Blazing, I never even bothered with the monster arena stuff, it's simply my OPINION that between the SNES, PSX, and DS versions, that I liked the DS version the most, especially since it included the extra ending of the PSX version.

I'm sorry. It's still sort of a sore spot with me. When I got this for DS, I was excited because of all of the new features that were supposed to be added, most of which just fell flat.

Seconding Super Mario RPG. It's loads of fun, and the music is catchy as hell. It's also very user friendly and a perfect start for a beginner.

Thirded

Super Mario RPG is probably one of the funnest and easiest RPGs you'll ever play. It got me into RPGs and it still holds up even after.

It's probably my favorite game ever. Highly quotable too.

Will try Super mario RPG this weekend, so far im playing Final fantasy 2, or 4 which ever one that is. So far its preety interesting, If cecil is such a "Dark Knight" then why does he care so much about stealing from innocent people. But then again maybe im just judging the character way too fast and being a doucher

Definitely Earthbound. Play Earthbound. It is straight forward, fun, addictive and hilarious. One of my favorite games of all time.

I am also a n00b trying to get into RPG's SnesGuy and I went with Chrono Trigger as my first one, and I gotta say that so far what I have played is loads of fun and it was pretty easy to pick up.

To experience the best of the various styles, I would just echo what has already been said... Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, FFII, and Shining Force II. Chrono Trigger is probably my favorite out of those, but they each offer a different way of playing.

To an RPG noob, I'd suggest staying away from the early Final Fantasies (up to 7) because they're pretty hardcore as far as RPGs go. I love RPGs and couldn't get through FF4 because of the difficulty and tediousness involved. In fact, anything released before say, 1998, is going to be like that with a few exceptions like Chrono Trigger.

I'd suggest Golden Sun (GBA), FF9, Earthbound, Super Mario RPG (or better yet, Partners in Time/Bowser's Inside Story for the DS; so much fucking fun).

For something a little more modern, try Shin Megami Persona: Devil Survivor for DS (assuming you're in the US and can find it). It's a very unique and fun take on the RPG genre that has done away with the traditional pitfalls of RPGs such as random encounters, frustrating bosses, and need for grinding. You know it's good because I'm playing through it for the second time when I'm not known for completeing RPGs even once.

To this day, I cannot play FF1 for more than 45 minutes. I've told myself 100 times, I will one day beat that, but I constantly put it off because I grow bored with it quick.

I love this game as well and the demon fusion is one of my favorite parts of the game. My only complaint is the damn CD doesn't work and I can't get a free replacement...

This is weak. You really thought all of them up to 7 were too hard? Also, you tell him to stay away from anything before 1998 and then tell him to play two games released before 1998.

Not to mention you throw him into an Atlus Dungeon Crawler like Strange Journey, do you want to lose an RPG fan forever Panda?

Haha, make him play Baroque. That's nice and easy, right?

Wow, you guys really need to work on your reading comprehension.

Josh: I said before 1998 with some exceptions like Super Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger. And no, the FFs before 7 weren't "too hard" persay (although I did find 4 to be annoyingly difficult for one who doesn't enjoy tedious grinding), they're just hardcore in a primitive sense and would be boring to one used to modern games. That's what I meant. An RPG noob will likely find FF1-6 to be quite bland and tedious.

Ash: Where did I mention Strange Journey? I suggested Devil Survivor which isn't a dungeon crawler and is in fact, a very fresh and approachable RPG. Believe me, if I've completed it twice, it's good for noobs.

Well if you're looking for a really easy starter RPG, you could play Paper Mario I guess.

If someone, other than pandajuice apparently, found FF6 bland and tedious I'd like to meet them so I could yell "what's wrong with you?!" to their face. Especially with it present on the just about any top 10 for SNES RPGs throughout the internet and game magazines.

If you're playing the original translation, it almost completely skips past this concept, but Cecil didn't really want to be a Dark Knight, he did so because the king ordered him. He's not really evil.

Yo.

I like the game up to a point, but I think there's way too many boring characters to collect, there's way too much time spent grinding levels, and the whole experience really just plain goes south for me once the World of Ruin hits - it just sucks all the fun out of the game for me.

I definitely agree with Earthbound and Super Mario RPG. Both of these games are basically RPG's that try hard not to look too much like RPG's in order to appeal to the average gamer. Earthbound has those psychadelic backgrounds in their battle segments and Super Mario RPG feels more like an isometric platform game that plays out really well, which makes for a great bridge to RPG-style gameplay while at the same time holding your hand.

I've tried playing it 5 different times now because I so WANT to love it, but the farthest I've gotten is just past the ghost train (about 2 hours in) and just have no desire to continue. It's not that I dislike it, it's just that I have to make an effort to turn it on and slog through it which isn't something people do when they're stimulated and enjoying a game.

That's what I was saying above when I recommended he avoid RPGs from before a certain year (which admittedly was arbitrarily chosen). Many of them just don't hold up, especially to one used to modern gaming as it has changed a lot since 1992. So if you didn't catch FF6 when you were 12 and have nostalgia for it, it's likely you won't be as smitten as everyone else is. That's my situation.

I can understand that. If you weren't there to experience the games when they were fresh, I can understand them feeling stale now.

But really, the first couple hours in Midgar in FF7 felt stale as hell when it was brand new, and only when I finally got to the world map did I think I was going to enjoy it. Of course I did, but not as much as the ones I played as a younger impressionable guy.

Pandas opinion of FFVI is just insane in my opinion. I had a friend who had only played pc-rpg's like Morrowind, Baldurs Gate 2 etc, untill I showed him FFVI two years ago, and he fell completely in love with it (although he did admit that he thought it was a bit long-winded in the start). It is also a quite easy rpg (there is only one or two difficult bosses in the game), the story is awesome, the characters are great, and the gameplay is turn-based (and does not require reflexes) and easy to understand. I don't know if it is the best choice, but it is definitely not a bad choice at all. And I would guess a lot of newer jrpg's only would help us create an rpg-hater for life if he was to start with them.
