I was saying "does not equal". Meaning, Sparta Man (the idiot from 300) is not Kurt Russel, therefore saying he CANNOT be snake plissken (and do it justice).

"does not equal" could technically mean "greater than" What you should have put is-
SpartaMan < Kurt Russel
Not that I'm agreeing with you on the matter of grindhouse being a shitty movie or not, but the above is universally true.

I HAVE SEEN GRINDHOUSE
There was a special screening today, which I HAD to see.
Amazing. Simply incredible.
First, "Planet Terror" starts off kinda slow, but I was surprised by the amount of action that followed. It really is the best action Rodriguez has ever directed. This film REALLY added a ton of grime to it to make it look old.
"Death Proof" is going to be the film people will have a problem with. I LOVED IT. But one guy did not. This guy was also a hater of the QT. Basically, this one is a talky. There's a lot of talking. If you're cool, you can probably listen to hours of QT writing and be fine, and this film will test your dedication. But, it features some of the best suspense I've ever experienced from a film AND had one of THE BEST CAR CHASES OF ALL TIME. That's right: ALL TIME (not year, decade, or last thirty years).
Absolutely this film is not for everyone. The critics WILL hate it, I guarantee. But the films are great, the inside jokes/references are nice, the cameos are cool, and THE TRAILERS ARE REALLY REALLY FUNNY!!! ^_^
Alas, nothing after the credits, don't stay.

I saw it at 10 p.m. last night. It turns out that this was the only showing in the ENTIRE metro-Atlanta area (and only TEN PEOPLE showed up for it). Two guys I talked to said they'd driven 45 miles to get to it.
All in all I have to say it was awesome, and all the mentioned trailers are there, with only some slight edits (there's still toplessness in the Werewolf Women one and the guy getting decapitated during his blowjob in Thanksgiving).
My only complaint is that Deathproof has a loose ending that needs tying up (involving the Rose McGowen character, I think).

I was thinking the same, until I remembered the "From Dusk Till Dawn" commentary where QT says that the Roger Corman philosophy of making movies is: "Once the ____ is dead, you're movie is officially over!" So the abrupt ending felt very much in style with those films, not to mention the thousands of other movies that have endings where not everything is tied up... Say the films mentioned in this thread.

I've never been a fan of Tarantino; "Reservoir Dogs" was a cheap rip-off (plot-wise) of Chow Yun Fat's "City of Fire", and "Pulp Fiction" was simply a decent film, no more, no less.
The quality of both movies stems from the memorable and quotable acting performances of its characters, played by half of the good actors in Hollywood, not the script itself.
And the "Kill Bill" series was fucking atrocious. Shitty dialogue that made me want to beat Tarantino over the head with my shoe, and some of the worst action sequences I've ever seen in a film with a budget.
Tarantino strikes me as a self-important douchebag who considers himself a hundred times wittier, deeper, and all-knowing than he really is. I simply can't stand the philosophical drivel he injects more and more of into his films.
Basically, I'm going to watch "Grindhouse" for the fake trailers (I'm a big fan of Rob Zombie) and Robert Rodriguez's "Planet Terror", since RR has, at the very least, an original, creative bone in his body, and knows how to film action sequences.

Both filmmakers are attacked and hated were I'm from. While I'm a fan of Rodriguez, I do agree that his love of digital cinema is hurting his films, that and his sense of humor. While I love the hell out of "Sin City", the tone was all wrong. Was the humor needed to keep the film from becoming too much? In the comic the dark material is only as effective as you let it be, and the film could've taken it to the next level. Instead, it went in another direction, which I see why Rodriguez did it, but I'm still disappointed that it wasn't the uber-dark film that some people wanted. But one major problem I had with "Planet Terror" was the obvious reliance on CG; it looked too expensive to effectively be a Grindhouse film. Rodriguez's fight for digital cinema is a good thing, but sometimes it feels like he's the lone supporter of it.
But any argument for one filmmaker can be made for the other with this film. They're both in the same bed.
BTW, I'm surprised no one's mentioned "Four Rooms" yet. The other joint venture, that time four directors making 4 half hour films.

Now that the film's out, it is time to point out the cut material that made the trailer:
This cut was heartbreaking.
Man, I wanna make a gif of this. (aaaaaaand done.)
Why does "Death Proof" have the only deleted footage!?
This is in the movie, but from a different angle.

I THOUGHT I saw "Scary Movie 4" on that marquee.
I like Quentin Tarantino's work with dialogue (even working a version of it as the marine in Planet Terror with the garden conversation). I'd been mentioning 4 Rooms to some of the people waiting for the theater to finish cleaning "Are We Done Yet?" so we could watch our movie. I didn't know Rodriguez teamed up with him on that one.
I also laughed at refences to kahuna burger, foot massages, and "tasty beverage." All in Deathproof.

