Yeah, I know. It's nothing against him, he's a good guy. It's just the idea that our culture has adopted. It's why Doom was turned from a damn fun FPS into a shock-horror crapfest. |
um, the original doom was suppsoed to be scary, and doom 3 was amazing.

I know they were supposed to be scary, but Doom 3 isn't scary like the others. It's more like "OH, SHIT!!!" scary then "JESUS MOTHERFUCKING CHRIST, I JUST SHIT MYSELF!!!" scary. And the mechanics of Doom 1 and 2 are way better.

I actually meant the transition from the awesomeness of Doom and Doom 2 to the mediocrity of Doom 3. I haven't seen the Doom movie. |
Damn, I guess my interest in discussing the movie made me disregard what you meant. It's like that Jim Gaffigan routine about really wanting to talk about a movie you just saw, but no one wants to talk about it because it came out a while ago and it's old news.

and the old DOS ones with the silly handdrawn sprites were JESUS MOTHERFUCKING ECT scary?
please elaborate on how the mechanics in the prior dooms are way better than doom 3 as well.

The physics in Doom 1 and 2 SUCKED. So basically if I blow something up with a rocket the majority of it will slide across the floor of the room in one piece? Unless every floor was coated in teflon or it took place in an ice rink, I'm pretty sure that the developers were either lazy or the technology wasn't there. Either way, that's not very good.
That's not to say Doom 1 or 2 weren't good; they were great. But they were neither "Oops I Crapped My Pants" scary nor were they physically sound.

Come on, that was 1993/94.
...and back to the topic, I'd add Sparkster to the list. And the Wonder Boy series.(kinda)

I guess I just like those games better, and I didn't like Doom 3. Maybe there's not a reason, but I just didn't.

Since this topic has turned more into "Why video games aren't as good any more", I won't feel too bad about typing my two cents in about the updated topic.
Honestly, I believe that if companies felt the urge to create better games instead of churning out one worthless game after another, things wouldn't be the way they are. I believe the lack of creativity stemmed mostly from the introduction of Halo, and the realization that if you design a game and gear it towards drunken frat boys, enough people are going to buy it to warrant other companies churning out cheap rip-offs in an attempt to generate some easy money.
It irritates me when people come into GameStop, ask my honest opinion on something, and then turn around and buy a Madden game. I realize that I don't have the most "popular" tastes when it comes to video games, but when people ask for help finding a good game and then buy a mediocre game with an explanation of "Dude, the graphics are sweeeeeet", or "Well, everyone else plays it" (Both common real examples), I die a little inside.
I don't even know where I'm going with this anymore. All I know is that, opposed to popular belief, John Madden is not god, and Master Chief is not responsible for the birth of the video game industry. If only most video game companies remembered that as well.
I'm going back to playing "The Typing of the Dead".

It's not Halo's fault; the industry has been turning that way for awhile. We live in a era where games have multi-million dollar budgets, sometimes into the tens of millions, so there's not a whole lot of room for innovation. With the money companies are spending to make their games look amazing, they simply aren't willing to risk a flop and try something new. So you get the same thing over and over again. I think we're going to see the video game industry start to mimic the movie industry more and more in terms of progress.
Look at the movie industry these days:
The big studios like Sony, Miramax and Warner Brothers give you dozens of shitty movies built around big name stars or outside licenses and then you get maybe two or three movies from the same studios each year that use the same basic formula, but don't suck, generally because the director and the screenplay are significantly better.
Then you get a whole bunch of independent movies that are fucking amazing.
The video game industry is shifting in the same direction. Most of the truly interesting games we can expect to see in the future aren't going to be developed by the big-time game studios, they're going to come from upstart young third party companies.

Actually, the reason I put Halo as the start was because I felt that many of the games that were made to just get some easy money before Halo usually had some sort of redeeming quality to them.
I just feel that Halo was the first truly mediocre game to hit it big. Maybe I'm just too rough on Halo, but I feel as if the series was nothing more than mediocre.

I agree with you on that point, but there are some people on this board who are anything but casual gamers and who strongly enjoy Halo.

Me being one of those hard core gamers. I don't find anything wrong with Halo, and I really don't have a problem recommending it to customers when they come in. It's a matter of prefrences,
Not everyone can play Swords & Serpents, then play your friends in Madden, then have a Dance Dance, off. I'm an Omni gamer but I'm not gonna hold it against someone if they don't want to play something, I've recommended.
I've lost many friends over the years trying to convince them to just give Zelda a chance. However back to Halo...I believe that that is the only reason XBox is still a functioning system in the market, and if you can honestly say your not gonna give Halo 3 a try, your gaming agenda needs some tweaking.

BULLSHIT!
there were plenty of unremarkable games before halo, and halo is hardly marketed towards drunken frat boys. most FPS games at the time were "run fast, get rocket launcher, get frags, jump around like an idiot, reload rocket launcher." halo took that and did something different. it slowed gameplay down, added vehicles, balanced weapons so that a guy with a rocket launcher was not invincible, addedthe ablilty to use grenades and melee along with regular weapons, and whatnot. it wasn't groundbreaking by any means, but it was something different for the time, and made the game fun. co-op was also something that you didn't see too much of at teh time (at least decent co-op) and the game was story driven, unlike games like quake and soccom (although soccom doesn't really fall into the above mentioned category)
the fact about unremarkable rip off copy games is that it's easy to churn out a quick sequel or a game based on a liscense, or a game that's similar to something else taht was successful, so that people say "oh hey, I loved GTA, I should pick up just cause, it has a parachute!" or "fuck yeah! a new burnout game!" or even "well I loved ghost rider, how bad could the game be?" and buy it. this gives the company money that tehy could use towards making a more remarkable game, or in the rare cases that they make a GOOD game, like criterion studios wit hthe burnout series, cred so that people will say "well I LOVED burnout so lemme check out black, that new game from criterion studios."

surely the X box didn't get any other games worth playing, and surely the 360's X-Box live was a big flop, with the Live Arcade, and the achievement points, and the gamer score cards, and the downloading high def movies and stuff. Nobody wants to play gears of war, or morrowind, or dead rising, or dead or alive.
surely the regualr X-Box didn't get all of the good 2d fighitng games in better shape than the PS2 counterparts, and I'll be damned if it wasn't the only system that could handle doom 3 when it came out, among other games. I suppose custon soundtracks weren't too big of a deal either. playstation gamers LOVE hearing emo and avril lavigne while they crash cars in burnout, and I KNOW thos Wii sports player's don't mind turning down their TV volume and putting on a stereo while they launch their remotes through their television sets.
I'd also like to see Mugen running on a playstation of a gamecube.

I hate to just throw this in out of nowhere, but was Black a decent game? I haven't gotten a chance to play it yet. If you say it's good, I'll have to try it, since it isn't that expensive now.

One of my friends played Black and said that he had a "game-induced orgasm". I guess that either means it's good, or he's a masochist.
