Well, I had a PSP, and that didn't impress me.

There weren't that many games that I wanted for it. The ones that were suppose to be the mega titles, I didn't really enjoy playing. (Liberty City Stories wasn't fun to play, because the screen was just too small for that kind of game.) All the games I really wanted for the PSP, never came out in the US. (Suikoden I + II, Romance Of The Three Kingdoms, and of course Gran Turismo 4 Portable.)

So, then I started thinking about getting a DS Lite. But, again, there are not too many games that catch my eye. Castlevania looks awesome, and I wouldn't mind the Final Fantasy remakes, but that's about it.

The system I am seriously considering is a GP2X.

Those last two pics just make me laugh. It can run WIN95, but it takes over 6 minutes to load it. Razz

For those of you who have never heard of it, here's the skinny:

The GP2X is an open-source, Linux-based handheld video game console which was designed for homebrew developers as well as commercial developers. It runs emulators for game consoles such as Neo Geo, CPS1+2, Sega Genesis, Commodore 64, NES, SNES, Pc-engine/TurboGrafx 16, and others. Most of them at 100% speed.

It also can play Divx movies, and most audio formats.

It's basically a purely emulation console. There are only a couple of commercial games available for it.

More info here:
http://www.gp2x.com/

For $200, I can get the Value Pack which contains:
GP2X System
5 Games
USB Cable
Headphones
Console Pouch
Hand Strap
4 Rechargable batteries w/case

So, what do you guys think? Personally, I think it would be the best way to go, as I would have 1000s of games to choose from to play. (SNES, GENESIS, C64, Neo Geo, and such would keep me happy for a long time.)

Should I get one, go for a DS Lite, or hold out awhile longer?

I say, if you just want emulation and stuff, go for the GP2X. It looks cool, and I really wanna play my shit on that.

Wanna play current and future cool games? go for the DS lite. I have one (black), and if you are able to import, Go for Bleach DS 2 (By treasure & sega). That will set you straight nearly forever, like me. Best fighting game on the DS or PSP, It's online, and hopefully the 1st one will come here this fall (also online) 'cause Bleach is the shit here now. Also... stop, I'm sayin' too much!

.....anyway, I'm bad at giving advice, so never mind my decision. ^^

I personally would go with the DS. You can always play your emulated games at home. In contrast its a bit more difficult to play DS games on the comp, and certainly not as satisfying.

Also, I bring my laptop when I wanna play emulated stuff, and it impresses people on the 1 train, especially the tourists ^^

No, I don't have online inside a subway.

I played Eva 64 and Kunio-kun (original AC game) once and I had the whole row of seats looking at me.

I heart showing off.

Why, oh, why, does the GP2X not run Sega Mark lll/Master System games!?

edit: it does, but...

And also, Knyte, It does emulate those consoles, but most of them are in their early stages (MAME can only play Robotron and Green Beret, and a few others), and SNES, Genesis and PC engine emulators are not without faults.

Also, if you wanna get Video amd Music support, the DS MP3 player is out in Europe, or you can get a complete Play-yan Micro unit imported from Japan.

There are accesories that can make the DS lite play NES, SNES, etc

I'd say screw that thing and get a laptop...

a friend of mine got one with 2gig of DDR2 17inch screen dual core proccessor, full keyboard pad, 128mb graphics card (the only real downside) vista ready (if you want to upgrade), for 750 dollars....

And for the hell of it came with a free printer... But this was a promotional deal during Black Friday, or Black out friday.... (oh yeah, and a free car wash) Rolling Eyes

Be nice to have 256 graphics card (dont' think they make 512's yet for laptops, but might be wrong)

Other than that a great deal. and only 500 dollars more than that thing..

it may not be as portable.. but it really depends where you'll be taking the thing...

I know you'll play it a lot for sure... there are just too many good games if it can have all of those, as you say it can...

But on the other hand the DS will have more distinguishable games that can't readly play on a laptop or the thing you suggest....

That reminds me: Does anyone recall a head-mounted "game system" from the mid-90s that played little red LCD versions of popular games (the one I had, then subsequently tore apart, and then was thrown away, came with Mortal Kombat 3)?

The head-gear strapped around the head and placed a small reflective screen in front of the right eye.

I think he is talking about a Virtual Boy.

Nah, it wasn't a Virtual Boy.

I know what he's talking about. They would have had to be relatively cheap (I had one when I was younger and my parents are cheap), and they looked like a crappy rip-off of a scouter from Dragon Ball Z.

Virtual Boy was fun, though. Especially playing Jack Bros. when we were camping.

So, I could pay a one time fee of $200 for the GP2X, which will do everything I want. Or pay $129 on a DS, then spend $69.90 more to import a Play-yan Micro for the A/V support, then pay another $164 on a NEO Flash so I can play emulators. (http://www.gameboy-advance.net/nintendo_ds/neo-flash.htm)

Hmm.... $200 (Not including Mem cards) vs. $363 (Not including mem cards)

Also, as far as emulation goes. The MAME emulator has over a 1000 games working! Checkout all the blue boxes on this page for reviews on the best emulators for the GP2X: http://craig.gp2x.de/review/GP2XReview.html

I think I am leaning more towards the GP2X more and more.

Knyte: Go for the GP2X. At least with it, you know that you'll have hundreds, maybe thousands of games you can play (off of one single SD card) investing 200 in the unit itself, and another $40 for a 2GB SD card. I'm going to save up for one myself.

I love the fact that it runs the ScummVM. I could play Beneath a Steel Sky on that.

We expect a full review if you get one.

I have decided that when I get my bonus check in mid April, I am ordering a GP2X. Maybe sooner if I can juggle some bills. Wink

And, when I do get one, I'll shoot a reveiw of it. Might be fun.

I'd just go for a tablet PC. It might cost way more, but you can play every emulator out there.
