Last we reported on this, back in September, a script was still being written, with no greenlight yet. It’s been in the works for awhile now; Don Cheadle has been talking about making the film for some time. Back in April, it looked like it was all gradually coming together, with Cheadle stating that we shouldn’t expect a traditional biopic, but rather… “It’s more my take, as an artist, on what his music has meant. With wall-to-wall truth but not really much concerned about facts.”
Cheadle also later told Vibe Magazine that he wants the film to be relevant today, not a history lesson, stating, “Miles Davis is a beloved artist… But not to the degree that a 17-year old would know who he is. Unfortunately, people don’t know the seeds. In my attempt to tell the story, I’m not trying to do some reverential all-of-us-bow-down-to-Miles-the-icon. I’m trying to present him as a man. I’m trying to make a movie that Miles Davis would want to make.”
All of that doesn’t tell us a heck of a lot about what the film will be like, other than it’ll likely be somewhat unorthodox, bold, and even irreverent – much like Miles himself was in the way he experimented and continuously pushed jazz musical boundaries.
But maybe adding to all of that is a Reuters piece, posted today, in which Cheadle dishes a little bit more on the project.
- That the script is done, and they are now shopping it around to get the money to make it.
- That they were exhaustive in their research, so we should expect “truth.”
- That, interestingly, Cheadle wants to bring in hip-hop artists to play with Miles Davis’ music, for the film, with the idea that somebody who hears Jay-Z’s version of a Miles Davis track, would then be inspired to listen to the original and learn more about Miles Davis.
- That Cheadle has plenty of artists in mind to play some sort of role in the film, stating, “When Miles left this Earth (in 1991), he was already working with Prince, Snoop Dogg understands the music … Miles always wanted to do what was happening now. If you said the word ‘jazz’ to him, he’d give you a smack — social music, that’s what it’s called.”
- And lastly that he promises a movie that’s “on the edge and feels a little bit dangerous… that’s brave, risky.”
“We’re trying to do what Miles Davis would have wanted us to do, which is approach it as artists with his life as the canvas… I think audiences are really sophisticated now and can understand that this is the kind of story that flips the biography on its head,” Cheadle said.
Of course, whether Hollywood will appreciate the idea of an atypical Miles Davis biopic enough to want to put money into it, is another story…
I’m definitely curious, given all I’ve heard and read about it thus far, and here’s hoping that someone with deep pockets bites, because I don’t know if this is a studio project. |

Don Cheadle has confirmed that he hopes to play Miles Davis in an upcoming biopic.
The Traitor actor told Parade that it would be a challenge to portray the life story of the Kind Of Blue jazz legend, who passed away in 1991.
Cheadle said: "It's been a long time coming, but we're working on the script right now. I think it will happen.
"I love Miles, but you have to take everything he says with a grain of salt. He would tell a long story, and someone would go, 'That's amazing. Did that happen?'. He'd reply, 'I don't f**king know. You figure it out'."
He added: "He wasn't interested in what you thought about him. He was like, 'I'm about the music. Deal with that'. Capturing the essence of that man is a challenge."
Gangsta rapper Snoop Dogg also recently expressed the desire to play Davis on the big screen. |

I am not a fan of Don Cheadle. I think it has something to do with the fact that he always looks like he is scared. I love Miles Davis, but I will probably pass on this movie because of Cheadle.

This movie will only be successful if the first one is Terrence Howard and Don Cheadle just takes over in the sequel.

Fuck Cheadle. I will only see this if Snoop Dogg is playing Davis. No one acts like Mr. D O double G.
