I know I've posted about this a few times before, but I guess this is sort of the "official" topic. A while back my copy of Fallout 3 got a circular scratch on it, but it fortunately didn't seem to ruin the game at the time. Well, today it finally died. The game freezes after about 5 minutes into the game. I heard that there's some place that will replace your games so I googled around a bit and found out that Microsoft has a list of about 12 games they will replace. Most of the other people with this problem didn't seem to have any other solutions so I'm asking here. The one thing I want to avoid is buying a new game or buying a used one and switching the discs. I don't have the money or the time. I guess if I was really desperate I would buy a scratch removal kit but I don't know which one to get. So does anyone know if Bethesda or Microsoft or someone can replace my game?

My brother has the same problem. His X-Box practically raped his copy of GTA 4. While I don't really care about the game, it kind of angers me that such an error could happen on such a wide scale.

I just want to know what I can do to fix it, preferably without spending any (or a lot) of money.

The exact same thing happened with GTA: IV for me. I got the disc refurbished at a local game store, and when I got it back a few days later, I was surprised to find that the big, circular scratch was COMPLETELY gone. The fact that it only set me back about two bucks was icing on the cake.

You're kidding me. Was it a mom and pop store or was it a franchise? My brother will love this news.

I don't know if it's a country-wide chain, but I got it refurbished at Slackers, a CD & game store; there are quite a few of them in the St. Louis area. I'm pretty sure that any place that refurbishes discs will do it, though.

Sounds good, I think I'll look into it for him. Kid worked for hours to earn the scratch to pay for it. I think he deserves to have it work properly.

Do Gamestop or EB Games refurbish discs? Those are really the only game stores I have around here (and I think the EB Games closed).

For those who live in the UK, Gamestation always seem to do the best job at refurbishing 360 game discs. My brother had a really scratched up copy of Tiger Woods 08 (this circular scratch thing that seems to happen to everybody I know). He got it refurbished at game, it still wouldn't work. Then I went to get it refurb'd at Gamestation. It worked first time.
Then this happened again with my (Japanese) copy of Senko No Ronde. Went to gamestation, got it refurb'd, and it worked perfectly first time. So unless we were lucky, Gamestation seems to be the best for refurbing 360 games in the UK.
Edit- @Mog- according to one of my friends, most Gamestop stores do refurbish discs. Because GS is a franchise, prices vary between stores.

Cool, thanks for all the input guys. I'll check at Gamestop next time I'm around there and see how much it costs. Otherwise I'm looking at some sort of scratch removal kit. Has anyone ever used one of these? This one seems ok but you never know, it could be some piece of crap ripoff. Link

That's the same type of repair kit a local independent games store uses. It does the job, eventually, and if you think your games are going to get scratched often, it's worth the investment. Personally, because I take good care of my games (my games only get scratched if the 360 decides it hates me, or if I lend them to an idiot), I don't see the point in one.

Doesn't look like it, here's the list
So I got my friend's Mom to try and fix Fallout (she works at a library). She was able to grind most of the scratch down but you can still sort of see it. I was able to install it to the HD but it still freezes on the loading screen (or just loads forever). So I guess I'll have to switch out the disc with a used one or something.

This is going to sound like a dumb question, but do you mean that you installed the entire game to the hard drive? How do you do that?

Like, how do you actually do it, or how did I manage it when there was still a scratch on the game?
Put the game in and hit Y to view the details. There'll be an option to install it to the HD.

Just popping in and saying ALL GameCrazy's will fix games. So should most GameXChanges.
One of the GameStops around home does too. You just have to ask. Sometimes they will ship them somewhere to get fixed for a few bucks. Or, as they did with a buddy, gave him a nonscratched one for free and they fixed the old one and sold it as a used disc.
So just go into a store and ask if they do. Couldn't hurt.

I dunno, but just at first thought and to add to the discussion, seems to me you might be able to stop this scratching of discs by laying the 360 on its side so that the disc is sitting the way a normal disc drive on a PC would. A similar problem happened to PS2 users back in the day when they were using their PS2s vertically.
