As of right now, the exchange rate is 1 CD to 1.05 USD! That's up from a whopping .62 to 1.00$ in 2000! All hail our northern liberators! Come buy our now less-expensive-for-you goods, that way we can help pay off the Chinese we exported them from!

What I'm wondering now is if it would just be easier for them to start swapping the position of the differentiated prices on books and stuff!
Seriously, though, the picture above pretty much says it all. Even the peso is making gains on the USD at this point.

That's true. You can use them out here to get pizza at Pizza Patron. Or for emergency toilet paper. Still, the US dollar is taking an allmighty beating, and it doesn't bode well. Not trying to be an alarmist, just kind of sad that QE2 is going to continue to devaluate it, amongst other things.

Those prices actually are what tells more of a story. A book doesn't cost more in Canada because of the exchange difference. A book costs more in Canada because a book costs more in Canada.
Canadian dollars may be worth more on the world market than US dollars, but that doesn't necessarily mean a Canadian dollar will buy more than a US dollar.
And yeah, the greenback may be taking a beating, but remember, it's still what other countries are comparing their money to. The US dollar remains the standard.

This is a very good point, at least until it's locked in a death-spiral with the yuan thanks to the US/Chinese mutually ensured destruction due to import/export symbiosis. You know, theoretically.

What I learnt in #sydlexia is that fucking everything is cheaper in the States, even converting to the same currency.

This should come as no surprise
Canada is kicking ass compared to the rest of the world when it comes to our economy, we were largely unaffected by the global recession and the first nation to emerge out of it, stronger then when we entered the recession.
This is also not the first time the Canadian dollar has performed better then the American Dollar
1957 The Loonie rose above $1.06 US
as well as in the years 1972,74 and 76 The Canadain Loonie was on par or higher then the American Dollar
This is not good for your friendly neighbors
exporting our goods to the US now costs more money, thus hurting our trade, its also bad for investments
The comment about a book costing more in Canada because a book costs more in Canada is very aggravating to me, not because it was posted but because of how correct that comment is.
Why should I have to pay $399 for an iPod that should cost $349? or $22 for a book that costs $17.50
hey NDP? want to form your first ever government in Canada? here is an idea
FORCE Repricing! Keep things fair for Canadian consumers and stop letting corporations gouge and rape us on commodities!

Let's assume it's a mixture of the two!

The Loonie is a coin worth $1 in Canada. The Canadian dollar is called a dollar.
Also, a Loonie was worth NOTHING in 1957 or during the 1970s; it didn't exist until 1987.

One of the prima causae of this is the fact that banking regulation is VERY different to the North.

You should compare yourself to the Euro, as it's the only currency that could eventually, maybe, have a chance of replacing the US$ as the currency standard.
Its value was set in 1999 to be exactly 1 USD. It's now almost 1,5 USD.
Well, maybe that can help for exports, I don't know.

All I'm getting out of this is the fact that America's still going down the toilet and probably will be for a while. -sigh-

Shit was so expensive in Canada. Back in the day, I could get almost $2 Canadien for every $1 US, but when I'd go to buy something, it cost a butt load more than it would back home. I went to buy a Coke from a machine and it was a dollar(unheard of in New York at the time, they were still .50). One top of that, it was some retarded size that was longer than a traditional can but thinner so that I somehow ended up paying more and getting less.

Ostensibly. I guess as much as there's anti-corruption protocols for those who govern. SPQR!
