The substance is interesting but it takes forever to get to it.

The editing of the video sucked. It doesn't even start for 2.5 minutes. There is so much downtime that this video could have literally been 8 minutes long and much more captivating.

It's just a poor man's Garry's Mod. I still don't understand why anyone bothers with it.

I like it because I can't figure out what I'm doing in Garry's Mod, also Garry's Mod doesn't have Green Exploding Penises.

Because GMod gives you everything from the start. You don't earn shit. The online is full of 12 year-olds who wanna RP all day and rage at the slightest thing (although, the same can be said for a lot of SMP Minecraft servers).

Also, Minecraft costs more than GMod.

Rage-filled RP is what makes the online so fun. Not that I go online often; I just run a private server and screw around on physics maps with my brother and occasionally one of his dumb friends.

But to be fair, to get the most out of Garry's Mod, you need to buy all of the compatible Valve games, so it can easily add up to more than three times the cost of Minecraft.

I really don't understand this phenomenon. But then again, I rarely understand humanity's seemingly arbitrarily chosen phenomenons.

Then why come in here just to bitch about it?

I messed around with Minecraft for a couple weeks, the Sydlexia server actually, and it was tons of fun. But after said weeks, I realized how much of a time waster it was and gave it up. It was fun while it lasted, but that wasn't very long. I can understand people getting wrapped up in it and I'm not gonna give them grief for it.

I feel similar to Josh on this one.

Although I have heard that it was made much better by continued development.

I tried playing it once. I quit after an hour of failing to detonate the TNT.

By "it", do you mean the free Creative mode, or the actual game? My guess is, it was the former, since it'd be damn near impossible to get TNT in the actual game within an hour, without some sort of cheat-y method. In Creative mode, the majority of the blocks don't have an actual use, they just have different outer textures. You have to remember, Creative is Alpha version 0.30 of the game, and is well over a year old at this point. The actual game is up to Beta 1.3 as of today, and is practically a different game from Creative, and is an amazingly different game from Garry's Mod, since the last time I checked, you didn't have to mine for resources or build your own tools to do so in Garry's Mod, or have a health bar and enemies hounding you daily.

Yeah, from what I understand of Gary's Mod, the two are nothing alike.

Because I enjoy participating in discussions on this message board, even if I have a negative thought about said discussion. I'm sorry my opinions can't all be rosey flavoured ass smoke for you Joshy.

As much as we like to argue back and forth. for fun most of the time, I must first point out that "rosey flavoured ass smoke" should totally be a west london industrial/techno band.

I played the online version a year or so ago and was completely frustrated with it. I had no guidance as to what to do and nobody to do it with. I was confused most with the TNT since there wasn't any way to light it, not even placing it close to the magma on the bottom of the playfield. Would they really include an explosive tile without implementing any way to actually use it? I did stuff like get to the top and bottom of the world, destroy every tile in a certain region, draw a penis into the scenery, and it all brought me no joy. Nothing I did had any consequence. There's so little to do and so little reason to try anything that I can't imagine the full version would be much different, short of the obligation to be totally awesome with the new tools provided with it. Also, you do have a health bar and enemies to deal with in Garry's Mod, or at least the version I have. There's even Minecraft-themed maps for Garry's Mod that simulate some of the features of the former, but again, they didn't excite me for long. I'd like to think that Minecraft is one of those "love it or hate it" games, but the sheer number of supporters for it makes me pause for thought.

Ah shit, did I really add the "u" in "flavour"?

I gotta get out of this country. It's CHANGING me!

It's not so bad. I keep typing in the "u" in "color" even though I have no predisposition to in writing.

Very clever of you to pass judgment on the game based on a version of it that was not even current at the time you played it, Excel. I didn't think I'd need to repeat myself, but Creative was version 0.30 of fucking Alpha of the game. TNT had no purpose in it, the same as nearly every other block had no purpose in it, because the game was not done being developed at that point. Hence, you know, being a game in the alpha stages of development. By your standards, there is no actual "point" to Creative, no consequences, no goals, but that's what a lot of people out there love about it. Take five seconds and look through this thread and you'll see that your fellow Syd Lexians made a shitload of cool stuff and enjoyed themselves pretty damn well, all without any consequences for their actions or any ultimate goal to the game.

Also, if you take half a second to search Youtube, you'd see that TNT eventually was programmed to work, as you can find dozens of videos of people blowing the fuck out of anything and everything you can think of. As for you not finding anyone else in the world, that'd be because Minecraft isn't some kind of MMO where everyone plays on the same server, particularly at the time you played it. You likely went into a single player server for Creative, or blundered into a multiplayer server that was empty at the time.

Minecraft is a game where you get out of it what you put into it, if you go in expecting the game to tell you what to do and what's expected of you, you're up shit creek without a paddle, because it's not that kind of game. It's a game of freedom, exploration, and creativity, of surviving on your own or with some friends when you start with nothing, of building whatever the fuck you want, of exploring the land in any direction you choose, for however long you choose, considering the world will keep randomly generating until either your computer gives out because the map is too massive or you reach the size limit of roughly 8 times the size of the Earth. If doing all this stuff alone truly upsets you, there's hundreds, if not thousands, of multiplayer servers advertised on the game's forums, including more than one Syd Lexian server, I can think of Knyte's and my own off the top of my head, and I know Mr. Satire wants to start one, too.

Also, for the record, if someone doesn't like Minecraft, I don't mind at all, to each his own and all that. I just get pissed when someone passes judgment on the game based on a version that hasn't been current in God knows how long, and thinks that the game hasn't improved one tiny bit in all this time, despite not knowing a blessed thing about the actual game.

Either way, the first impression didn't excite me and I've long since lost interest. I don't know what people saw in it while it was current, but I completely missed the point, so it's too late for me. Also, I've never heard anyone call it "Creative" before. And besides, I have alternatives that I already paid for before hearing about this. That and Dwarf Fortress, which is what you described sounded like to me.
