Saw this over the weekend, and while normally I don't like alien invasion films (Independence Day is one of my least favorite movies of all time), I was pleasantly surprised at how much I did like this movie. There was virtually no time wasted on romance, and there was a whole lot of violence. The aliens looked good and it wasn't campy. Aaron Eckhart was the best out of the bunch, hands down, but really, I don't think Ne-Yo and Michelle Rodriguez were going to beat him at acting. I'd give it a B+

I'm not a fan either, but she kept the whole 'brassy chick' bravado thing down a little bit in this one. I'd really like to see if she's capable of playing a sensitive character in contrast to the bad/tough woman roles she's had in the past. As for Ne-Yo, I hate his music, but at least he was okay as far as acting goes.

I heard from one guy that it was the equivalent of watching a guy play Call of Duty on a mod map.

I was really hoping to like this movie, specially after Skyline's letdown of an ending, but it seems I might have to wait for the DVD... AGAIN.

Why it seems hard to make a GOOD alien invasion movie as of late? Because it's impossible to shoehorn a happy ending if the aliens are hyper competent?

I don't think that it's a problem you'll necessarily have to deal with. The film doesn't end on a necessarily happy note, but it's hopeful, I guess you could say. I'm much the same way, frankly, and I think that any society that has the ability to traverse interstellar gulfs is probably going to whoop our milk and cookies, but they gave a decent justification of the weaknesses of the aliens.
