This is a game called "Lose/Lose".

Here's the site's description of it:

Quote:
Lose/Lose is a video-game with real life consequences. Each alien in the game is created based on a random file on the players computer. If the player kills the alien, the file it is based on is deleted. If the players ship is destroyed, the application itself is deleted.

Although touching aliens will cause the player to lose the game, and killing aliens awards points, the aliens will never actually fire at the player. This calls into question the player's mission, which is never explicitly stated, only hinted at through classic game mechanics. Is the player supposed to be an aggressor? Or merely an observer, traversing through a dangerous land?

Why do we assume that because we are given a weapon an awarded for using it, that doing so is right?

By way of exploring what it means to kill in a video-game, Lose/Lose broaches bigger questions. As technology grows, our understanding of it diminishes, yet, at the same time, it becomes increasingly important in our lives. At what point does our virtual data become as important to us as physical possessions? If we have reached that point already, what real objects do we value less than our data? What implications does trusting something so important to something we understand so poorly have?

KILLING ALIENS IN LOSE/LOSE WILL DELETE FILES ON YOUR HARDDRIVE PERMANANTLY

So, who is brave enough to try it?

I might review it, by setting up a VM machine just to play the game, to see what gets deleted.

That... is horrifying. I can just see someone not reading it all the way and losing everything on their computer, or worse, a troll removes the warning as to what this game actually does. Who wants to bet that if you beat the game, it deletes you entire System32 folder?

I like how the file extensions pop up after the alien explodes, where the points would normally be.

I get what teh guy is going for, but since when did games become about learning the value of consequences? I thought the appeal of gaming was escapism and entertainment.

I love the idea, and I've been waiting for someone to program something like this. If you've ever played poker for money, you know it's almost a different (and better) game when loosing hurts.

But, I have too much to loose in my pc, so I definedly won't try it out yet. But I'm tempted.

Windows File Protection would deny it that opportunity.

Still, this game scares the hell out of me. I think I'll send it to my co-workers.

It'd be great if the game was on a page that didn't have any warning or instructions.

Shake it, Quake it, Space Kaboom.

Yeah, but then you'd be leaning towards lawsuits.

Pretentious douchebaggery. How about this for a game with consequences, its exactly like pong except every time you lose at it I get to rape your dog. So basically this dickweed has confused creating a legit reward punishment system with the idea that gamers would and will do anything for points, a conceit left far behind since the late 80's. Anyone playing this is just participating in pretty standard self-flaggelating dick waving, rather than his actual goal.

It would have been better if that there was a shared file setup, where you deleted the file of someone else every time you kill an alien. But in return, they could do the same to you. I think that would have conveyed the point better. You also need a scoreboard, where people can compete for top score.

Yeah, I'm with FNJ and Robo on this one. It's a retarded concept designed to be "deep" and thought provoking but it isn't. Yes, virtual possessions (files) are valuable to us; what's your point?

And no one will actually play it as it's intended.
