How many people, whilst complaining about the current US regime's 'socialist' president, get Medicare or Social Security? I love the world because it provides a never-ending stream of stupid irony.

I don't know. I don't think he is. Apparently a lot of other folk do, though. I'm pretty sure they're just dumb.

Conservatives believe the entire Democratic party to be socialists because if most Dems had their way, they would be socialist. Universal healthcare, unchecked immigration + affirmative action/raising up minorities, and staggeringly high taxes on the rich are all socialist policies and are all central to being a Democrat.

Moderates and conservatives freak out on those kinds of policies because they aren't exactly compatible with capitalism and have been shown multiple times throughout history to be bad ideas. I live in England where I can see first hand the kind of damage a socialist, free immigration policy can do to a country. There is almost no British culture left anymore. Also, the fact that Brits pay almost twice as much for everything as Americans do because of taxes is what Americans are afraid of when they call Obama a socialist.

Just look across the pond and see what happens when liberal policies get taken too far.

You sure this applies to every so-called socialist policy? Where exactly has universal health care failed so bad, it shouldn't even be considered? Well, Stalin fucked it up eventually, but he was a master at that. I've had the impression that people in Europe today generally concider their socialized medicine ok. (Don't know if it would work in the US, not too familiar with the situation there).

Plus, nothing prevents private medical centers etc. to do business as well, and I've understood that they do quite well (at least in Finland, where I'm from).

I've understood that most socialist/leftists today want to regulate capitalism, not overthrow it completely in some socialist revolution.

The thing is, the people complaining about it may receive these programs, but don't -need- them. They feel they're putting more money in and getting much less of a return, and supporting people who make less money, particularly when the social services system gets abused.

The thing is, most of them are not in a position, and will never be in a position, where they -need- that money. If they spent a year with the only thing keeping them afloat is social services, I think they'd suddenly be a lot more receptive to the idea of funding it. I agree with the -concept- of conservative fiscal theory, but I think in practice you need a social services system.

As for the "socialist" name, it's just a scare word. They want to invote the Red Scare, and if they say "communist", people don't take them seriously.
