A little bit of Serious Business...
A little before 1pm today, a student attending my old high school brought a gun into the building and shot both the school's principal and the assistant principal. Right now they're both still alive, in serious and critical conditions, respectively.
I don't know the principal really but I do know the assistant principal. I met her several times while I was in high school, and she gave a speech at our graduation. She's a great woman, and I am utterly stunned that both her and the principal were shot. Apparently, the motivation behind this was because the assistant principal... suspended the student. That's it. After receiving his suspension, he got a gun, posted an expletive-laden Facebook message, and then drove up to the school to shoot the two people responsible for suspending him. He then took his own life. He was 17.
If you could spare a kind thought or prayer for the shooting victims, I would really appreciate it; and, if you're a particularly forgiving soul, a little thought or prayer for the student as well. Thank you.
Edit: The assistant principal has since died from her injuries. Please spare a thought or prayer for her family, and the principal, who is still alive.

Damn over a suspension? Sorry to hear about this. I hope they recover and have no long term problems from this incident.
It is just unbelievable to me that someone would get that worked up over a vacation from school though.

This has made international news as well.
What i read though was the Principal is stable and the vice principal is in critical condition.
I hope they both make a speedy recovery!

Thank you so much for your guys' thoughts so far.
I just wanted to update that it was reported about a half hour ago that the assistant principal has died from her injuries. Please spare a thought for her family.

I'll keep them in my prayers. There was a gunman opening fire at the mall right next to where I work today, so it's been a pretty crazy day all around.

The kid was 17, if you hate school that much drop out. Reminds me of Columbine, how close were those two to graduating and leaving forever, a few weeks or so? Such a waste all around.

One of those "Oh, this will never happen to me" stories.
Terribly sorry, so glad to hear that both survived and sad to hear that a suspension ended a student's life.

Only good part about this story is that at least there's one less psychopath in the world. Too bad it cost the life of the assistant prinicipal though but I hope she's in a better place.

I think this is the news story:
http://wireupdate.com/wires/13873/assistant-principle-dies-in-omaha-ne-high-school-shooting/
A few major things come to my mind when I read the article.
* Something in this kid's life really bothered him and it sounds like his parents didn't help him out.
* Kids in the future are screwed... this guy's suicide note says "wont" instead of "want", the school really is failing him.
* I hope that this sparks something positive where the school becomes more interested in helping its students and staff mentally cope with difficult situations rather than just beefing up security and making the school more like a prison. I know that Columbine definitely made the school I went to much more like a correctional facility than an educational one, and we were more than 2000 miles away.

It really bothers me when someone ends their own life before they even get out of highschool. Honestly, when I was 16 or 17, I had no idea how much my life would change in just two years. A total waste.

Personally, I think this is the wrong way to look at the situation. He had problems and he clearly needed help dealing with issues, and he didn't get that help. The tragedy here is as much society's fault as it is his.

Incidentally, this is the second teenager we've had go nuts and start shooting people in a public place in the last few years. Does anyone remember the mall shooting that happened back in December of 2007? That was in our town, too.

It's not society's job to look after every single person though. If a child is having issues, it's up to the parents to help him deal with them. If the parents fail, what's society supposed to do about it? I say hold the parents accountable (if your kid shoots up a school then kills himself, you go to prison for being a shitty parent) but that's just me.
Also, the teacher:student ratio in most schools is far too low for teachers to be expected to go out of their way to help troubled kids. When there's literally hundreds of kids for each school official, it's unrealistic to expect them to have the time or energy to keep tabs on every single child's emotional wellbeing. It's just easier to beef up security.
The only way I can really look at it is to be glad that someone who thought it was a good idea to shoot a few innocent people is no longer a part of this world and I can hope his parents will be held accountable. We can also hope other parents will take notice and intervene with their troubled children before it becomes too late for them.
I'm seriously not trying to be a dick, but one has to be realistic about these kinds of situations. It's nice to have a bleeding heart and feel badly that he was just a screwed up kid who didn't get the help he needed from society but sadly, the world isn't that simple. Instead of blaming the teachers and counselors or society for failing him, blame his parents who created him and his problems in the first place. Why are they innocent and allowed to go on with their lives when they indirectly killed someone else?

Panda, you are missing the fact that if we don't deal with these problems before the explode out of control, the victims are usually the innocent.
My wife worked in an inner city school as a social worker in a pilot program where students who were having trouble in school would meet with her. More often than not, it was poor parenting at the source of the issues. While it is easy to point the finger, most of the parents simply didn't understand what they were doing wrong.
My wife helped to bring attention to the situation and on more than one occasion diffused potentially harmful situations.
So, is it worth it to pay money to have someone who can look into this sort of thing? Or do we ignore it and just lay blame and be happy when the kids finally lose their minds?

You want to be realistic, but you think people should be responsible for OTHER people's actions? They should go to prison?
Are you the guy who thinks that a bartender should go to jail for serving alcohol to a guy who later kills people with his car, or in a drunken rage?
You don't have to be a bleeding heart, but some humanity would be nice.

No, I'm not that guy. I just think the people who created and raised a murderer should have some culpability in that. He is their offspring that they molded for 17 years. Loved children from happy homes with great parents don't shoot up schools. Shitty parents should be punished, that's all.
The US is a fucking mess because there are too many unqualified and terrible people having too many kids. They grow up damaged and at best have intimacy issues or drug problems and at worst, shoot up schools or become serial killers.
And yeah, I get what you're saying GP, and it definitely would be nice if every school in the country employed a few social workers to defuse these kinds of powder kegs. Let's hope incidents like this one will affect some change in that regard.
