So maybe you've heard about the upcoming Jeopardy match in February between two of the biggest champions in Jeopardy history, and a computer. It's like Kasparov vs. Deep Blue for trivia buffs. The match hasn't happened yet, but they did hold a practice run and well...this happened.
We're doomed.

I don't understand, it's running completely off of AI?
If so, that's fucking crazy.

I was gonna say, couldn't you just program all of the proper answers into the robot?

No. The point is that the robot is indeed running off of AI. it does not have the questions beforehand; it has to be programed with the ability to understand the question (orally no less) and extrapolate the answe based on that.
Like I said...doomed.

yeah, whatever, but the computer still didn't learn all of that trivia itself. someone had to program it with the knowledge, correct?

The computer has an unfair advantage in that it can buzz in faster than any human. Also, the contests see the questions written out their screens, just like we do at home, so Watson is probably able to process the question that way. Give Watson a human shape and and an actual hand that has to hit the buzzer, then I'll be impressed. Also, that wasn't even that bad. Ken was staying competitive with the robot.
Agreed, Ken was staying very competitive, and it definitely doesn't have to understand the question orally as it can just read the screen (faster than a human). However, while the computer can buzz in faster than a human, it still is only provided with the visual queue to buzz in, so I'm not necessarily sure it is being given an unfair advantage in that regard.

Well, the fact that it's allowed to ostensibly send a signal to the buzzer electronically rather than physically press the buzzer like the other two contestants, is unfair.
I'm not a bad enough dude, but I am an edgy little shit. I'll do what I can.

I was thinking the same thing as well as what FNJ was. It has an unfair advantage in reaction times as well as having all of the answers programmed into it somewhere. No human can posess the entire wealth of human knowledge like a computer can.
And yet, Ken was still staying neck and neck with it. I'm more scared of Ken to be honest.

And a lot of those questions, you could see both contestants trying buzz in and being beaten out.
I imagine the computer will always go for a true Daily Double as well, since it has no reason to doubt that it knows the answer, and thus no concept of risk assessment. In a rare situation where it gets confused by syntax, that could be hilarious.
Robotics and AI is intriguing to me but it hasn't hit the point where it's really interesting to me yet. It seems stuck in the same place it was in the 90's.
"We made a robot that can tell you how old wine is in your bottle just by using infared, and it can also walk up and down steps and only fall down 65% of the time."
When they get that giant Gundam in Tokyo Harbor up and running, let me know though.

Forgive my stupidity, but I'm still not understanding this........
How does the computer know the answers if they haven't been programmed into it?

For some reason the news site thinks it's cool to write articles in all caps.
To answer the question about how it finds answers it seems that it scans the context of the uploaded pages of information to formulate responses.
JEOPARDY HOST ALEX TREBEK OVERSAW THE COMPETITION, WITH CATEGORIES LIKE "CHICKS DIG ME" AND "CHILDREN'S BOOKS." WATSON, NAMED AFTER IBM'S FOUNDER, DIDN'T ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS WRONG AND TOOK AWAY MORE THAN 4-THOUSAND DOLLARS.
IBM HAS BEEN WORKING ON WATSON FOR SEVERAL YEARS. THE ROBOT IS MEANT TO "UNDERSTAND" LANGUAGE THE WAY HUMANS DO. THAT MEANS PICKING UP ON IRONY AND SUBTLETIES, SOMETHING THAT ROBOTS HAVE HAD TROUBLE DOING UP UNTIL NOW.
RESEARCHERS LOADED 200 MILLION PAGES OF TEXT INTO WATSON. THIS ALLOWS THE ROBOT TO ANALYZE THE CONTEXT OF WORDS AND SEE HOW THEY RELATE TO EACH OTHER. THE COMPANY SEES HUGE POTENTIAL FOR THE SUPERCOMPUTER THAT GO WAY BEYOND GAME SHOWS.
WATSON COULD HELP DOCTORS DIAGNOSE PATIENTS, WORK AT TOURIST CENTERS OR HANDLE CUSTOMER RELATIONS.
THE REAL JEOPARDY COMPETITION WILL BE ON TV ON FEBRUARY 14TH, 15TH AND 16TH. IBM WILL DONATE ALL OF ITS WINNINGS TO CHARITY.

I bet Watson has a satellite internet connection and cheats via Google.
