Some of the App Store's most talented developers think Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo should take Apple more seriously.
Walk through densely populated areas, and you'll spot the latest trend in gaming: smart phones and tablets, but not just in the hands of adults. The iPhone and iPad have become the new babysitters, easily distracting children with movies, music and a variety of Apps, leading us to wonder where all the DS and PSP systems have gone.
To be fair, you'll still see a bunch of traditional handhelds, mostly from Nintendo, but Apple's managed to disrupt the market with all in one devices, most notably the iPad and iPad 2, which play host to some of the world's most popular games. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo will need to adapt to the ever-changing market or face devastating consequences. |

personally, i say fuck that noise.
does apple & its app store have a nice market share? yes, they do. but the type of games they make vs the type of games that are made for the PSP/DS are way different.
its a different demographic imo, so its hard to compare. apples & oranges, basically.
thoughts?

Of course they think that. It would be pretty damn difficult getting their games published as handheld or console titles, as opposed to publishing an app.

Aside from Angry Birds, which is free, I can't even name a game that I would spend money on or that is popular.

Pbbt, yeah right! Like hell Apple will replace Nintendo and Sony in the handheld marketplace. As long as the latter two have their dedicated fans, Apple will never run Nintendo or Sony out of business in our lifetime.

The iPhone/iPad is the worst platform in terms of garbageware. If you want a platform specific slur, you can call it Rubware or Molestware. For every clever game or app, there are literally hundreds of terrible ones. Devkits must cheap and Apple must be completely indiscrimate, because there are tons of awful games/apps on the iPhone.
The iPhone also isn't going to make any devs rich. There are tons of free games on the iPhone. You can buy Rock Band on the iPhone if you really want, but you can play Tap Tap Revenge for free. You can also play free versions of nearly every classic arcade and card game ever. So there's no real need to buy games. You'll buy Angry Birds cuz it's famous, then you won't buy anything because there are plenty of mediocre free games you can play.
And Angry Birds ain't no Super Mario. If anything, it's Tetris.

Well, if I was going to compare Angry Birds to an old school game, it would have to be something simple, repetitive, and addictive. Tetris was the best thing I could think of. In terms of all games, Angry Birds mostly closely resembles a single player rip-off of Worms.

Before Angry Birds went big there was Crush the Castle on Armorgames.com
That's been around for years.

I think it is a silly argument to think that apple games will replace console games. What it will and has done is make a big impact on portable games.

Yea, pretty much my sentiments on the topic matter.
Also, Nintendo has too many loyal fans and world famous IPs to ever really be driven out of the market like that.

I'm with you guys and personally, I'm getting pretty sick of everyone cowtowing to Apple as if it's the last viable technology in the world. Why they insist on comparing a phone with the most successful handheld console of all time over and over again blows my mind and to say Sony and Microsoft need to look out and take notes makes me furious. As if mother fucking Angry Birds is single-handedly threatening the future of next-gen gaming. Look out Sony! You'd better make the PS4 capable of running simple Flash ports or you're DOOMED!
Can they really not tell the difference between a simple Flash game ripoff and a game like Final Fantasy XIII? It's all the same catagory to these people? Just because millions of people play Farmville on their lunch breaks doesn't mean those people ONLY play Farmville you fucks.

Long term, hand held consoles are going to be merged into phones. Or think of it the other way. Phones will be merged into hand held consoles. One day in the not so far off future, Nintendo will need to decide if it wants to make a cell phone.
The reason for this is because cell phones are now computers. There is no reason to carry two of them if one can do what you need it to.
Since Nintendo pushes the barrier of technological innovation with hardware, they need to be involved with that going forwards. That is why I think they will ultimately end up designing their own phone and OS.
My guess is that we will see this in 5-7 years.
As far as the platform being open for simple casual games, there is a market, but it isn't a competing one with Nintendo... yet. Angry Birds was a great idea, just like Snood was. Too bad the Snood guys didn't hold onto their game for a few more years.
Nintendo isn't going out of business, they are strong as hell, and so is Sony. However, they aren't dumb, and they know technology is changing and so are people's habits. Just don't expect to see unpolished crapware fly onto their systems. They are going to maintain a higher standard for games than the Apple Store/Google Marketplace.

How do you think I felt, begging my parents to buy me an Atomic Purple Game Boy Color, only to have them release the hugely improved Game Boy Advance what seemed like one month later?
Although, I think there was a gap there wherein they got all the suckers to buy the purple shit and then let the latecomers buy them in the cool colors.

Sony is too diverse to go out of business, Nintendo is too creative, and Microsoft is too smart.

Well, I got my Nintendo DSi on launch day, but it's going to soon be obsolete in the advent of the 3DS.
And I like the purple color, believe it or not. I don't have anything in that color, but I remember a friend or two having a Nintendo 64 controller of that color. It's so transparent.

If they didn't use a free game as their basis for argument it may have had some validity or if they used multiple non-free games instead of just Angry Birds. 1 Million people * $0.00 = $0; Not a very good business model.

What I find really strange is how all the industry guys and journalists drool all over the easy flash games on the iphone, while at the same time being vocal as hell about all the shovelware/flash game-adaptations on the Wii. Am I the only one who is wondering about this paradox?

What I'm wondering more about is why those journalists are playing apples vs. oranges when it comes to gaming. Like everyone else, I'm wondering why people are contrasting free download games to larger games with more work put into them.
I have actually imagined myself in a hypothetical situation where I'm playing a Nintendo DS and some people are walking by, laughing at me and telling me that I'm a loser for playing on my Nintendo DS rather than playing on an iPhone.

To be honest, I have an iPod and iPad, and both devices are getting more use from me than my DSi, however, most of the time I use my iPod or iPad, I am not playing games. I only have one game that really gets any playtime on my iPod/iPad, and that is BIT.TRIP Beat. Otherwise, I am listening to music on it, browsing the web on it or IRC chatting on it. My DSi, however, is used almost excusively for games.
Also, publishing App Store apps would be a stupid way for making income. Why? Because piracy is unbelievably simple to do on the iPhone. All you need is a jailbreakable firmware, and an app for installing these pirated apps.

Almost as stupid as publishing DS games, then.
