yeah that might be it. the copy protection actually conflicted with a small amount of legit retail games.

I think it had something to do with this:

Quote:
the Sega Genesis III incorporated a technical protection mechanism intended to facilitate trademark suits against companies producing pirate Genesis games. When a game cartridge was inserted, the console would check for the presence of the string "SEGA" at a particular point in the memory contained in the cartridge. If the string was present, the console would display the message: "PRODUCED BY OR UNDER LICENSE FROM SEGA ENTERPRISES LTD." If not, the game wouldn't run.

Accolade, a video game developer, was a legal but unlicensed third-party vendor of Genesis-compatible games.

Maybe Accolade games wouldn't run? Apparently afterwards they reverse engineered licensed games and started using the code in their games to make them run, even though they weren't licensed themselves and there was some court bullshit.

If the story I heard is correct, Accolade games -did- run, and that was the problem. When reverse-engineering the Genesis, they found the code for the lockout, but it didn't match up to anything. So they included it in their games anyways. So the copyright screen popped up, and Sega sued them for the false representation of the copyright.

Sega won in court at first, but eventually, the appeals court ruled that not only was Accolade not in the wrong, but Sega was actually the one at fault for putting a copyright screen on something that wasn't theirs.

What the hell is a Sega Genesis?

It's what the people call the Sega Mega Drive in North America. It became named that there because "Mega Drive" was apparently taken by something else in North America.

The Sega Genesis 1 is the best looking of all the Genesis, but I noticed more of these die than any of them.

The Sega Genesis 2 is the most common and probably the best, yet I had issues with mine due mainly to fact that I played it way too much and it eventually died Sad

The Sega Genesis 3 was the last model and feels extremely cheap, but still good if ur not planning on using a SegaCD/32X.

The Genesis 1 had a better soundchip, believe it or not. Also, it had external stereo sound due to the speaker/headphone jack that it had for some reason, as opposed to needing the special A/V cables to do it with the later consoles.

Well, after some consideration, I decided to necromance this thread to tell you that I finally decided to buy a replacement. Luckily, however, it came with a working Sega CD, which I never had as a kid.

Now, if only I can get a hold of a 32X. . .

Make sure you bury it with all of its parts. It is against the Sega religion to donate components. It fucks with the afterlife.

Well, I'm going to keep my old Sega Genesis handy in the vain hope that it can one day be fixed. In the meantime, however, I'll be playing more Sonic CD. I'll be needing one of those RAM carts, if I can ever find one, though.
