Vamp is a complete douchebag who's supposed to be this mystic dude who is a bisexual blodsucker, but he comes off as a poor man's Psycho Mantis. He first shows up in MGS2 and he'll piss you off every time he shows up. That's also where they begin talking about the Patriots. There's no need to know who the Patriots are, since that's the million dollar question of the second game. In all honesty, you should finish the first game then beat the second one. Don't worry, the second game can be beaten in less than a day, and is much less enthralling, you basically play the same game as the first, except with shittier villians, a less than interesting protagonist and a storyline so ridiculous, you end up with more questions than answers. You will probably be left with the feeling of anti-climatic rage, and you wonder why you shelled out $300 for a PS2 and this when it first came out....UGH!!!! ....Sorry.You could skip the third game for the most part, but a few characters do show up from there.

You should play the third if you want, since it's technically the beginning of the franchise and a lot more clear on plot and shit compared to MGS2.

Who are the patriots?

A secret cabal that controlled the USA (in MGS universe) , Big Boss, who you play as in MGS3, was the leader of the patriots, and he's also Snake & Liquid's daddy.

You also play as Sean Connery's look alike (Big Boss) in MGS3.

While I do agree that MGS3 is awesome, I don't think it's THAT necessary to continue the story. It probably has the most replayability of the first 3 games, but that's only because you can play through several different ways. I remember the first time, I killed a fuckload of people, so going through The Sorrow's river was a pain in the ass.

I can imagine Hideo Kojima and company sitting in a stupid looking room swapping ideas for Metal Gear.

"So like, uh, now what should happen?"

"I don't know, roll a joint. We'll decide when we're high as balls."

"Ugh, *cough* I know! We could like, make this guy pee himself, it'll totally be for the lulz. LOLZ."

"Yeah, all the people that think we're deep won't really know we're being vague to disguise the fact that we can't write a storyline to save our testes. And we'll take all of their fucking money! Now pass the joint."

Yup, that's MGS in a nutshell.

that's pretty much any game, movie or TV show that tries to incorporate eastern/western philosophies and dated theories. You'd "have" to be vague in with the vast amount of studies and written literature on the subject matters.

I think LSD probably played more of a hand in MGS story development then weed did.

I've read the entire story online, but I've only ever played the GBC game and Twin Snakes, Grey Fox was banf, but I never could figure out his backstory. Then I played the PSP games and I got REALLY confused... given up on the franchise since then.

Hmm...well, at any rate, I'm a huge fan of the series and I just recently beat not only MGS3 but also MG2:SS, so if you have any further questions, ask away!

Every time I play MGS 3, I get stuck on pretty much the very first level. Maybe it's something I'm doing, but every time I approach that first base, I get anally probed and can't go any further.

Also, since you obviously have a PS3, you should download the Metal Gear Database from the PSN. It's free.

It's an interactive and extensive encyclopedia of the entire Metal Gear franchise, very thorough and helpful.

I've heard that Hideo Kojima claimed Peace Walker for the PSP as basically the 5th MGS game.

It's when you try to go into that first base, it's like no matter what I do I get spotted and lit up like James Caan in Godfather.

I've been thinking about playing the MGS games. Do I need to play the original Metal Gears to know what's going on or are they their own separate thing?

I...think. The ninja (codename Grey Fox)'s name is Frank Jaeger, but for all I know they could've changed his name.

Raiden is the protagonist of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty as well as the upcoming MG game.

Just be warned that Raiden is a whiny bitch in MGS2 and was pretty much hated by everyone who played it. In MGS4, they did their best to redeem him, and make him more likable and sympathetic.

Well Jeebus Battlefield Earth sounds better when you put it that way.