EW reported that QT is reediting a longer cut of his film for Cannes. Haha!
I'm happy there will be a longer cut, but I highly doubt it'll win anything.
BTW, I think I was wrong in my prediction that people would hate "Death Proof", because so far all my friends who've seen it actually loved it. That makes me glad.
Jeebus alone has proved me wrong. Horrors!

I loved this movie. I'm not sure what it was, but I loved the whole thing.
For those that wish to see it, go and see it. It has been such a long time since I have had a decent movie-going experience, but it was worth it.
*Spoilers...? Sure. Lets go with that.*
The "Missing Footage" of Planet Terror made my night, week, and may even have made my year. I'm not sure why, but it amused me.

Just saw this movie with Syd. He and I had very different experiences, as we often do at movies. I loved the fake trailers, though I missed most of Rob Zombie's as I ran to the bathroom and to get a refill on soda. Planet Terror I thought was brilliant. I feel no need to go into detail because it was just plain good.
However, Death Proof is the most God awful piece of shit I have ever seen in my life. I've seen some terrible movies in my life, but I genuinely feel that this is the worst of the worst. If I wasn't with Syd, I would have walked out. This part may contain spoilers, but the movie sucks so I can't spoiler it more than it is. While I agree the car chase was awesome, certainly one of the best ever, it was probably about 5 minutes in total of like a 90 minute movie. The other 85 minutes was talking. Sure there were some funny jokes here and there, but there were also the jokes I heard in fucking middle school which I always hate hearing in TV or movies. The two characters with the most dialogue are also the most stereotypical sassy black girl possible and some girl with an Australian accent. If a movie is going to be nothing but dialogue and, very literally, NO plot, the dialogue should really be more than generic stereotypes. I did get a little kick out of the "Brand X" license plate on the Mustang they drove in it, but I think that's too obscure for most people to get (Not like George Takai's license plate on Heroes being NCC1701). I'm sure I have more to say, but the whole thing makes me too angry to say it all.

It has nothing to do with being cool. Tarantino is overrated and clearly thinks of himself as an artist, but he's a terrible writer as far as I'm concerned.

Completely agree, and it's one of the reasons I found Kill Bill Vol. 2 even more unbearable than the original.

I totally knew you'd pick out "cool" to respond to.
By "cool", I meant myself. <--- see? Cool. Like Fonzie.
Yes, I had that answer in my head since I wrote the line.
Edit: I had also considered using:
I knew you'd say that.

I liked both movies, but I can understand why people wouldn't like Death Proof as it was a lot more talky than Planet Terror. My only real complaints about Death Proof were:
1. Zoe and Kim weren't particularly likeable characters, so it was really hard to root for them. Especially Kim.
2. Abby never finds out the previous connection between her and Stuntman Mike.
3. Kurt Russell had nowhere near enough screen time.
Despite this, I still thoroughly enjoyed "Death Proof". One of my favorite parts of "Death Proof" was how there were no disturbing medical photos in it.

'Grindhouse' Patrons Not Getting Money's Worth
Some moviegoers who bought tickets to see the Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino "double bill" Grindhouse were apparently unaware that the feature comprised two separate movies -- and walked out after the first one, Rodriguez's Planet Terror, ended, published reports said today (Tuesday). "I don't think people understood what we were doing," Weinstein told today's New York Post. "The audience didn't get the idea that it is two movies for the price of one." The walk-outs could offer another partial explanation for the film's disappointing performance at the box-office. Most critics agreed that the second movie, Tarantino's Death Proof, was the superior of the two. Daily Variety also reported that The Weinstein Co. is overhauling its ad campaign but will be facing stiff competition next weekend when seven -- count 'em, seven -- new films open. The Post added that the company is also considering re-releasing the two movies as separate offerings in longer versions, as it had already decided to do overseas and on DVD.
JEEZ, if you're going to see a movie, at least have the sanity to look up the runtime before you head out; even failing that you should have an inkling of what sort of movie you're going to see.

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!
Director's cuts or not, the two films should be released on one fucking DVD.

I agree. I wouldn't pay $9.25 to see Planet Terror by itself, let alone Deathproof. And the critics are saying Deathproof is the stronger of the two movies??!! It's enough to make me hunt for a gif of Lewis Black in mid-rage and then exploding!

When we saw it there were actually a couple people who left because they didn't realize it was two movies. I wanted to tell them, but clearly they didn't like Planet Terror anyway. Do people ever know what they're going to see anymore, or do they jus tpick a random movie that's showing?

Man, what has become of our society where they are unaware of what a double feature is? It's not like we don't have them anymore.
There was that double feature Spider-Man and MIB II a few years ago, for example.
