That's right, I'm here announcing two new RPGs for the members of these boards, if they're interested. Instead of going through a separate client like our current D&D game and having it meet once a week, it's going to be on these forums and played through postings (called "Play-by-post" or PbP).
Syd has agreed to donate a forum to us for the purpose of these games, and GPF is working on a way to roll dice on the forums, and we have two people already willing and ready to run games. So all we need are players.
How does play-by-post work? Well, the same way a game would work in real life, although honestly a bit slower. Your GM describes the scene in a post, and you describe your actions. You roll dice to see if you succeed or fail based on your abilities. The GM will probably have their own ways of running things, but that's up to them.
I want to make it very clear that if you want to play, but aren't sure you know how, or it seems to complicated, or any other doubts, don't worry. We have more than a few experienced roleplayers around that can help you out, and we're not a bunch of stick-in-the-mud assholes. As long as you're willing to put a little effort into it, you can play, and honestly, we want you to.
Here are the two games we're kicking off with, and who to talk to. They should post here with more details and the like later on:
Sehkmaenzo is going to be running a Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) version 3.5 game. This is not the most current edition, but is the more popular one among roleplayers right now. D&D is the classic RPG, a high fantasy swords-and-sorcery game.
Fernin is going to be running a GURPS Supers game. GURPS is a roleplaying system that is designed to be used in any setting, and the Supers setting is a superhero genre. Players will be creating superheroes to form a team and stop supervillains, just like in the comics.
A few questions answered, of course we will answer more. Direct game-specific questions to either Sehk or Fernin, though.
So how do I join?
You need to ask the person running the game, Fernin for the Superheroes one, Sehkmaenzo for the D&D one. They will be letting people know what you need to do to join their game. Note that there very likely will be a player limit for their games. Other than that, the only thing I would say is a commitment to come by and check out things at least once a day to see if people are waiting on you to do something. This isn't something you can take a look at once a week or so.
Where is this forum we're playing the games on?
Syd hasn't made it yet. But he said he will. Right?
How will dice rolls be done? What keeps someone from just changing them?
GPFontaine has made a neat dice rolling script, and I am 98% sure posts can be set in the PbP forum so that they can't be edited except by the mods. If this isn't the case, we'll have to find some other solution. One option is to just let the GM roll all the dice, but that's kind of boring.
Can I run a game?
Right now, probably not a good idea. Let's see if these two work out first. If they do well, and there's still a demand for players, talk to me.
Where can I get books?
Ask your GM if you need books. DO NOT LINK TO COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL IN THIS THREAD. The base rules for D&D 3.5 are okay, you can get for free here: http://www.d20srd.org/
That's all for right now. Fernin and Sehk will be describing their games eventually, I'm sure. Any more questions, feel free to ask away.
Just had a yaygasm. If there is ever a need for more games, I might start one up. Because, you know, running three already isn't enough. It's never enough. Put the RP in my veins!

I'm down for the D&D one for right now. May possibly branch out to superheroes at some point, but I'm much more creative when it comes to high fantasy than with superheroes.

I'm with you on this one Miss Hawk. The biggest problem for me with superheros is the balance between an interesting and human character and the fact that the character is superhuman and should be almost unstoppable.

And yet, somehow, they managed to challenge Superman for all these years.
I already threw me hat in for the D&D thingamajigger, and if anyone needs help finding books/information, I have every book in physical form and e-backups for them from 3.5 and most of 3.0.

Just posting to remark that there's also the Mutants & Masterminds series, which is basically superheroes with the good d20 system.
Also, if you have a rules question for 3.5 hit me up on PM, AIM, or Facebook although the DM is always the final arbiter.

Never played before or seen a game played, I think I want to watch the first game and see how it works, and if It seems like something I'm interested in, and it all works out, I'll jump in next time.

I'm rapidly approaching DM fatigue from weekly sessions with my friends for the last two years. I'd love to play in a pbp to ease the strain.

M&M is a luscious system and I've been using it 4- 4 1/2 years on one game. I also have all the books for it (except Nocturnals, damn yooouuuu Dan Brereton!)

Wow so much love for D&D already! :3
Well, I'm gonna give you guys a little bit of background on the campaign I'm gonna run. I shall elaborate more the moment we get the official definitive thread and all.
The land of Crescent ( named after the crescent moon-shaped ocean that surrounds the only continent ) is a small unconnected plane lost in the cosmos, found and then populated by planewalkers. The sons and daughters of these heroes inherited the spirit of conquest, and their eagerness to explore quickly turned the strange new land of wonder and magic into a huge civilization, and while humanity is thriving, the spirit of adventure has taken a hit. The people grow weary, and the land grows weak. These past few years have been cruel to the common folk, as the major kingdoms fought over whatever scrap of land they could, seeking for the thrill their heroic ancestry demands.
However, the winds of change have finally reached the shores of Crescent. The planewalkers, who were (and still are) adored as gods and kings, have all disappeared. The ocean, once calm as a lake, has become a raging turmoil of water, crawling with monsters, as if nature itself suddenly had something to guard, something to hide. The able men saw in this the adventure that the world had denied them for a hundred years, and took it as their personal quest to brave the newfound hazards, praying to the heavens that they would find something worthy of their bravery.
As it turned out, their prayers had been answered.
A new land has appeared beneath the energy walls surrounding Crescent. An entire continent, full of possibilities and mystery, appeared in the far edge of the world, as if inviting the brave and taunting the weak.
The prophets claim that the age of the crescent moon has ended, and that the years of the full moon have finally reached the land. The meaningless wars ended abruptly, as conquering the fellow men suddenly became less interesting.
The kingdoms have launched themselves to the sea.
Basically, that's the idea. The people of the land have prayed for adventure, and their prayer has been answered, and the campaign is gonna take place during these first explorations of the new land. Let me know what you guys think

You can usually find pretty good deals at used bookstores for the 3.x stuff for D&D.
Edit- I'm also still down to run in a supers game. GURPs is just one I haven't played in a long while and I'm not great with the system.

There's not a huge gulf in difference, and like Lordsathien, I know the rules pretty well and I'm always willing to help out too. That's part of the fun of the hobby is getting other people involved right?

My advice is go into the chatroom and ask that same question. I can say with near certainty that you sill have at least 3 people willing to give you advice and knowledge on the spot, including myself.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm not at all familiar with the system myself, nor are most of the folks who were interested the last time we tried to run the game in the chatroom. I've still never run a GURPS game, nor have I read most of the books involved. Along those same lines, though, I've never read the majority of the D&D books, I'm about as far from a rules lawyer as a DM can get, but I've never had any complaints from any of my players.

All I could hear when I read that part was this:
And I mean that as the highest complement. I can't wait to get started, it sounds great! Now I just have to figure out what kind of character to play.

The REAL question about the D&D campaign is... will anyone name their character Westley and take a certain prestige class from the complete adventurer?

How often or how quickly is a player responsible for acting/reacting?

It really depends on the game and the volume. The main PBP game that I run, per example, usually has players that post every other day or so, but some threads can get a lot faster, especially if they're between fewer people. In the D&D one that I run, most people post two or three times a week, slightly more in combat. Ultimately, it boils down to player participation and DM/Storyteller updating, but it is much slower than tabletop RPG games. Fernin and Sekh will probably be able to give you a better idea of what they're looking for.
