There must be some law that only in April can we get news about Bio Force Ape, a never-released NES game whose wild-ass title and premise spawned an awesome hoax in 2005. This, however, is legitimate: the ROM of the game is now available for you to download and play on an emulator, unless someone's gone to the trouble of putting an April Fool's message in at the end of it.

Basically, in three minutes I've been thrust around on high-speed platforms, body-slammed a few baddies Zangief-style. Seriously, this game rocks.

I must admit some of the falling animations are good for NES

Seta was previously known for releasing games of questionable quality, the most infamous of which is Castle of Dragon. I wouldn't put it past them to come up with this.

I think we all know and loathe that game by now. Castle of Dragon, I mean.

True dat, bus still the rest of it looks confusing and shitty.

Castle of the Dragon felt like it had super unforgivably hit detection and ass controls if I remember correctly.

Well, this one is unforgivably fast and has really weird jump controls. I see a pattern here.

Eh, I'll try it out anyway.

is the Buttermonster really in it, or was that all part of the original trolling thread?

Tried it, don't like it. The controls are pretty bad, the music is annoying, and the gameplay is just floaty and off. On the other side, the animation is impressive and the nostalgia factor is in full swing.

I think the concept was just ahead of it's time and in incapable hands. If someone were to make it today, I think it could be a whole lot better. The butter monster was awesome, that should be in it. Especially with the Communism punch.

Shake it, Quake it, Space Kaboom.

So what unreleased / prototype / pirate / rare games are actually worth playing? I've tried my hand at Grape Escape and it sucked.

The Legend of Zelda prototype is fun. Other than that, I don't recall any prototypes that stand out, really.

If we're talking non-NES, though, then dammit, Half-Life on the Dreamcast!

I remember being psyched about HL coming out for Dreamcast when I was younger (our PC couldn't run it), then just being pissed when it got cancelled. I only found out about the prototype recently because of an episode of Retsupurae.

I seem to have Half-Life for every platform except Windows. I own the PS2 and the Dreamcast port, but I have yet to buy it on Steam.

EDIT: also, this site is chock full of unreleased stuff that desperately needs to be found and ripped. http://www.unseen64.net/category/nin/nes/

i agree with this. the control seemed very slippery & floaty. and the stage design seemed all kinds fucked up.

I immediately became my 14 year old self upon starting this game, the scrolling is so smooth it actually looks like a PC game from the early Commander Keen days. The palette seems a lot more striking than most NES games I've played, that's for sure. Verdict's out on the gameplay until this pseudo-nostalgia wears off.
