This Reddit conversation points out an article on Wikipedia about pixel scaling algorithms.

I know that there are a few people here that do either art work with sprites and or enjoy games such as Minecraft.

The information is interesting, even if it is extremely geeky.

I have never seen pixel scaling used properly. That or I only ever notice when it's used where it shouldn't.
