I, for one, think this is a great idea. A collective Let's play for Dwarf Fortress among Sydlexians sounds like fantastic fun, although it does take a bot to get used to. If you're interested, hit me or Bit up in the IRC. We'll help you out with how to play the game, and general gameplay tips. Hell, I'll give you one of my old fortresses to play around with. But don't be intimidated by it's complexity, Dwarf Fortress can be really, really fun. Just read about BoatMurdered, it's basically a crash course on Dwarf Fortress, along with a hilarious Let's Play among quite a few people :3

So this is a real person and not a bot? I'm confused. I really thought this was spam.

okay, obviously not EVERYONE makes a poll, but you must admit that a good portion of new people seem to do this for some reason.

Hmmm... while I do like games with these kinds of graphics, I don't like the genre of the game.
Also, welcome to the forums, bitwise! I told you (on IRC, for other people not in the know) this would be great!

It's happened before.
On the other hand, I've heard enough about this game to warrant giving it a try. If I get good enough, I may participate in your LP, but I won't do it if my heart's not in it.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind. |

Pretty much anything goes except for the following: 1) using huge bridge hallways to kill demons/seiging armies, and 2) things that make later turns totally unplayable such as flooding the world, mining adamantine, or removing bridges in creative ways so that the pathing eats it and the bridges can't be reconstructed and the fortress descends into an orgy of violence and starvation. |
I lol'd hard.

Did anyone actually read the whole thing? |
I did and I'll give it a shot because I'm bored and waiting on a hard drive to get here sometime tomorrow lol. As long as it isn't super frustrating I will probably enjoy it.
Edit: Well I've started playing and have no clue what I'm doing, but I'm trying to follow tutorials lol. The one I'm following says to try to avoid settling near goblins/aquifers but that seems impossible as the fuckers are everywhere. Basically I can find a spot with no aquifers but goblins are there or the exact opposite no goblins/2+ aquifers lol.

Well I've been playing for like 12 hours now and I have managed to starve my dwarves to death twice and get them murdered by a goblin raid once. I'm on my 12th fortress now and I finally feel like I have some sort of idea what I'm doing. I still have yet to find anything I could actually turn into weapons, mostly just find gems everywhere. I can't seem to keep my dwarves fed but I can manage to get them beer lol. Usually I just turn my huge piles of gems and all the random rock crafting stuff I make into a trade caravan and use them to buy food so the dwarves don't starve.
Stupid dwarves refuse to fish and there is never anything to hunt (not that it would matter because I have no means of producing weapons,) I have huge piles of fuel just waiting to churn out iron/steel if I ever find it though. Interesting game lol.
Edit rather than double post: Ok this game makes me want to keep playing it no matter how badly I fail at it. I did put a graphic mod on it so that it was easier to tell what was what, and that seems to have helped. Before I had to keep trying to look up what each thing was on the web. It is such an amazingly complex game for what it looks like at first glance.
I have actually managed to build a pretty decent fort now. I actually have food and drink for months which I just proved to a goblin seige because it took me the better part of a season to get enough traps set up to break it. I caught 8 of the bastards with cages outside my walls that I had set up to stop the chimps from coming in and the last 5 had to wait while I set up a field of death between the outer wall and inner wall. Finally I let them in and found one of my cats had left a dead lizard body blocking the door through the inner wall... So a dwarf and 3 war dogs rushed out and chased the goblins around for a while leaving goblin body parts strewn all over the place. The last one had both legs and an arm ripped off but somehow survived and managed to crawl around deflecting hits from the dogs before it finally bled to death a mile from its missing body parts. This game is so awesome.
30 seconds after I posted that I'm now seiged by about 50 goblins and trolls of which I've captured 25 or so lol. The last troll bashed down both doors and since I hadn't had time to rearm the stone falls I'm relying on several unarmored untrained dwarves to fend this off. I hadn't made a militia yet though I had the weapons and armor ready to go.
Well the fortress of Graspingaxe is going to be abandoned. I had 3 dwarves survive the raid and the resulting riot. The troll and goblins took out about 60 dwarves and 20 more went fucking nuts after they left and killed each other. A couple of donkeys also went berserk and bit out a kid's liver, that was entertaining until the parent went insane and killed both donkeys and the broker.
*Note to self* Wooden doors are easily kicked down by super strong monsters, use stone next time.

Haha, I bookmarked it and I'll get too it someday. It sounds very interesting and I don't mind dated graphics. I've got too many other games right now though.
