much so.
The system from Soul Calibur III was fine, I mean, there was a "Good Vs. Evil" semi-hidden stat, but it didn't even matter all that much. Also, there were 10 weapons that were (almost) exclusive to the created characters. I remember I had quite a few nice-looking characters in my "Tales of the Sword" mode. Speaking of that, that mode was kinda fun. I mean, it was as much about strategy as Chess Kombat, but it was still entertaining enough without taking too much of the game's space.

Astoroth was always my favorite, and Maxi.

I got into the game during SCII and it seems to have gone downhill from there.

And btw, wouldn't Sophitia be in her 50s or so with how the game's timeline works? Move on to the younger Cassandra! Smile

According to Soulpedia, Soul Calibur II was the last game in the continuity where the characters had aged at all. So Sophitia was 25 in SC4. She'd be 42 in SC5. Which is MILF range.

I hope it's not mostly new characters. There's only one cool new character in SF4, Gouken. The rest are crap.

Tekken 6 works because it has all the old guys, plus new ones. SC5 should follow that example.

Knowing Japan, we're likely to see Sophitia MILF and her seventeen year old daughter Pyrrha fighting side by side. I'd very much like to see the next generation of fighters involved in this game, like, for example, Pyrrha and Patroklos, and even Bangoo (If he's still alive Razz)
Oh, and I'm an Astaroth and Voldo guy. || <<<< That's a Voldo smiley, you can tell by the bands over the eyes and mouth Razz

He’s talking about Street Fighter IV, hence SF4. Olcadan (i.e. "the stupid owl guy") didn't even appear in SC4.

I wouldn't mind new guys, so long as they keep the old ones.

The last game two games to present such a large age gap were Street Fighter 3 and Tekken 3. Street Fighter 3, with its cast of mostly new characters and new fighting system, was a huge failure, and that's why Street Fighter 4 ended up taking placing as a direct sequel to SSF2 as opposed to SF3.

Tekken 3 introduced an almost entirely new cast of characters, which was somewhat irrelevant as the series wasn't especially popular up until that point. Still, fan backlash against Marshall Law's son Forest resulted in him being left out of all future games (except Tekken Tag 1) in favor of Marshall. Meanwhile, pretty much every former character in the series eventually reappeared in the main series, except Michelle Chang, who retired, and Jun Kazama, who died, and Kunimitsu, who disappeared. The original Kuma, King, and Armor King have all died but been replaced with identically named and similar playing characters, while the Jack line has been upgraded. Devil is still around, in that he is part of Kazuya, but has been replaced in storyline with Devil Jin. Angel was just an alternate skin of Devil and has been more or less forced out of canon.

But since Tekken 3, with the exception of Forest Law, all of the Tekken's playable characters have reappeared in its sequels. Except Mokujin, who was replaced with Combot in Tekken 4 to great backlash, and returned in Tekken 5.

Okay, enough Tekken history. The point is, you don't fuck with a good thing. People don't play the sixth installment of a fighting game because they like the engine or physics, they play it because they like the CHARACTERS. So okay, introduce the younger generation, and make them look young, but don't visibly age the original characters, especially the female characters, by more than 5-10 years.

I play everyone pretty equally, but I'm best with Siegfried.

As for guest characters, I loved that Lloyd Irving made it into Legends, and I would be ecstatic if another "Tales" character made it in.

I hope character creation also returns. One of SC4's few saving graces in my opinion. I made so many "guest characters" and they all looked pretty spot on. Only problem I had with it was the transfer of moves, meaning female movesets with male characters. Kinda hard for Zelos the ladies man to look cool while jumping at you with his ass.

Also, Critical Finishes. I liked some of them, but they were kinda hard to pull off (also a good thing, since they shouldn't be spammable). What do you guys think?

What I'd like to see:
-Character Creation
-Weapon Master Mode as good as SC2
-All old characters return with a few new faces
-1 or 2 guest characters with a stage

Also, why the hell is Raphael now a vampire? He was my favorite character in SC2, and it makes no sense.

So I got this for my birthday. I've been playing it a lot lately. Here are the pros and cons:

Pros:
1. It's fun

Cons:
1. There is a short Story Mode that features 20 battles. It centers almost entirely on Patroklos and Pyrrha and they are the two primary playable characters in it. Occasionally you play as ZWEI, too.
2. Story/Arcade/Live battles now are best out of 3 instead of best out of 2. WHEN HAS IT EVER FUCKING BEEN THIS WAY IN ANY FIGHTING GAME EVER? You can change the setting in Live/Offline battles, but good luck finding an opponent if you change it on Live.
3. Arcade Mode doesn't have prologues and epilogues for any of the characters. So all those new characters they introduced? And the ones that returned? If you wanted to know anything about them, too fucking bad. Which brings up another point, why bother with new characters at all outside of Pyrrha and Patroklos when the game has minimal story? Why not just use all old characters? Because hey, you know who they are and apparently you shouldn't cares why they're there?
4. THREE characters on the main roster are mimics. Edge Master, Kilik, and Elysium. Kilik wears a stupid mask in both his costumes. It can be broken in battle, but he doesn't have an alt that doesn't wear. Elysium is the living embodiment of Soul Edge and she looks like Sophitia because that's what Patroklos wanted it to look like. She also wears a dumb face mask.
5. The game is VERY short on modes. It has Arcade Mode, Legendary Souls (a harder version of arcade mode), Versus, Online Versus, and Quick Match.
6. Ezio has projectiles, much like Link did, and continues the fine tradition of unfair guest characters.

Overall, the game feels VERY half-assed and poorly done. A big draw of Soulcalibur and Tekken has always been their continuity, and this fucking cuts most of that out. Guess they're saving that feature for the inevitable enhanced Vita (and possibly Wii U) port.

Thanks for the heads-up, Syd. I've enjoyed, for the most part, the whole series, but a main draw for me is the storyline, and without prologues and epilogues, I doubt I'll give too much of a damn. I'll be putting that money towards a PS3; I'll still probably get it, but I'll wait until it's in the bargain rack at Gamestop.

Who likes role-playing games? Me. Way too goddamn much.

I like it better than the SC4 fighting system but not as well as the SC2 system. I don't understand why Soul Calibur needed energy bars and super moves, and I wish they wouldn't have brought them back again, but I guess they have to compete with Capcom and Arc. Hell, even Mortal Kombat is in on that trend now.
