Battle Arena Toshinden was a very early PSX game. It wasn't very good by today's standards, but for it's time it was awesome. It had a lot of sequels, and they all got progressively stupider and stupider. It's definitely a game that would be amazing with a reboot.

So why would you make a reboot like this?

The Toshinden license has been sold like three times since the creation of the first game.

The only noticeable difference I see from skipping around through both of the videos is that the new one has the deals where it zooms in on the character when they do their special, kind've like MvC and it's all anime styled.

They both look like loads of garbage.

i don't think it looks that bad. as you mentioned toshinden has never been the reinvention of the wheel.
so the wii version looks legit.
But i understand that the original Toshinden roster may seem more appealing then the new one, for whatever reason.

Was Earthworm jim included in the PSX toshinden? I can't remember having him playable.

The original game reminds me of Soul Blade (aka Soul Edge aka that game that came before Soul Calibur). Which is fine, because Soul Blade was good times back in the day. It was the first PSX game I ever played. I played it at one of those crappy internet/gaming cafes that popped up in a bunch of malls in the mid-90s and then disappeared pretty quickly. It astounds me that people in like fucking Korea and shit still have internet cafes. Get your own computer, jerks.

EDIT: Just looked it up, and apparently BAT was the first 3D fighting game to feature characters with weapons, and Soul Edge was the second.

No, he was a PC exclusive.

In all honesty, I love every single one of the Playstation launch titles. Gotta love those awkward early 3D graphics and gameplay.

You guys are crazy. 8-bit sprites and higher are pretty. 3D games designed for Dreamcast and higher are pretty. Everything else is rather hideous. Out of all the video games ever made, early 3D games have aged the worst. Well, maybe Tiger/Konami LCD games have aged worse. MAYBE.

Yeah, we know that they're hideous and horrid by today's standards. I think it speaks rather highly of them that we still can enjoy them based on sheer nostalgia force.

Or we just like horrible games. It's like enjoying B-movies, I think.

It's the same thing with you liking 8bit graphics.
You grew up with it and thats why it just don't seem wrong to you. Thats how people work.

Anyone that isn't an eight year old can appreciate Toshinden. That shit is nostalgia. There was nothing like it at it's time. The problem with the series is that instead of growing like Tekken and Soul Calibur did, it kept reinventing itself in weird ways.

Personally I hated Judgement, and It's probably for the same reasons that I hate this. You can't take beloved characters who have been around forever, redesign them to fit some sort of current anime cliche art style, and toss them into some sort of weirdo power stone knockoff wiimote jerking gameplay.

Well, you have to understand, through my childhood, we saw a steady increase in 2D graphic quality. Then, all of the sudden, companies started doing 3D, and it was a huge step backwards in graphic quality in order to push hardware ahead. 3D also came at a time when expensive poorly supported consoles and peripherals like the 3DO, CDi, Sega CD, Jaguar, and yes, the PSX were being pushed out. There wasn't a lot of hope for the video game industry during those years. Then the Saturn came out and people got excited for a little bit, the N64 came out and people got excited for a little bit, and then the PSX finally found a market.

Enh. I disagree. NES games have visually aged better than N64 games.

I would say 16 bit has aged the best visually especially the super nintendo, the genesis has some great looking games too that still look good today

It depends on what 8 bit games you are talking about, Meganman games still look pretty fucking sweet. The Legend Of Kage however, always looked like shit, even in the 80s.

There are some amazing things that can be done with sprites, even today:

The thing about the early era polygon games is that it had never been done before. It was mind blowing just to see it happen, even if it didn't hold the test of time. Kinda like watching an old movie with CGI.

I wasn't really impressed with with early 3D. The first time I played Soul Edge and Virtua Fighter in arcades, it wasn't: "Oh man, this looks awesome." It was: "Fuck, there's a line for Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. Let's try this game that no one else is touching."

That being said, I own and love the Wii port of Gunblade NY/LA Machineguns. And those were about as craptastic as 3D graphics get.

It's funny how different we are when it comes to games, considering we are almost the same age.

I was impressed with the fact that it was in a full 3d plane, with a rotating camera. I acknowledged the fact that the characters looked like oragami, but was full of hope for the future.
