I don't understand why this is even being discussed/argued about...It's a rule not to post NSFW content on the boards without proper tags. Don't do it! End of discussion.

Well then maybe you shouldn't be on a site known for it's vulgarity and raciness, regardless of forum section, at work if you're so worried.

And really, if that's NSFW to you, you have an extremely weak constitution.

It has nothing to do with what WE think is NSFW, it has to do with what 99% of employers think is NSFW.

And all I'm saying is that if you're worried that a website is going to get you canned, DON'T FUCKING GO TO IT AT WORK. Or, you could go anyway and tell your coworkers to go fuck themselves and get to work and stop looking at your monitor if that's your concern.

Edit: Fine, go fuck yourselves. Or is that NSFW? Maybe I'll put a tag on it...

Why the fuck are you so upset about this? The general discussion forum is the ONLY one that is required to be completely SFW; it's not a big deal. Also, the problem doesn't come from coworkers looking at your monitor, it comes from IT departments being told to scan image caches and browsing histories for inappropriate material.

I don't either. This thread was a reminder to follow the already existing rules, not an invitation to bitch about how you're incapable of going one forum post without being obscene.

Since this thread has been summed up, I have a question unrelated to its original content.

Dr. Jeebus wrote:

Who does this? What company does this? I have worked in IT for two large corporations and two universities. The universities absolutely do not do this, and the corporations never mentioned anything about it to us.

I am unfamiliar with any enterprise software that would automate this process, so I imagine that it would have to be done via searches across hard disk files. I have never seen a company actively investigate content on all computers.

I have seen people who are in trouble have their computers searched, but only one got in trouble and that guy got caught with child porn and went to jail. I have found repositories of porn on multiple servers and people's computers by accident when troubleshooting. I have reported it and the answer is always the same, delete it and ignore it.

What I have seen is proxy filtering to block certain websites. Restricted internet access is very popular.

So ultimately my question remains, who does this cache searching, and what tools do they use?

Ask Spanky if he ever comes on here. I know State Street did this, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was done manually.

He formally announced his departure.

If you don't mind, I am actually interested in this. If you happen to find out more, please drop me a PM or reply here. I'd like to know what companies are actually doing.

My employer uses these and sites are tagged as game sites or entertainment, how do these effectively work? Do they use tags from the site to judge, because if so I hope Syd never changes his tags. It seems like any and all sites I try to have fun at are blocked. Even new and obscure ones. I'm actually quite surprised that this site is not blocked. All other forums are considered social networking or something stupid. I also can't see most people's avatars. The Man is trying to keep me down!

Most of them use a blacklist. They receive a list of sites maintained by a 3rd party company as "distractions/abusive to work culture" and they just block them.

Some of them use white lists... these are the worst because you lose the internet and really only gain what they want you to see.

Finally, there are some that use the above options in conjunction with dirty words. If the site has a specific word in the URL, it is blocked.

Blacklist/Whitelist are generated by people or computers and the companies that build them offer tools to the people who use them so that they can poke holes and open up sites that are important.

There are 4 (lol 5) ways around these crappy technical solutions to political problems.

1. Become friends with the IT guy
2. Use a proxy
3. Use Remote Desktop
4. Use a cellular device such as a tablet computer or phone

(5. Hack the shit out of the proxy they are using... don't do this. It would end badly...)

#2 or #3 will most likely violate your agreement with your workplace, so you might want to think very hard about choosing to use them. #4 is a safe bet.

It typically scans metatags, URL, Source code etc.. our system that i run here is called fortigate(fortinet) if you would like to look deeper into it. its a standalone system that you route your traffic through from the switch or router, however your network wants it setup. our system also allows users to "submit a page for review" if they think it shouldnt be blocked. there have been instances where i have been on the network and tried to go to a page that had nothing to do with porn or games and it would come up as porn or games. but luckily i have my verizon card so i run off the network Smile

SOPHOS is another one we have. but it doesnt get used.

I remember when I did some searches from a public library pc some years ago in Swedish and Finnish (our official languges). Some of the site were blocked based on dirty words, I assume. As I found out, I obiviously started to play & experiment with it. My favorite was probably "slut" (that means "end" in Swedish). A good example why blacklist of dirty words doesn't work in every given situation.

Ok heres my deal.

I CAN. I repeat CAN surf the internet at work, and look at anything that the average person wouldn't flip shit about during working hours. Why? Because my fucking station is open 24hrs. Do we have Flights in the air 24hrs? NO. So that can leave sometimes 2-3 days of literally someone being there to ANSWER A PHONE.

I'm more than allowed to look at websites during work time. I'm not allowed to look at risque pictures of half-nude/censored photos of nude women.

Gore? Dunno, But I bet it would raise some eyebrows and would probably get my ass chewed.

The fucking rules even state. and I quote...
Quote:
5. Thou shalt not post offensive images to this forum. Any image containing sex, bodily waste, graphic violence, or graphic nudity shall be deemed offensive. Disturbing medical photos are also not permitted.

This shouldn't even be a question. Just because a chick has quarters over her nipples still makes it sex related.

I can usually guess from a threads title if it's a bad idea for me to dable into it. But when someone randomly drops a picture of 3 midgets covered in thousand island dressing banging a goat while taking the Lord's Name in vain BUT there is censor bar over it, I can get seriously fucked.

Please don't be an asshole just to be one. There are two NSFW Groups I stay far away from while I'm checking this site from work.

Fun fact: Sydlexia.com is considered a weapon's site, and thus is blocked in my university's crappy free net computers. Why? I can only assume someone thinks "Lethal Weapon 2" and "Guns n' Roses" are real weapons and guns -_-
Those are metatags for this site BTW Razz

Ima touch more on the IT side of this thread.

As far as blocking sites goes my school uses a filter that blocks all image sites, and personal websites.

Hell if I try to get on the haddox portion of this site it blocks it.

...That's why I use a VPN to get past the proxy whilst at school, and I can get away with it because it's my laptop I surf on.

...Also porn in the general forum is bad, I've been in situations where I've had to scroll down /really/ fast because of pictures in this forum.

You bring up a good point. A VPN is actually more preferable to a proxy. The reason I didn't bring it up was because I assumed he was using a machine that was not owned by him. VPN software uses a virtualized hardware device to make a connection and therefore usually requires administrative access to setup and configure. Additionally a VPN connection on a work machine would remain installed and a trail of evidence proving who used it via logs and installed program. Proxy settings don't tend to leave breadcrumbs the same way. Of course, the VPN session is encrypted, so that is a huge bonus to security.

I still say if you can use a secure VNC or RDP session that is the best option since everything that occurs exists only on the remote computer.
