Quote:
Pensacola, Florida (News Journal) -- Two teenagers were shot Saturday night by a 72-year-old man they allegedly beat with a baseball bat during a home-invasion robbery in Ferry Pass.
About 8:45 p.m., three teenage males knocked on the door of a home in the 3300 block of Raines Street, Pensacola Police Department officials said.
When resident Jack Crawford, 72, answered the door, one of the teens hit him in the head with an aluminum bat and tried to force his way into the home.
"I opened it up, and he hit me right off. ... Wham! Split my head open," Crawford said.
"So I shot him and another guy," Crawford said, chuckling as he told the story to a Pensacola News Journal reporter Sunday evening. "I could have shot the third one, but I would have had to shoot him in the back as he ran away."
The attackers fled the scene on foot, and Crawford's 70-year-old sister, who also lives at the home, called the police, he said.
Earl Benard, 15, Nathaniel Nichols, 17, and Curtis Crenshaw, 18, all of Pensacola, have been charged with home-invasion robbery and aggravated battery in connection with the case, police said.
Crenshaw and Nichols were arrested at a local hospital after being dropped off for treatment with gunshot wounds to their torsos. Benard later was arrested at a nearby rental home.
Nichols remained hospitalized Sunday afternoon, police said. Crenshaw was treated and released and was being held Sunday evening at Escambia County Jail on $300,000 bond.
State Attorney Bill Eddins said he plans to try all three suspects as adults.
Crawford said he grabbed his handgun as a precaution and was holding it at his side when he opened the door Saturday night.

Quite a story i must say, to take a blow to the head like that and still be conscious at 72 is amazing in its self, but to get and still be able to fire a weapon, this guy must have a iron head.

I'm not familiar with Pensacola but is it necessary to answer the door at 8:45pm with your gun drawn?

I like how he opted not to shoot the kid in the back. The article seems to have omitted the part where the old man yelled "get off my lawn" as the kid ran away. I assume that's how it went down anyway.

No, I don't think I will fuck Stummies.

If anyone knocks at my door (who I didn't know were coming over) after 08:30pm, I would be in arms reach of my boken.

I want a shotgun, but my wife hates guns. I told her we wouldn't even need to keep ammo in the house for it. If someone hears a Remington 870 cocking from the other side of the door, they are not sticking around if they originally had any bad intentions.

Yea seriously, what Knyte said. If someone knocks at my door after a certain time and I have no indication previously of who it may be or I do not recognize the vehicle I would have a firearm with me as well. My fiance is paranoid enough she probably would let me have a gun, but then again she watches all those Criminal Minds and CSI shows.

I have a Mossburg 500 shotgun, and I keep it unloaded, in the closet, in our bedroom. (I also have a full Kevlar vest with ballistic plates and a Kevlar helmet not that I would actually suit up before I opened the door, but it would be pretty intimidating for me to come out suited up with a shotgun.)

Yes, if someone knocked on my door late at night, I would have it in my hand, with at least a shell in my pocket.

Although, the sound of someone racking a shotgun is pretty terrifying if you know it's intended for you.

I keep a baseball bat within arms reach of my bed - but I'm upstairs in my house. If someone broke in, they'd hear me freaking out and running down there.

In Florida? Yes.

Keep an eye on this story though as it's only a matter of time before the thugs sue the old man for shooting them....and win.

I'm actually kind of surprised he wasn't arrested too.
