Im not too big into Nintendo but Ive always enjoyed the games they come out with, id rather play a game like Donkey Kong over Call of Duty (which is starting to get a little redundant now) and to me they always seem to find innovative ways to stay in the market.
I dont think Nintendo is or ever will be doomed, short of the apocalypse

Yeah, I agree.

The only thing that any reasonable gamer would have against Nintendo in the current generation is that they clearly aimed the wii at casual gamers, girls, and families who watch their dollars. Basically, I bet this guy is pissed because the Wii doesn't have many games that hardcore gamers can seriously latch onto like COD: Black Ops and the ilk.
But, Nintendo is in the business to make money - so fuck that guy. I'm not a Wii-tard like some people, but I'm not stupid and seriously respect Nintendo. Now, will they have to reinvent themselves in the future? I would assume so. But, for now and for the reasonable future, Nintendo can afford itself. This isn't 1984.

I get what you're saying, but Black Ops isn't a hardcore gamer's game. At least, not to me. There isn't really a satisfactory definition of the term "hardcore gamer" out there, but here's how I see it.
First, you have casual gamers. They don't buy many games, and don't spend that much time playing them.
Then, you have social gamers. They also don't buy many games, but they spend a lot of time playing the few games they do play. These are the people who play nothing but WOW, or who buy the newest Call of Duty or Madden and spend 4-8 months playing nothing but them.
Then you have status gamers. Status gamers buy every hot new system and game just to say they have them. Many of the games they buy may never see play.
Then you have hardcore gamers. Hardcore gamers buy a multitude of games from different genres and play them to completion.

I more or less agree with Syd, especially in his point that Cod and Madden is not really hardcore games. If you know a guy who owns a PS3 or a 360 and he only has two-three games (something which should imply that he is not really hardcore), he will more or less always have a version of Cod and Madden/Fifa (depending on the continent), but people like us who write on these forums might have 50+ games for the current generation, but no sports games, no Cod's, but a lot of Nintendo-games, rpg's, adventure-games and so on. I would actually say that a game like New Super Mario Bros is more hardcore than cod, but I guess it is more of a bridge-title. However, games like Mario Galaxy are definitely hardcore games, so is Zelda-games and Metroid-games, so I don't agree at all that Nintendo is aimed only at the casuals.
I think they have a pretty fine balance between casual and hardcore content, what they do miss however, is content to what Syd call "status gamers", they don't have the big names like GTA or Gran Turismo that teenagers wet their pants over. The also miss a lot of the better third-party content, which might be catered to both hardcore, casual or anything in between. However, a true hardcore gamer will know that the Wii actually have a great library of games, and might even say that the plattform has more interesting titles than that of the PS360 (I, for one, would definitely say so).

Hey Syd, where would you group the types like Farmville and Mafia Wars?
Also, I must admit the last time I turned on my Wii was to play some Kid Icarus and watch some anime on Netflix.
When I can eventually get a 360, it won't be for FPSes or Football (American or non-Gridiron) but for RPGs (Mass Effect, Dragon Age, FF XIII [I'd like to play it and judge for myself; I do love XII and that was less than well-received) and some fighters like MvC3 and SSF4.

I consider myself a hardcore gamer because I play games that few people in the four above groups have heard of. That, and I scoff at anyone who doesn't play Tetris at lightning speed.

Farmville and Mafia Wars, huh? I don't know, soccer mom gamers, I guess? People who are so clueless when it comes to gaming that the only things they play are free online games and the stuff that comes loaded on Windows.
I originally bought my 360 to play fighting games, and a significant portion of the games I own for it are still fighting games. Out of 27 XBox 260 games I currently own, 11 are fighting games. An additional 6 are shmups.

Not to defend it, but if over 10 million people play such games, it must have some redeeming factor to it right?

The redeeming factor is that it's there and you don't need to actively play it for more than 5 minutes at a time. Oh, you watered your crops, found a cow, got your friend to send you the Fancy Painting, and completed the Kill Some Guy mission. Now you can ignore it for the next couple hours.

In all seriousness, though Syd's definition of "hardcore" does make sense, that's not what people refer to as hardcore gamers. They are referring to this guy:

There are a lot of what if's in life Donny. What if I hit you really hard in the face, knocked yo shit to the back of yo skull? What if I....had you girl gargle my nuts? The fact remains, you are a fuckin mutant. |
