I admitted the game has flaws (camera and the like) but I just really don't think control was one of them. I know it is isn't a perfect game or anything like that, but it is a good one. Also, I understand what you are saying about the learning curve but it was fairly subtle for me as far as I recall.
I do think that Mario Galaxy perfected the design that SM64 laid out.
Oh, also the music in the game is awesome.

It's not a simple matter of a learning curve.
Gears of war had a learning curve. Devil may cry 3 had a learning curve. Super c had a learning curve. Mario 64 has a bunch of frustrating bullshit that you eventually learn to deal with in hopes of finishing the game.
A game should feel natural and challenge you with it's gameplay, not it's mechanics.

Are we still taking about Mario 64 and the N64's controller?
Well, I will admit that I don't really like Mario 64 that much, but if you even think about attacking the N64 Zeldas...

Meh. I don't care for those games either, but I'm tired of arguing about nintendo with a bunch of fanboys. Maybe later.

The only real difference between a "learning curve" and "frustrating bullshit" is the sake of argument.

Has anyone here played Sin & Punishment on Virtual Console? I can guarantee that any way you play it on that cannot match however it played with the controller it was designed for.

I played it with the Gamecube controller. It seemed fine. Definitely a tough game though.

I played it on the Classic Controller and only thought of why couldn't they have swapped the control sticks.

N64 games are meant to played with the Gamecube controller, I would say. While not 100% similar, it is the most similar in design.

Mario 64 is still a great game. It is naturally not as good as the Galaxy-games, as they build upon the foundation laid down in Mario 64, but it is still extremely good for its time, and still perfectly playable. As I said earlier, I first played it AFTER playing and beating Galaxy (and wanting more), so its not at all nostalgia talking. Sure the game has its flaws, but compared to contemporaries like Tomb Raider, the game controls like a dream. Also, it sounds like jew used a broken N64-controller when he played it
Now for the gamecube-controller, it would have been my favorite Nintendo controller if it had a better d-pad. The d-pad is just useless unfortunately, and the for some curious reason, the only other controller that is about as good as the gamecube-controller is the 360-controller which also has a terrible d-pad. Strange huh? So I guess that leaves the classic controller pro as my favorite controller, although I would love it if they changed the positions of the d-pad and left analog.

Yea, again, I suppose we just see things differently. I felt that exact way about Mario 64. It has it's challenges (some of the 100 coin challenges are pretty grueling) but they always feel like they naturally progress in difficulty.
I think what it boils down to is that you don't like Mario 64, which is fine, I on the other hand do. I will admit I am pretty much a Nintendo fanboy as I am quite fond of many of their franchises, but whatever, that doesn't make Mario 64 a /bad/ game, at least IMO.

There's nothing wrong with the Mario 64 gameplay. You do have to fight the camera at times, but that is a design issue, not a gameplay/mechanic one, and the programmers had the good sense to allow you to rotate the camera at will.
One of the cool things about Mario 64 is that some Stars are easier to get than they're intended to be, because you can abuse the game mechanics to do things the programmers didn't forsee.

Exactly, that's what I was saying.
Once you get real good with the game's controls, you can exploit really well timed aerials, wall-jumps and long jumps to pull off some pretty interesting shit.
Lot's of fun.

Yea, the 7th star for getting 100 coins on Tick-Tock-Clock was definitely the most grueling one in the game.

yeah that was a real pain since there are only 104 coins total in that stage

This is untrue. There are games that challenge you, and games that are incredibly difficult, but those games still make you want to play through them. They encourage you to get better at them. Like maximum carnage on the genesis.
Then you have games like dark void, Kane and lynch, dark sector, or army of two, where you're unable to enjoy the game because you're too busy fighting with things like the camera or controller or even glitches.

Fuck it. There's no winning with fanboys. I don't feel like quoting multiple posts to argue a useless point.
Mario is the best game ever. Long live nintendo.

lol calm down
i think what you pointed out is minimal to the overall experience. are those things annoying? are they gamebreakers? not in my opinion. they are to you. thats fair. i like the game, you think its crap. no biggie.
we just have to agree to disagree.

The game has a 95.95% ranking on GameRankings, and a 94/100 on Metacritic, so I don't think it's fair to say liking it makes you a fanboy. It was a popular game.

I know, you had to collect /every/ coin-box. And it was soo easy for them to fall off the edge into the abyss since the abyss was fucking everywhere.
Arrrgh.

It is not my favorite game, and actually one of my least favorite mario games, but it definitely a good game. It might not be for everyone, but neither is Half-Life or any other considered "great" game. Game design have come a long way since 1996, but in my opinion that just makes it more remarkable that Mario 64 still plays so well.

I don't remember having that much trouble with the clock level... maybe I was just patient.
Rainbow Ride was the one I hated. Damn you, scrolling level!

Rainbow Ride was equally vicious.
You had to travel so far in that level to get 100 coins, and it was very easy to fall off.
Half the times I would die would be the result of me just being fucking impatient with the slow-moving flying carpets, so I would long-jump from real far away to the ledge to shorten to the time, but it wouldn't always work.

i also hated getting the 8 red coins on... "over the rainbow" or whatever that stage was. the one you accessed by looking at the sunlight in the main lobby of the castle.
