Wow, just wow.
Sounds like a horrible place to work
I feel sorry for some of their employees.
Also
That's what you get for dealing with an over proprietary system.
Sorry I just had to

It isn't a horrible place to work. The pay is reasonable, the references for future jobs are good, and the environment is clean. Also, if you go to work at the Apple Store, what the fuck do you expect?
Want some advice? Go to college, get a degree in something that will help you with a career (not philosophy), get some internships while you do that (at a real corporation). Skip the bullshit retail chain jobs.
I'm not suggesting it is bad to work retail, but if you don't like how stores treat their employees, don't put yourself into that scenario.

I worked in retail for almost 10 years before I finally got my foot in the door to the IT world. I figured it was better than pumping gas or flipping burgers.
After awhile though, working in retail, you really start to despise and hate humanity as a whole based on interacting with people as customers.

I intern at a computer repair store that repairs and sells computers, does that count as retail?

Ive worked at a gas station. One that serviced a crowd primarily composed of trailer trash and travelers from Texas. I didn't get lunch hours or breaks so I stood for eight hours, and had to clean the bathrooms every night while not leaving the register alone long enough for it to get robbed.
I'm overflowing with sympathy for app boy.

Well maybe people wouldn't treat them like shit if the staff actually did their job.
I went in once to buy covers for my ipod and the "hipster-i-am-so-cool-because-i-use-apple-products" cashier just ignored me. I actually stood there staring at him and he continued using the computer. If he was busy i would understand but he was the only fucking cashier and he could have at least said "oh sorry i'm busy" or got someone else to serve me.
Fucking apple.

I know gas station workers probably don't have unions, but jesus...there's no law mandating breaks? (No, I guess there isn't, is there? Minimum wage is pretty much it.)

Usually there's only one employee on at a time at a convenient store or gas station, so they can't take a break.

You think thats bad? Line Cooks rarely get breaks, if its a saturday and its busy, yeah no break and your shift is from morning until its slow, 12 - 14 hours some days... and if you get sick, dont think of calling in, unless your dead, youre working.
|
Let's assume it's a mixture of the two!

but there are occassions where it slows down a bit and you can just relax. or if there are two people working, one can break while the other works and vice versa.

Here's some in my opinion better advice: learn a trade, be some moron's bitch doing grunt work for a few years while you learn, and go into business for yourself. Much better.
How many people are coming out of college with degrees and absolutely NO job prospects? Hell, I know women who are graduating from a 4 year RN program and there aren't any jobs to be found. Fucking NURSES can't find work!
College is only worth it if you are going to be a doctor, a lawyer, an engineer, or a professor. Everything else is going to rapidly become useless and if you really want that knowledge, you can learn it on your own for free.

By law you're owed 15 minutes paid every 4 minutes you work and 30 minutes unpaid every 6 hours. However, there's an exception for jobs where there is enough expected downtime and where you work alone - you can effectively take a break "on the clock".

Every company I've ever worked for has asked to me to sign a waiver forfeiting my right to an unpaid 30 minute lunch on a 6 hour shift, with the agreement that I'll get two fully paid 15 minute breaks for any shift of 7 hours or more and then 2 fully paid 15 minute breaks and an unpaid lunch for any shift of 8 hours or more.

I think that's allowed, actually. But you need to consent to it, and they really can't push it much more than that (2 paid breaks and 1 unpaid lunch for an 8 hour shift is the standard in law, actually). I'm not sure if they can make it a condition of employment or not.
I've learned a lot of companies do things that aren't legal but get away with it because nobody complains.

Don't let people handling food call in sick. I love that one. |
My first job was at a restaurant. At the time of this incident, I was working the "show grill" which was basically a line job in front of the customers. I usually don't get sick but this morning I was sweating, my stomach was feeling horrible, my head was throbbing, and overall, I just ached.
About an hour into the shift, I told my manager he needed to call someone in, I needed to leave ASAP as I was feeling very sick (keep in mind I never called in sick and took all the extra shifts I could). He said he would get right on calling someone. Another hour, I ask him if someone is coming in. Oh yeah, he says, I'll get to the phone to call someone. Another hour, I ask him if someone is coming, sure, the guy taking over for you will come in an hour early. I tell him no, I need to go home sooner. He says he will see what he can do. By this point, the waitresses start noticing I look like shit and ask why I haven't left yet.
A few minutes later, my stomach starts feeling worse and I get light headed, working in front of the grill hasn't helped things at all. I decide that I should stand in front of a trash can just in case. I then walk to the back near the dish washing area, stand in front of a trash can, a few seconds later I let up about half the contents of my stomach.
I tell a waitress to get the manager. I ask him if I can go now, he says someone will be coming soon. I tell him to look in the trashcan. Low and behold, I'm free to go.
Working in the food industry and I was allowed to keep cooking and serving people as I am sick and getting worse. Dumb fuck.

Yeah, this is something you need to consent to, and they can't make it a condition of employment. But they can punish you with crappy shifts if you refuse to comply. Or if you're part time, they can simply not give you hours.
You want a 30 minute lunch break for 6 hours? Okay, you're only getting 5 hour shifts then.

I think every profession is squeezed at the moment, but you're right. My father is the charge nurse/head manager of the trauma floor at UCDavis Medical Center in Sacramento (one of the main hospitals in the region) and he recently told me that they had two nursing positions open up recently, but he had to choose from over 250 applicants. Pretty nuts.
Learning a trade is great advice too, and definitely the route I'm going. Tradesmen may be looked down upon in society, but they make a pretty damn good living and they're always in demand.

Who looks down upon them? Nobody's looking down at me when they have to call me to come fix their broken shit, simple shit that any man should know how to do at that. Then I drop some Socratic quotes or bust out my excessive vocabulary(that I don't really dip into normally) into the conversation so that they realize I'm not a retard on top of it, and they start feeling quite small. I try to learn everything I can, that includes both the white and blue collar worlds.
