I never really thought about the future. When I was 8, I'd figured we'd be playing NES forever. And to be fair, we still are. But I mean, when they announced the SUPER Nintendo, that was some crazy shit. That blew my mind. And then fucking Sonic CD? That shit was unreal. But games like original Starfox just didn't do it for me. I don't know. Neither did Virtua Fighter. I remember when the local arcade first got Virtua Fighter. It cost $1 to play, because it was OMG 3D. So I put a dollar in, and I was dead in like 40 seconds. I was so pissed. Maybe that's why I hate firstgen 3D so much. Because at a time when a dollar was a lot of money to me, I lost a dollar to firstgen 3D. I could have played TWO normal games with that dollar, but NOOOOO, I had to try the "cool" new 3D game. Well it wasn't cool. FUCK YOU SEGA.
I did like Soul Edge though. It was the first fighting game that I was pretty good at.

You are not alone. The PSone soul edge is the first game fighting game that I played extensively and got good with three characters, Lei Long, Mitsurgi and Taki.

It's the same thing with you liking 8bit graphics.
You grew up with it and thats why it just don't seem wrong to you. Thats how people work. |
Well, you have to understand, through my childhood, we saw a steady increase in 2D graphic quality. Then, all of the sudden, companies started doing 3D, and it was a huge step backwards in graphic quality in order to push hardware ahead. 3D also came at a time when expensive poorly supported consoles and peripherals like the 3DO, CDi, Sega CD, Jaguar, and yes, the PSX were being pushed out. There wasn't a lot of hope for the video game industry during those years. Then the Saturn came out and people got excited for a little bit, the N64 came out and people got excited for a little bit, and then the PSX finally found a market. |
Explaining your point of view that well makes me understand why you dislike early 3d and i have to admit that looking at it is not a feast for the eye.

It looks like a completely different game, but I'd still pick it up. My cousin had a BAT game on Saturn that I enjoyed. Also, add Earthworm Jim. He makes every fighting game better, (See: Clayfighter 63 1/3)

Game of the Year right there. Right next to Dudebro 2: MSIFUSIHTS/SY and The Room: the Game.

I still gotta download that Les Miserables fighting game.
How reviewable do you think it would be for someone who never read the book, but watched the anime adaption?

I've seen that movie with Liam Neeson. Is he represented in any way?

At the time I really hated the early 3d-games, and though they looked horrible. Starfox, Virtua Fighter, Tekken. I never understood the appeal of them, and thought PSX and N64 games generally looked like shit. However, the last few years I have had an increasing interest for this particular part of gaming history, and I can now appreciate what the games tried to do much more. And I am surprising myself by finding a lot of the early 3d-games on the PSX that I found unplayable back in the day, to actually control decent and look good or at least charming. Guess age works opposite for a retro-nut like me compared to the normal dudebro-crowd.

I never got around to playing this, what kind of game was it? It was something more than a fighting game was it not?

It was a samurai themed fighting game for the psone. It played more like an realistic swordfight. You died in 2 or 3 hits and there were also alot of 1hit kills.
The fighting system got copied a couple of times, like in Tengo (PS2) or Sword of the Samurai (PS2).
If you are interested try Sword of the Samurai wich has also a Story Mode and RPG elements in it.
i played it alot.
