20 minutes long, but a very interesting, humorous, and educational story.

Awesome anecdote.

Wow... he was a nice hacker. If he had published that guy's social security number and all of the other info, that thief's life would have been destroyed.

Not only that. But, was actively watching the guy use his computer. And, he still had full control of it, so he installed a key logger and such so he could collect as much info from the guy as possible. Also, this took place from different states.

When he was ready to contact the police he pretty much gave them the following info:

The guys name.
His birth-date
multiple photos of him
the guy's address
his PCs serial numbers.

It was probably one the easiest cases the police ever had to deal with.

Yea, having those original serial numbers seems like it was very important. Would the police really not be able to return his machine to him without them?

He would have to provide proof of ownership.

Now, in this case he could probably do that, as the system was still installed with all of his settings. Including dated files that would most likely contain his name somewhere.

However, if he did not have the serial numbers, and the thief reformatted the system, then it would be incredibly hard for the owner to prove he owned it. It would be the same as if you went to a pawn shop and tried to convince them that a laptop they had for sales was your stolen one. If you did not have record of the serial numbers and receipts, they would just laugh at you and kick you out of the store.

Anytime you buy any electronics valued at more that $200, save the receipts and copy down your serial numbers and store them in a secure location. (Home Safe, bank deposit box, at a relatives, etc.)

This will help protect you against theft and other forms of loss. Also, regardless if you are a renter or a homeowner, get insurance. (Most homeowners already have this due to mortgages) And, renter's insurance is on average like $15 - $20 a month. Then you are double covered. You can list all your expensive possessions in the policy. So if they are stolen and never recovered, you can still be reimbursed. Also, they are covered and protected in the event of fires and other damages not caused by you.
