a nice little collection of articles about the DS
Quote:
Nintendo's DS has been a stalwart little system these past six-plus years, surprising just about everyone with its tremendous success. The DS's life is at its end, though, as its successor -- the 3D-capable 3DS -- completes its global launch at the end of this month. Publishers will still be producing DS games for the foreseeable future, of course, but by and large the games that you, the readers of 1UP, care about... well, they're over and done with.
That makes now the perfect time to revisit the DS library. Before all the best games evaporate into the marketplace, before the bootleggers completely destroy the secondary market with inferior knock-off products, before you the game-loving DS owner are filled with regret over the cult favorites you overlooked. All the above happened with Game Boy Advance, and they're going to happen again to the DS. This selection of articles is your wake-up call, your last chance to catch up to the DS before everything except the awful shovelware is pushed off the shelves by 3DS. |

I'll be playing DS for years. It has a huge library of games that deserve to be played.
Just made it to Joshua -chapter in The World Ends With You. One of the most solid and innovative j-rpg's I've ever played.

At first I didn't think I'd like the DS due to how gimmicky I thought it was going to be, but then I got Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow and The World Ends with You. Castlevania DS showed me that the touch screen didn't need a big role on a DS game while TWEWY showed me just how awesome touch controls could be.

I echo both of the previous posts. I didn't think I'd like the DS, but I was blown away by it and still play it daily after 3 years. Best handheld and possibly the best video games apparatus ever made in my opinion.

Did they seriously include Feel The Magic on their Top 25 list? The crappy launch title? I still need to pick up all the Phoenix Wright/Professor Layton games...
Their "unfit for America" list was missing Jump Super Stars and/or Jump Ultimate Stars, both of which are fantastic. Jump Super Stars, released in August 2005, was the first title that really got coverage as something you could/should import due to the region-free nature of the DS.

I still don't like the damn touch screen. All of the games that I enjoyed on the console barely used it.
If anything, the sonics, castlevanias, megamans, and whatnot were the best.

Also, it is bad that I've never even HEARD of their #1 game?
Bangai-O spirits? WTF is that? What makes it good? I see a giant mech on the box, and I'm immediately disinterested. Truth time: Syd is not a fan of giant mechs.

Yeah, I'll never understand Americans obsession with Japans obsession over giant mechs.

I have Bangai-O Spirits and I can tell you right now, it is an underrated game.
Basically, it's concentrated bullet hell in which your mission is to blow shit up. Doesn't bother with story, just blow shit up; want a story? Go play the tutorial. Oh, and the giant mech you're piloting? A measly speck in the screen. Why? Because there's so much shit blowing up it will slow down your game. Why you want so much shit blowing up that will slow the game down? Because fuck you that's why.
Oh yeah, and you can make your own stages and share them via sound.
Hardoce Gaming 101 does a good job covering everything Bangai-O.

that top 25 list is in alphabetical order for the most part, except for # 23 i believe. and its an op-ed piece by jeremy parish.
Quote:
In 25 23 days, Nintendo launches its 3DS handheld system in Japan, to be followed a month later by the European and American versions. While the arrival of 3DS doesn't mean its predecessor is completely dead, we're definitely moving into the DS's latter days. That makes now the perfect occasion to catch on up all the DS games you've missed. In the days leading up to 3DS's Japanese debut, I'll be looking back at the best the DS had to offer -- my favorite games for one of my favorite system ever, and some others that I may not be totally enamored with but can respect for their general importance. This isn't a definitive list or anything. It's an op-ed column! Please feel free to voice your dissent in the comments.

from the article itself:
Quote:
What makes Spirits so unusual is that it lacks any sense of structure or progression: it offers up more than 100 levels that can be selected in any order and played with any combination of powers. Each stage is small and, once you figure out its specific trick, can often be completed in mere seconds. The challenge, however, lay in figuring out those tricks. Each level is a puzzle to be unraveled, a challenge for you to deduce which weapons work best for a given scenario and how you should approach the situation. I've spent more than an hour trying to crack some of the game's levels, and it's not because I'm stupid (I hope); Treasure's games simply demand a high level of player mastery
thats what got me interested in that game

So with the 3DS coming out, that means I ought to be able to get a used DS pretty cheap right? My brother has a DSi and tells me that with a card I can run emulators on it, so that's definitely got me interested.

yeah. you its easier w/an older DS or DS lite since there are no firmware updates for it. mine busted a while ago, but gamestop sells used ones for about $100 or so. ill probably end up buying a used one in the next month or so.
the cards are cheap too. only $35 or so, and you have to buy a microSD card to install w/in the card itself. the NWO has more on that.

Theres a bunch of games on there that I'm now interested in playing, as well as some endorsements for games that I will now consider worth the risk. Bangai O Spirits, Mystery Dungeon:Shiren the Wanderer, and TWEWY are the new options for me.
I personally recommend Retro Game Challenge and Etrian Oddysey III. I've never heard of Bangai O Spirits, but the game was made by Treasure, who did amongst other things Ikaruga and Gunstar Heroes so its probably incredibly difficult bullet hell goodness finetuned to perfection.

The top 25 piece is missing some WAY more awesome titles than were included, Like Wario Ware. Touched, my first DS game that I got a little after the launch, that game is fucking gold. Tetris DS, N+, Advance Wars Dual Strike, Glory Days 2, Lunar Knights, Puzzle Quest! Why is shiren the wanderer on there? That game was a super bitch... although I did love how hard it was. Brain Age can also leave the list.
.... I thought Scurge Hive was for the GBA?

WarioWare sucks. Not only is it a bunch of ADD bullshit, but it ruined the Wario character.
I love Tetris DS a lot, but it was quickly and quietly put out of print for reasons no one seems to know. I've heard Tetris snobs complain that it's not Tetris-y enough, but I forget why. Something about the controls when the game gets really fast.
999 should have made the list.

Wario: Master of Disguise
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
Puyo Pop Fever
The Bleach Fighting Games
and Sonic Rush should all be on this list.

Wario: Master of Disguise was okay. The Wii game was better.
Sonic Rush was super fun.
Portait of Ruin is exempt because Dawn of Sorrow made the list. And Dawn of Sorrow really needed to. PoR is probably the better game, but DoS had a much bigger impact.

I always kinda had trouble with the hand-held Sonic games. They were fun, but because of the screen and speed of the game, I would always find myself running into shit.

That's just how Sonic is. It's brute memorization. You keep running until you hit something or fall into a pit. Or both. Then you try again and remember to jump at that one part.
