A planet's civilization travels at it's own pace. Thus, while we experience our modern era, other civilizations elsewhere could be behind us or ahead of us. For example, there could be several at their Medieval stages. Before you read any further, take note that I'm well aware that what I'm getting at is fictitious.
Final Fantasy was originally released in 1987, so the events of that game could have occurred while we were experiencing that year, only to be erased when the Light Warriors went back in time to when we were experiencing 13 B.C. and saved the planet, perhaps even the Universe. After that, several other planets and, as always, perhaps the Universe were being threatened almost annually, but the threats were always inevitably destroyed, all while we experienced the years of the games' releases.
This brings me to Final Fantasy VI. Released in 1994, not one, but two years after V and three years before VII, the game's events have a year-long gap between when Kefka destroys the World Of Balance and when Celes awakens in the World Of Ruin. Thus, the logical conclusion, based on my theory, is that only half of the game takes place while we experienced 1994...but which half?
Does the game begin while we experienced the year before and pick up the year of its release, or does it begin the year of its release and pick up the following year? Discuss and/or vote. You have a week for the latter.

Your post is nigh-incomprehensible but strangely tantalizing. What are you trying to explain?

Okay I figured it out, I think. He's saying that Final Fantasy games are all set in universes parallel to ours, and the year the game comes out is the year the events actually take place in their respective universe. So Final Fantasy 1 came out in 1987, and in the FF1 alternate universe, 1987 was the year it actually happened. Based on the release dates of the FF games, which one of our universe years did FFVI begin in?
Also how do the Japanese versus International release dates factor in?

I hate to break it to you but... They're just games, I mean how do you account for those guys in the credits called writers? Are they prophets?

My understanding is that each Final Fantasy, with few exceptions, take place in their own separate worlds.
Dragon Quest I-III, on the other hand, are a trilogy which take place in the same world at different times. Dragon Quest II takes place at some point after the original game, and I think Dragon Quest III is a prequel. I have yet to play DQ5 or DQ6, despite owning them, but I'm pretty sure I read that they form a trilogy with DQ4.

It happened in 1955.
7
Edit: Well, to be specific... it started in 1985, then went back to 1955, and then ended back in 1985.

No, no, no. Final Fantasy 6 took place in 1985, whereas Final Fantasy 5 took place in 1955. Final Fantasy 7 took place in an alternate 1985, caused by the time travel back to 1955 that occurred in Final Fantasy 6. Final Fantasy 8 takes places in 2015, and incorporates events that happened in BOTH 1985s.

You're right Syd. DQ IV-VI make up the "Zenithian Trilogy." With the exceptions of IV (After Years, VII (Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core, that Turks cel phone game), and X (X-2), none of the FF games have had any sequels.

So, in 1955 Sephiroth gets hit on by his mother Lucretia who is at the time a teenager after his father Hojo falls out of the tree or am I getting it all wrong? Please help me make sense of this.

Don't XII and Tactics take place in the same world?

XII, Tactics, and Vagrant Story are all part of the "Ivalice Alliance" series. I'm not sure on the status of FFTA, though it just dawned on me that XII also got a sequel on the DS so there's that as well.
