You know, I see this all over the news, Facebook and whatever else but I could never understand:
Newfoundland gets twice the weather like this in winter so why is there so much concern about this?
I only have one thing to say to all the people in Chicago or other parts where the snow storm is:
come to Canada.

Because we're not in Newfoundland.
There is an absolutely huge difference between how snow affects a large sparsely populated area and how it affects a densely populated urban environment. In addition, we've been hit with a densely packed series of storms the likes of which we haven't seen in at least my memory, and quite simply, we've run out of places to put the snow. So it's a big deal.
And location is important. 6 inches of snow today for you means nothing. For me, it means a day off for the kids, probably no work for the people who can afford to skip it, and we haul ourselves out the next day. 6 inches in Atlanta, Georgia kills the city for a week. It's abnormal weather they're not used to handling, so it's a big deal and takes some special stuff to make work, and that's also why it's a big deal.
And it works both ways. You guys have a week and a half of 35 degree days, I bet it's a big deal. Here, it's just another heat wave, In Atlanta, that's called "a cool August".
Basically what Satsui said is right. My city hasn't seen this much snow at once in my lifetime that I can remember. Hell I'm not sure we even saw this much snow total over the course of the last 2 winters. What I do know is that the budget for both the state and city snowplow workers has been slashed in the last 5 years because of how little snow we've been getting.
My Cousin isn't even allowed to dump salt anymore without getting authorization first because their budgets are so shaky they might not be able to replace the salt they use, and if a worse storm comes they might not have salt to fight it with.
A storm that dumps 9-10 inches is huge for even a town in Illinois, it is gonna shut us down for at least another day if not through Friday. Some people, who are living on that edge where missing a day of work means they can't pay bills, are gonna fall behind because of this. So it is of concern to us.

Satsui laid it out pretty well, but I'll further clarify.
The individual and government budgets where snow is more prevalent is higher and over time more equipment has been purchased to accommodated it.
Most areas that have been drastically effective have plows, not massive snow throwers. There are limited locations where snow can be dumped. Our buildings aren't designed to carry the weight of 3+ft of snow. Our landscapes are designed to work with drainage systems that don't get blocked up. Shoveling 5" snow storms a few times a season isn't a big deal. Shoveling 12" snow storms a few times in a month is brutal, thats right, not everyone has snowblowers because this amount of immediate snow is not normal.
And of course there is the worst part, daytime weather at 33 degrees. When not a lot of snow melts, but just enough to cause a sheet of ice. Our snow isn't just 3 feet deep on the ground, it is 1/2 inch of ice, with a foot of snow, then 1/2 inch of ice with a foot of snow, then a 1/2 inch of ice with a foot of snow.
This wasn't meant to be a pissing contest. Everyone knows that Canada gets more snow than the US, it is bigger and colder. This thread is about deviation from the normal weather pattern.

Had to push a few people out at work tonight. I live in a valley, so I believe we get more snow. It's ridiculous.
