Apparently the RIAA legal staff is being headed by Dr. Evil:

Quote:
Record companies asked the courts for $75 trillion in damages (that is trillion, with a "T") in the Lime Wire copyright case. That's reasonable, right?

The record companies, which had demanded damages ranging from $400 billion to $75 trillion, had argued that Section 504(c)(1) of the Copyright Act provided for damages for each instance of infringement where two or more parties were liable. For a popular site like Lime Wire, which had thousands of users and millions of downloads, Wood held that the damage award would be staggering under this interpretation.

This points out 2 things:

1. The RIAA are batshit insane.
2. The DMCA needs to be completely rewritten.

I actually think this will hurt the RIAA. They may be doing it to close down Lime Wire, but what they are actually doing is saying:

1/3 of the worlds human wealth = licensed music from the last 50 years

This is idiocy, and morons may not have been able to see it in the past, but even they can't look past a group demanding $75,000,000,000,000 in damages.

I haven't given much a of a damn for the RIAA since they got a hold of Napster. It still feels like yesterday that I downloaded free music on that.

The time I tried to buy a laptop security cable from Best Buy last December. I used a rewards coupon I got from their website and it must have rolled the price into negative or something since I printed it at low quality. It actually happened twice in a row and I had to say no both times. In retrospect, I should have said yes just to see what would happen. My better thinking said it would very bad, but now I think it would have been very funny. At the very least, if anything happened, it would have gotten me on the news. The only thing that worries me is why $20 trillion dollar purchases are even possible on that system.

Seriously, its crazy their system even acknowledges that price.

If the RIAA sued the government for this much money, if the ENTIRE budget went to paying them it would still take like 20 years to pay this off. I think that's a good sign that it's an unreasonable amount.

Can the RIAA be sued by the government for wasting time and tax payers money?

I think everyone should sue everyone else until we all forget who owes what to who and just wipe the slate clean.

My best idea to fix the economy is just that: blow it all up and start over from scratch. Shows how much I know about economics.

Listen, the RIAA is due a great sum of money. $75 trillion is a laugher. Even if they won the case, there's no reason the people could ever, EVER get them that much. I would assume they just want to send that number out to scare any people (see: idiots) away from potentially doing this again.

Piracy is bullshit, whether you want to admit it or whether you like it or not (I don't mean this in a pushing manner, just as a musician myself, I understand why it's BS).. The RIAA does suck, but is owed. Not $75 trillion, though. If you make music, you deserve to be compensated.

It's just not socially relevant anymore, and the RIAA is cleaning up the mess. Using fecal matter.

That's exactly what should happen. When you're asking for this kind of money, then you should honestly be the ones that end up paying a large sum. When someone is sued, I believe that the sum total should be accounted for though actual statistics rather than BS "damage claims".

75 trillion isn't intimidating. Its silly, its practically a made-up number, and they would be better off asking for bison dollars.

Yeah, I'm pretty similar minded when it comes to video games, myself. I always found it bullshit when some jackoff downloads the latest video games in an emulator, rather than pay for them at the store. By that, I mean current generation video games.

To be fair, I haven't downloaded music in years, and I've grown much more appreciative for actually buying the product. It supports the industry and the people who work in it; these people spend a lot of time making the things that entertain us, from video games to music, and like you said, they deserve some compensation for it.

I don't think anyone here was saying "yay piracy!' just that the fact that they think they're a $5 trillion a year industry is hilarious.

Yeah, I'm not really about piracy, but this is just a ridiculous situation, and I think that in the long run, it really works against the RIAA because people see this and think, "Well, they're a bunch of choads, so I think I'm going to stick it to them and download a bunch of stuff."
