Most of you already know about this, but I said I'd make a thread, so I will.
In short, both Preng and MellowMeek did videos of Megaman X2 a while back, and when I watched them, I was very interested in what they did the same, and what they did differently. I wanted to try an experiment out along the same lines - a bunch of us do walkthroughs for the same game, we compare results, and see how they turn out.
After little debate and discussion, Mega Man 2 was deemed the perfect game for this.
So, if you want to get involved, here's what you need to do. It's simple:
1 - Post here saying you're interested.
2 - Record a walkthrough of Mega Man 2. You can do it any way you want, any style you want, normal or difficult, your choice. The only rule is it needs to be a walkthrough of -some- sort. Not a speedrun, not a "I'm so awesome look at me do all this awesome shit" run, you need to show or explain what you're doing (note that you can do a speedrun or a challenge run of the game if you want, you just need to show how and why you do what you do).
3 - Beginning on February 13th, start posting your videos on YouTube. This gives everyone a little over two weeks, which should be plenty of time. I'd suggest you post 2 stages at a time, so everyone begins and finished about the same time. This thread would also be a good place to show videos.
That's it. Nothing formal, just a little project for everyone. If you have any questions, or need any help, ask here or find someone who knows better in the chat.
And in case you're wondering, here's Preng's X2 playlist: http://www.youtube.com/user/PrengOfficial#grid/user/6A0DD696C3DB1F1A
And here's Meek's : http://www.youtube.com/user/M33kinator#grid/user/6237CCF4F6DB2C0A
EDIT: Forgot one important one - you need to complete the whole game.

I'm in. It will be very cool to see everyone's efforts and variations in playstyle.
I am also actually quite curious to see if anyone who signs up goes with audio commentary. I tend to find audio commentary to be either annoying or non-entertaining, but I think some of you guys could pull it off.
Also, thanks for the plug. Indeed, it was quite fun to compare my style with Meek's, and I even learned quite a bit about the game.
Finally, I unfortunately must pester you once more about codecs. I have installed the Camstudio Lossless 1.4 Codec that you sent me, and I am very pleased with its level of quality! However, for some truly bizarre reason, when I import the .avi file into Windows Movie Maker, the colors get psychotic.
I doubt you have bumped into this problem, but do you have any ideas on what I should do?

Then you are a very bad person and you need to do so immediately.
Also, this project probably isn't for you.

Oh yeah Bunny? I didn't want to play in your walk-through movie making anyway!
*Fun Fact* Atma has not played ANY MegaMan games with the exception of a couple on GameBoy, like the Grey Brick one.

Count me in for this.
...There's a slim chance I may go with audio commentary while I play, but it's more likely I'll just go with annotations, I dunno yet.

This could be fun. I've never recorded a playthrough before, what do I need?

You have two easy options - you can use an emulator and record directly from it (VirtuaNES is a good one for this), or you can use a screen capture program like Camtasia or CamStudio (the latter is free). Windows Movie Maker will let you edit the videos, and as for commentary, you can do that with WMM or on YouTube with annotations or video comments.
I would be lost trying to do voice commentary myself, but you need a mic, of course.

On a hunch, I uploaded the video to YouTube, and the colors come out correct. So, other than Windows Movie Maker going temporarily colorblind, there doesn't seem to be any issues now. Thanks again for your assistance and for sending me the codec.
Atma, this is also the first Mega Man NES game that I've played. I highly recommend you give it a shot, if possible. Also, that Mega Man Game Boy game beat the crap out of me when I was a kid.

Sounds like a ton of fun, but MM was never my series of choice, and I've never been good at it. I'll be cheering you all on though!
Now, if we ever do something like this for LoZ, LtP or anything in the FF series, I'll be in so damn fast your head will spin!

I would be in if someone pointed me to any way of recording a video on a Mac.

You should totally check out the IRC channel.
While you're at it, go check out my band, Her Majesty's Heroines.

well of course I would use emulation, as I'm not about to hook my NES up to a computer that isn't even in the same room anymore, but are there certain codecs or settings or anything that would be preferable. quality control, son!

using virtuanes, how do I convert the vpv file into an avi? when I try with the one in the options, it gives me a silly error that says:
"DONT____OPEN
A
FILE"

I have not run into that error, FNJ. You might want to try the CamStudio Lossless Coded v1.4. Again, the .avi file could result in weird colors when viewed in Windows Movie Maker, but it will be fine on YouTube.

To convert it to an avi, just open the emulator itself, then go to Edit > Movie > AVI Convert, from there you have to put in the Mega Man 2 rom in the first box, the .vmv file in the second box, and then a location and filename for the movie in the third box, then select a codec with the Select Video Format button, then you can convert it.
Also, if you are getting .vpv files instead of .vmv, that's highly unusual.

its probably vmv, I probably typed it wrong. I didn't know I had to make up my own location. I'll try that now. Thanks!
