Title: Titlating Joined: Dec 17 2007 Posts: 5042

I was a webelo and I quit soon after. I rejoined a few years following but quit again. I was a product of Den mothers and we never did anything outdoorsy aside from camping in backyards.

I was a Webelo, and ranked something into Boyscouts.

I had a blast personally when I did it. I loved camping, shooting rifles, catching fish, learning how to build fires, and about animals and plants.

We played Capture the flag around the campgrounds, or manhunt.

I seriously enjoyed my time in scouts, and plan on having my boy (if i have a boy one day) enrolled.

I made it to whatever the third highest rank was. All I remember doing is just sitting around and praying all day in church (that's how we do things in utah), not being mormon (or even christian) I felt extremely awkward the whole time. One day the scoutmaster told us that we need to get our 'duty to god' badge or something like that, where we would have to make a speech in front of church. I just stopped going at that point.

Though I did consider making the most epic, plagiarized speech ever. something like:
Four score and seven years ago, I had a dream, that one day we would ask not what our country could do for us etc...

I was in it through Webelos, and then I quit to play Little League. I was better at Cub/Boy scouts, but then I discovered plant-based ethnogens.

I wanted to join as a kid, but if I recall correctly the uniform was only sold at one place in town and it was ridiculously expensive. Being poor as hell, we couldn't justify the cost so I played tee-ball and some Little League before switching to soccer. I was much better at soccer and never got a black eye from being hit in the face by the ball, unlike baseball. I found better things to do by middle school like video games and quit both those boring sports.

I don't think they're supposed to make you do that, it was optional in my troop. However, the badge itself was fucking sweet, since it was a hanging shield so I had to get it.

Also, one thing I was never clear on, we had both the navy blue and the tan uniforms. Was it just personal choice as to what to wear? I had a tan shirt, but a lot of the people I knew had blue ones, but it was never made clear if it really meant anything. Again, our den mother was an idiot and didn't teach us anything.

From my understanding, the navy one was for Cub Scouts and the tan one for Webelos and above. They also had different kerchiefs, didn't they?

I seem to remember wearing blue in webelos, but besides that I think that you are correct.

I don't think that we wore our hats very much.

Anyone remember those big field guides that they gave out? Those were pretty cool.

Did anyone else have the little boat championship where you had to build the boat just like the pinewood derby and blow it down this track?

If I remember correctly, the grade one Weeblos or whatever wore blue still, but when you made the second grade you got the tan shirt in anticipation of finally becoming a real Boy (Scout.)

Ditto, but I got chicken pox during the big camping trip and then got stuck in the hospital in a croop tent for an asthmatic reaction to the profuse amount of mold in my school instead of going on another big one. That sucked.

I'm with Jeebus and Aeonic. I loved it, and a lot of fun making Ash trays out of sheet metal, learning how to shoot a bow and arrow, shooting my first rifle, and adventuring around.

I remember when we did the rifle shoot, I slipped a .22 rifle round into my pocket because I thought it was cool. I never took it out of my pocket, and it went through the washer and dryer. Not sure if it could have still went off after a round in the washer, but I know my dad beat my ass and said "it could have went off and shot someone" while it was in the dryer.

Yeah, archery, rifle shooting, and shotgun shooting were all fun. I also got my lifeguard certification and master diver certification through scouts (Diving was actually through SSI, but at scout camp). Also, had we played our cards better, I totally would've lost my virginity at scout camp. With a girl, jackasses.

I'll be honest, in cub scouts I liked the campouts. We don't really do them anymore.
Now we go on regular campouts.
Utah has really good camping locations

There are too many mountains in the way to see the sky!

I loved the camping, don't get me wrong, but I don't remember the sky being to striking here. Montana, on the other hand, deserves the nickname "big sky state"

Our Boy Scout meetings were about 30 minutes of merit badge requirements and and hour of dodge ball. I don't recall there being much structure.

Summer camp on the other hand was awesome. We went to Massaweepi(sp?) in the Adirondacks, New York. As soon as we stepped off the bus it was like Lord of the Flies. Our Scout Master's didn't care about anything so long as we didn't kill ourselves. It started to get lame when I was 15 or so, but they were still fun times.

Did anyone ever join Order of the Arrow?

I tried, but my Craft (fletcher) skill wasn't high enough, and I still need the Precise Shot feat.

I was bummed that I never got tapped for Order of the Arrow. And we had something called high adventure camp that you had to be 14+ for which kept things fun. We went the first year when they only had SCUBA and mountain climbing, but they were making other programs as well for the future. The "no running" rule in camp was changed by our SCUBA instructor to "no walking" to keep us active and stuff, so ultimate frisbee became our method of transportation, which was pretty fucking awesome. We could also go into the mess hall anytime we wanted and grab stuff from the fridge which was great, especially cause I'm always thirsty. I had to go to regular camp when I was 15 to get my lifeguard (The week after getting my master diver as well, fun summer) and it definitely would've been a nightmare if I wasn't so busy. There was no one my age and the kids were little shits, but it was also fun hanging out with the adults and learning the ways in which they manipulated the kids which were both entertaining and useful.

...then again, that weak also sucked because I was working 10 hour days on the waterfront and forgot the sunscreen the first day. Got the worst sunburn of my life that day; it was so bad it took me 30 minutes to get in and out of bed.

I was a Wolf Scout, but I quit because I got in a fight with the scoutmaster's son. (I kicked his ass, by the way)
