+1

It only takes a little while for people to go "hey, maybe we shouldn't just kill people and take their stuff"

Favorite as in religion? As in America has a favorite religion, and that religion is Christianity? If so that's just wrong.

I worded that wrong, to put it simpler, why do you think some people there was a "War on Christmas" as oppose to "wars" on other holidays?

I'm saying that, because a huge chunk of our population is of the christian faith, they and others would assume that we are a christian nation, based on the laws that we pass, social taboos and things put in place to OTHER people and countries we would look as through we're a christian nation.

There is a war on christmas because of 24-hour news networks with nothing better to do so they sensationalize stupid shit like that. If that is even a relevant topic we must have it pretty good here in america.

What laws do we pass that are based on Christianity?

Wow, there is no way those laws could still be enforced.

Seriously, could you Imagine a cop attempting to bust someone for that?

Officer: "Sir, you just used the Lord's name in Vain, WHILE fornicating."

Judge: "Your Sentence is 1 year in Jail and a $30 Fine."

EDIT: How the hell did you pull those out of your ass GP? lol

Well, I lived in MA as a practicing Jew for 5 years and was never arrested. So, I guess they aren't super strict about it. Still, it is a law.

Yeah, but it's probably one of those strange laws that is never, and likely was never, enforced. Like how whaling is illegal in kansas. My scheme was ruined when I found that out

The only ones at this point I can think of at the top of my noddle are the ones involving the ten commandments.

http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr10cj.htm

If I find more, I'll be sure to get back at you with them. Smile

P.S. That's a ruling by the supreme court not a law. The only law was the establishment clause which is covered under our first amendment rights, as well as freedom of religion. There is also an Article which states that a persons religion can not prevent a person from holding office.

Guys, "Seperation of church and state" doesn't mean "politicians can't be religious". It means "there can be no state-sponsored religion", or "government can't pass a saw to favor one religious belief over another". It's perfectly fine to have religious values, and to be perfectly honest, I trust a guy who fears Hell far more than a guy who doesn't (still not as far as I can throw him, but still).

Mr. Governor should have kept his damn opinion of who is and isn't saved to himself, though.

And saying this isn't a Christian nation is putting way too much stock in the actions of a large number of loud atheists. Non-Christians are very much in the minority. We have never elected a non-Christian president (DO NOT START THAT SHIT YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN). We still even open sessions of Congress with a prayer. We do not have an official religion, but it's very clear which one this nation favors.

Laws like what GP posted are state or commonwealth laws. All it takes is for a law like that to be enforced and it will be taken to the Supreme Court for violation of constituional rights in an instant. Then it will be abolished and you can scream GOD DAMN while having anal sex and not have to worry about 2 years in prison with a $330 fine.

I'd also imagine that the fornication law has to deal with having sex in public and being caught. I doubt someone would report a potential fornication in progress and having the cops bust down your doors. (That would be amazingly hilarious though)

Nope. Screwing someone not your wife or husband used to be SERIOUS FUCKING BUSINESS (pardon the pun). Then again, back in those days, so was 30 dollars.

It wouldn't happen now, though.

Well it doesn't explictly say someone that isn't your spouse so interpretations probably varied.

Yes he is allowed to say that as the governor, and no that doesn't necessarily mean that he's gonna run rampant on everyone in Alabama who is not a baptist. It is a mildly alarming statement in that this sort of language is preceded by an aggressive Evangelical push, which disadvantages atheists, freethinkers, and homosexuals to a great degree and to a lesser degree women, Catholics, and African Americans where in southern politics evangelism is inextricably tied with the iconic xenophobic regressive attitudes the south is infamous for.

I would also like to interject right in between the christian nation versus seperation of church and state argument. Our nation was and probably will continue to be a nation made primarily of Christians, but our laws reflect the almost forgotten but very important fact of the time that the "Christian Brothers" of America were fiercely divided along religious lines and to maintain the peace (as well as satisfy the Enlightenment itch of our intellectual founding forefathers) we adopted an agreement of mutual religious neutrality in government.

As it turns out, this policy of neutrality and the assumption of innate human rights rather than tribal affiliated privileges have served us inordinately well, crafting one of the most peaceable assemblies ever created entirely out of culturally diverse immigrants that form and formed our nation.

I would hate to see that go the wayside.

I just hope it's sooner rather than later when this guy gets caught with his hands down some kid's pants, or visiting his Cuban harem.

If this guy was giving a speech and mentioned our founding fathers, similar to The Gettysburg Address, would he be addressing only Christians?

I take exception to the implication that Christians are either pedophiles or adulterous.

Take all the exception to it you like. But it always seems that the ones who preach the loudest about God are the ones most likely to be caught in a men's room sting.

I don't think it was meant to be a statement against Christians in general.

I just take exception to what Sarge said because it was fucking dumb. It's basically implying that Christians are more likely to be pedophiles which is the dumbest fucking thing I have read on here for a long time.

I can't believe people still get so threatened when it comes to religion, as if someone is going to barge in and force you to convert. Most people I know who claim to be "religious" still lives their lives as slothful, lazy, greedy whores. Then they go to church on Xmas and won't eat meat on Fridays during Lent, because they're so devout.

Uh... Seperation of Church and State anyone?

Separation of church and state is not a constitutional principle. The closest thing that appears in the Constitution is the First Amendment which states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

This was devised exclusively to protect religion from government, not the other way around. The idea was that the American government would never impose a national religion or infringe upon the practice of religion.

As for the Treaty of Tripoli, the wording was constructed to make it clear that it was a treaty was between two sovereign nations and not a treaty between Christianity and Islam, as the American government did not have authority to sign such a treaty.
