The big issue with Dawn of Souls is that it's too easy. FF1 on the NES may have been a little grind heavy, but honestly, that's what made FF1 and the first three Dragon Warrior games fun. You didn't have a map, so you had to explore, and god forbid you ended up somewhere you weren't supposed to go, or you'd be dead within two rounds.

But see, that kind of stuff was only fun in 1988 when we didn't know any better or have anything else. Grind heavy sandbox games with no direction is a primitive form of game design that today's gamers absolutely will not put up with. So they have to remake these classic games with today's gamer in mind and I for one appreciate that.

But another FFIV remake? There's already one on the DS. I'm starting to lose patience waiting for a FFVI remake.

But they didn't update the storyline at all or add any more depth to the game. So the game was basically just "walk your way through a weak story". It was pointless. It was like reading a shitty book. The game was what it was, and Dawn of Souls did nothing to modernize it. The only thing Dawn of Souls serves to do is make Mystic Quest look challenging.

But Dawn of Souls had FF2! That game was pretty fun, right?

Call me old fashion, but I prefer exploring, random moster attacking, turn-based battling, grind-fest RPGs. I don't want or need the game to hold my hand through the entire thing. I didn't when I was 12, and 20 years later, I still don't.

You want to run down a linear map, button mashing your way through monsters, then go play Devil May Cry.

I like having full control of my party to decide what they are doing, and being able to plan out full strategies. Not this new system of only controlling one character and having to rely on the AI to play the other characters. Forgot that.

I still want to grind. I think that is why I am always overleveled in today's RPG's where grinding really isn't necessary.

I have been (finally) playing through my copy of Final Fantasy XIII. I'm enjoying it. But I would prefer something much less linear. I like open worlds, doing things in different orders, searching for hidden/rare weapons/enemies/characters. I am enjoying it for what it is, but it is really more of a movie first with some gameplay added between scenes.

In regards to controlling characters, I actually liked the Gambit system in Final Fantasy XII. Some people thought it was just a way to get out of controlling the characters, but I thought if they took that system into the future, you had the potential of having much larger parties fighting much more difficult bosses or hoards of enemies. Success could depend on getting the gambits set up right.

Amen. I miss the days when video games looked like video games. Not movies. If I want to watch a movie I'll put in a DVD. When I play a video game I want to 'play' it, not watch it.

Once you actually beat XIII it's like a second game opens up, it took me like an additional 100+ hours after beating it to Platinum the damn thing, and the world map is completely open for the most part with all the missions and what not that open after you complete the game.

I love FFIV and honestly the only reason why I'll buy this is for the After Years and the new story. Otherwise, I wouldn't care.

I also miss the old RPG's of grinding, exploring, finding rares, and all that good stuff.

WHERE DID YOU GO RPGS OF THE PAST?!? WHY DID YOU CHANGE SO MUCH?!?!

Marking the fifth time this game has been released in North America, Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection will hit the PlayStation Portable on April 19, 2011. In celebration of the game's 20th anniversary, this is going to see the combination of both the original Final Fantasy IV and The After Years.

The Complete Collection will see a new 2D visual look as well as a new soundtrack arrangement. This collection will retail for $29.99 when it releases in April.

I would buy it if they released it for Wii/PC/DS... Hell, I might even get a PS3 or Xbox... but they can take the PSP and shove it up their fucking asses.

The PSP gets shit on more than I have ever seen. I don't own one, I had a DS Lite, gave it to my niece, and recently bought an XL. Now I'm looking at the PSP games and wondering is this system all that bad? I mean I am really interested in Crisis Core, Tactic Ogre, Kingdom Hearts and this game. Is there anyone who is not a Nintendo Fan boy who can convince me this system is as shitty as everyone says it is?

its not really that shitty. the battery is shit though.

but the games that are there for it are decent. they just dont have as much of a selection as the DS does. i bought one used from a friend of a friend for $100 and i dont regret that decision.

and if you manage to learn how to downgrade the firmware, you can make it a nice emulator for your NES SNES etc etc

See, you have to be careful with that. If you have one of the really recent firmwares, it can get really expensive for a downgrade, requiring several different components and has no real guarantee of success, so you could go from having a nubby brick with no battery life to having a nubby brick that will do even less. Provided if I lost my PSP to such a cause, I would not be too upset, as I got the thing for the best price possible, free.

But honestly, the biggest issue with this thing beyond a small game library, a crappy interface, and the terrible battery life is how loud the damn thing is. I'm not even kidding, the damn thing is louder than the combined noise of my laptop's fan and it's cooling pad's fan going at the same time. Also, the sound it makes when it loads something makes you cringe, if only because it sounds like the PSP is eating whatever's inside it.

haha i agree on the noise factor. especially the whole loading deal.

i never actually bothered w/the downgrading of the firmware. seemed like too much work. so much easier on the DS

Upon reflecting what games I'd like to have if I had a PSP, more than half of those titles are from Square-Enix's catalog:
The FFT remake
Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
This seemingly penultimate version of FF 4
Crisis Core
Dissidia
Dissidia: 012 Dissidia Final Fantasy
Persona 3 Portable
Super Robot Taisen Z 2
Zettai Hero Project: Unlosing Ranger vs. Dark Death Evil Man

I originally got my PSP just to brick it, but it was a pain, so I started to play games on it. I'm glad I did, because I love my PSP. My PSP doesn't make noise unless it's loading, but the battery is indeed shit.

Games I Recommend:
Half-Minute Hero (You have to get this game)
Sonic Rivals 1 & 2
Ys 3: Oath in Felgana (The game from the SNES top 100, only not 2D and not shitty)
ZHP: Unlosing Ranger (Disgaea-y goodness mixed with Power Ranger type shows)
Disgaea 1 & 2
Dissidia Final Fantasy
Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles (Classic Castlevania with SOTN as an unlockable!)
Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero?
Riviera: The Promised Land
Phantasy Star Portable
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
Guilty Gear Judgment
Megaman Powered Up (The true MM1, with 8 playable bosses!)
Megaman Maverick Hunter X (MMX, with a playable Vile and super cheesy dialog)

Big words hurt my head. Half Minute Hero is indeed awesome though. I wish the whole game was the Hero version though, I wasn't to fond of the princess or the prince of darkness.

I have an old PSP-1000 (the original) and have the Custom Firmware on it for Homebrew Games and making it effectively a portable emulator.

I love my PSP. Metal Gear Solid, Kingdom Hearts, Hot Shots Golf, Crises Core, FF Tactics, Disedia (or however you spell it).

So...
http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Final_Fantasy_IV_The_Complete_Collection

This comes out April 19th. It comes with some art cards and a code for a Classic Cecil costume for Dissidia 012. Everywhere but here is getting a Collector's Edition, but they really don't look to great. I am so looking forward to this...
