Randomly stumbled upon this the other day and thought it was something worth sharing with you guys. It's a Mario fan game that just so happens to contain a rather powerful and very easy to use level editor. Sort of like a toy box full of Mario related goodness that you just get to put together... I've certainly been having fun with it so far.

It couldn't really be called a mod, but if you had the time, you could make an entire game.
Also, I did get this game a month or two before this thread was made, and have been having fun with the pack in worlds and the DLC worlds.

I wonder how long it will be before this gets canned.
Anyway, if you like this, you might also like Zelda Classic, a Zelda 1 fangame with huge extensibility. Be warned that Google and Firefox have flagged the official site as infected with malware, so here's the developer's forum just to be safe.

In the level editor how do I get the screen to scroll one direction, currently I can just play blocks and test in one tiny little area and it won't let me create the level outside the little starting area.

Like Mr. Satire, I've been playing this game myself for about a month or so now. I was gonna make a post about it actually, but I've been so busy with shit that I just forgot to do so.
This game practically combines all the good stuff from all the classic Mario games: all the colored yoshis (plus a few new ones), the green shoe as well as a lava shoe and flying shoe, the ability to even play as Link, 2-player co-op with seamless, Toejam-&-Earl-style split screen... There's even a few cameo appearances like Mr. Saturn from Earthbound.
To those who may want to play with a controller, there's a program you can use called Xpadder that allows you to emulate key presses into the controller's buttons. If anyone needs some assistance with that, lemme know and I'll help you set it up.
BTW, there's also some cheat codes for this game if anyone wants to try them out. These can just be typed into the keyboard to activate (type again to deactivate). A couple of things to keep in mind is that once you activate a code, saving is disabled (unless you type in a certain code, wink wink) and all reserve box codes only apply to Mario and Luigi since they're the only characters in the game that have reserve item boxes. Anyway, here's the whole list:

Seriously bro? You click the link that says "SMBX WIKI!" and then immediately on the right is a big fucking link that says "HowTo:Auto-Scoll: a guide to using the auto-scroll feature. ".
