I've done that one too. There are several spots in the early mario games that I got stuck in. I have a knack for finding inescapable places in games.

I must try and remember the games that I KNOW I got stuck in as a kid, there were plenty times where I had to turn off the system and curse a lot. SMB 3 wasn't one of them though.

Incidentally, stuff like this is why SMB2J didn't get a US release back in the day. It was filled with annoying tricks and traps.
