Dallas Wiens experience represents a new frontier for reconstructive surgery.
His injury happened in November 2008 when Wiens, now 26, was painting his church as a volunteer: His head got too close to a high-voltage power line, and he lost almost his entire face from the burns.
In a 15-hour procedure in mid-March, doctors gave Wiens a donor forehead, nasal structure, nose, lips and facial skin. They also transplanted underlying muscles and nerves that will allow Wiens to have sensation and movement in his face.
"When I woke up, and I was able to feel I had features again -- eyes and a nose and a mouth -- I even said out loud that this could not be medically possible," Wiens said Monday. "But here I am today."
Wiens said his face "feels natural, as if it has become my own." |
This is seriously amazing.
I'm going to put the before and after photo in a SPOILER it's not horrible in a graphic sense (not nearly as bad as the Monkey attack photo that got passed around forever IMO) but some people really don't like burn victim pictures.

My first thought at seeing his face was the stone mask from Majora's Mask.
This is amazing that we have progressed so far in medical sciences. Maybe soon we'll be able to replace his eyesight too.

I would have said "Just make me look like Lowell Mathers from the acclaimed television series Wings".

If you look really closely at the glasses it looks he has eyes which is strange - at least i can see a pupil and iris. Look at the right hand lens of the glasses.
EDIT: or maybe it's a glass eye.
It looks really well considering the before and after. If i saw the after walking down the street i would think nothing of it - though since he's blind i guess he would have a cane.

They should have put the face of a mountain lion or a monkey on the guy, that would have been fucking sweet. Also, if I ever need a face transplant, that's what I may do.

If he had a metal plate screwed into the side, he'd look like Kano from MK.

I'm sure they don't work though. We don't have working eye implants yet, right?

Six blind patients have had their sight partially restored by a "bionic eye":

That is from four years ago, it's probably even better these days.

What is trippy about that bionic eye is that they forsee that it will one day improve upon human sight. That is some straight up cyborg shit.
