I get this terrible feeling it's going to be a bad game. I don't want to feel this way, but I just know they're going to butcher it somehow.

Play-Asia carries all regions, even North America. I've noticed this by browsing the sale pages.
How do you plan to play this game? |
I didn't know that. Also, last I checked, DS units were region-free.

Yeah... they are. I didn't see that it was going to be on the DS. Subject line perhaps needs an update.

Actually it looks like I should have stipulated both systems with the very first post seeing as I mentioned a DS game as well. I was thinking of importing the game as a Christmas present to a friend, but he hasn't seen any of the Smith episodes (and he's a big fan of Tennant) so I figure I'll just burn him some DVDs of the Smith stuff.

Television is a gray area. You know, because it's on television, which is free. Taping shows off television for your friends is a time-honored tradition. The bulk of a television show's profits come from distribution rights, syndication, and advertising, as opposed to a movie where you're actually selling the movie itself, either in the form of an admission ticket or a DVD.

Would it change your opinion if I said I intend to purchase the official DVDs for myself if I could play them?

Doctor Who airs on cable in the US, which is decidedly not free.

It's still not strictly legal. Besides, taping stuff off TV for friends is a tradition that stems from the ephemeral nature of shows in a time when when they didn't go immediately to mass market home video. And the show is currently available for purchase on DVD/Blu-ray/On-Demand. (A measly $.99 per episode for VOD on Amazon.)

Tell that to the makers of Family Guy, whose strong DVD sales brought the show back from the grave. Or Firefly, where DVD sales allowed a feature to be greenlit.
And just because only some of their profits come from DVD sales, that doesn't make it okay to pirate it.

bumping thread to announce dr who mmo:
| Quote: |
The gaming exploits of Doctor Who will expand beyond the adventure game series that kicked off last year. Another game based on the long-running show has been ordered by the BBC, and this time, it'll be an MMO.
In Doctor Who: Worlds in Time, players will "enter the TARDIS and be set a challenge by the mysterious Time Lord to help him defend civilized culture against infamous Doctor Who enemies." They'll do this by "using their wits to solve time-bending puzzles and pulse-pounding challenges."
The game will be developed by Three Rings, a San Francisco-based developer that has previously worked on Puzzle Pirates, Bang! Howdy, and iPad game Corpse Craft.
BBC Worldwide's Robert Nashak said, "Three Rings is the ideal team for this groundbreaking creative partnership. Not only are they visionaries in the online gaming space, they are lifelong Doctor Who fans with a passion for delivering the level of quality that our players will expect and deserve."
Worlds in Time won't be the first free-to-play Doctor Who game on the market. Last year, an episodic adventure game was released that enjoyed enough success to warrant a second series. |
